Involvement of Estrogen Receptors in the Anxiolytic-Like Effect of Phytoestrogen Genistein in Rats with 12-Weeks Postovariectomy  [PDF]

Abstract: Phytoestrogens are natural compounds found in some vegetables, and they replicate many of the physiochemical and physiological properties of estrogens, including the regulation of mood. The phytoestrogen genistein exerts anxiolytic-like effects in rats with a chronic absence of ovarian hormones, but the mechanism involved in this effect remains to be explored. The present study explored the participation of estrogen receptor-β in the anxiolytic-like effect of genistein (1.0 mg/kg, i.p., for 4 days) in Wistar rats with 12-weeks postovariectomy, considered as experimental model of post-surgical menopause. In the light/dark test, a useful tool for anxiety study and for the screening of anxiolytic drugs, genistein reduced the latency to enter and increased the time spent in the light compartment and significantly increased the frequency and time spent exploring the light compartment compared with the control group, which is considered as an anxiolytic-like effect at experimental level. All behavioral effects produced by genistein in the light/dark test were blocked by previous tamoxifen administration (5.0 mg/kg, s.c., for 6 days), a non selective antagonist for estrogen receptor-β. The effects produced by genistein or tamoxifen in this test were not related to significant changes in general motor activity evaluated in the open field test. In conclusion, the specific contribution of present investigation was identify that estrogen receptor-β is involved in the anxiolytic-like effect produced by phytoestrogen genistein in rats with a long-term absence of ovarian hormones; supporting the hypothesis that estrogen receptor-β participates in the regulation of anxiety associated with low concentration of ovarian hormones and in the anxiolytic-like effects produced by natural estrogenic compounds such as phytoestrogens.

Abstract: some epiphyte plants are space parasites only. the effect that causes infestation of tillandsia recurvata aggregations on reproductive success of fouquieria splendens was analyzed. the study was carried out in a microphyll-thorny xeric scrub at pe?a blanca, queretaro. in april 2005, sixty six individuals of f. splendens were selected, to register the cover, number of t. recurvata aggregations guests, cover mean of three t. recurvata aggregations by each phorophyte, panicles number, fowers with seeds and dead fowers by panicle. the infestation level of t. recurvata on f. splendens was correlated directly with number of fowers produced by cover phorophyte unit area (r = 0.31, p = 0.014); also, a signifcant positive correlation between infestation level and number of dead fowers was found (r = 0.33, p = 0.007). nevertheless, there was not a signifcant correlation between infestation level and seeds produced by cover unit area of f. splendens (r = 0.05, p = 0.71). results suggest that there is a possible reproductive compensation. when high infestation leve isby t. recurvataexist, f. splendens phorophyte responds by increasing the production fowers in order to assure that the same number of structures with seeds stays in a similar proportion as if it was not infested.

Abstract: La reproducción en los seres humanos, al igual que en otras muchas especies, implica un proceso de selección sexual que incluye la evaluación de factores como la inteligencia, la confiabilidad, la salud, la posibilidad de aportar recursos y las características físicas, entre otras. Sin duda, la decisión de la elección depende de la estrategia reproductiva que cada individuo elija pues diversos estudios sobre selección sexual humana muestran que las personas hacen uso de más de una estrategia reproductiva, lo que explica por qué algunos individuos prefieren tener varias relaciones a corto plazo, otros se deciden por una sola relación a largo plazo y otros más mantienen ambas, es decir, una a largo plazo y varias a corto plazo. Como consecuencia, las características que cada uno podría buscar en sus parejas potenciales resultan ser muy diversas. Sin embargo, existen algunos factores biológicos que subyacen a la toma de decisiones y que son aparentemente universales. En esta revisión presentamos los resultados obtenidos en algunos trabajos, incluyendo los nuestros, con la finalidad de dar a conocer, desde la perspectiva biológica, cuáles características resultan imprescindibles para seleccionar una pareja y porqué. Desde luego, sin perder de vista que para conseguir un mejor entendimiento de la conducta humana es necesario considerar que las adaptaciones psicológicas en los seres humanos, las cuales operan de forma consciente o inconsciente, están encaminadas a resolver los problemas más elementales de sobrevivencia y reproducción.
Early Detection of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) in Isolated Hemocytes of Litopenaeus vannamei  [PDF]

Abstract: To date, White Spot Syndrome (WSS) produced by the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) causes one of the most severe diseases infecting penaeid shrimps worldwide. Although a vast amount of studies has elucidated pathogenesis in live infection models, there is still little information about the interaction of WSSV infections using in vitro models in the whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (L. vannamei) hemocytes. In this study, a WSSV infection kinetics was performed using total hemocytes isolated from healthy L. vannamei organisms and maintained in in vitro conditions using isotonic solution for shrimp (ISS). The infected experimental cells received ≈ 30,000 viral copies of WSSV. The viability of the hemocytes (control and infected group) was measured during the kinetics with trypan blue exclusion method and cells were maintained up to 6 hpi (post-infection) with non-significant differences of viability between both groups. WSSV replication was assessed using RT- PCR at the RNA expression level of the early viral gene Ie1 and transcripts were detected as early as 30 min pi. Hemocytes from WSSV group showed disrupted integrity, degranulation and irregular shape. This study provides evidence of the capability of WSSV to infect and replicates in L. vannamei hemocytes using in vitro assays in short times as 30 min.

Abstract:

The air quality in many cities has been deteriorating and affecting population’s health. Airborne particles can block the defense mechanisms of respiratory system and may lead biological elements such as pollen, bacteria, fungi and viruses into the lungs. This paper presents the study of biologically contaminated air in the city of Hermosillo, analyzing filters containing particulate matter with a diameter equal or less than 10 micrometers (PM10) and Total Suspended Particles (TSP). Three sampling periods were analyzed during 2011. Samples taken from the filters were placed in tubes containing nutritive broth BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) and incubated at 37 °C for 24 hours. The identification of the isolated microorganisms was done by a biochemical test recommended in Bergey’s Manual. Results showed a high bacteria concentration in the presence of microorganisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae sub pneumoniae, Citrobacter, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus penneri, Butiauxellaagrestis, Salmonella paratyphi A and Enterobacter sacazakii. When bacterial concentration was analyzed separately, the lowest number of bacteria was observed during February for the south location and in August for the north location. The highest degree of bacterial air pollution was found in the central area of the city.

Synthesis and Characterization of Chitosan Nanoparticles Loaded Botanical Extracts with Antifungal Activity on Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Alternaria species  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) and chitosan nanoparticles- botanical extracts: EEA-CSNPs (ethanolic blueberry extract added chitosan nano-particles) and EMN-CSNPs (extract methanol of nanche added chitosan nano-particles) were characterized and evaluated in vitro ongrowth of Alternaria alternata isolated from Fig and Rosemary and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides isolated from Papaya and Soursop. From particle size distribution characteriza-tion, the size of nanoparticles increased after EEA incorporation. On the other hand, the smallest value of Z-average particle size was for the EMN-CSNPs. Zeta potential value decreased for CSNPs and EEA-CSNPs. However, when EMN is incorporated to CSNPs, the value is increased. From the results, it can be seen that the most stable suspension was EMN-CSNPs. After incorporation of Byrsonima crassifolia to CSNPs, no changes were observed in characteristic absorption bands for the FTIR spectra. However, after Vaccinium corymbosum incorporation to the CSNPs, changes were seen. For in vitro evaluation, CSNPs without EEA caused the total germination and sporulation inhibition of A. alternata from Rosemary. Incorporation of EMN to CSNPs improved the control of C. gloeosporioides with amycelial growth inhibition of 79% isolated from papaya and 82% isolated from soursop. In both isolated there were total germination inhibition. Overall, a synergistic effect between the chitosan and EMN was observed.
Shock Dynamics In Relativistic Jets

Abstract: We present a formalism of the dynamics of internal shocks in relativistic jets where the source has a time-dependent injection velocity and mass-loss rate. The variation of the injection velocity produces a two-shock wave structure, the working surface, that moves along the jet. This new formalism takes into account the fact that momentum conservation is not valid for relativistic flows where the relativistic mass lost by radiation must be taken into account, in contrast to the classic regime. We find analytic solutions for the working surface velocity and radiated energy for the particular case of a step function variability of the injection parameters. We model two cases: a pulse of fast material and a pulse of slow material (with respect to the mean flow). Applying these models to gamma ray burst light curves, one can determine the ratio of the Lorentz factors gamma_2 / gamma_1 and the ratio of the mass-loss rates dot{m_2} / dot{m_1} of the upstream and downstream flows. As an example, we apply this model to the sources GRB 080413B and GRB 070318 and find the values of these ratios. Assuming a Lorentz factor gamma_1=100, we further estimate jet mass-loss rates between dot{m_1} ~ 10^{-5}-1 Msun.yr^{-1}. We also calculate the fraction of the injected mass lost by radiation. For GRB 070318 this fraction is ~7%. In contrast, for GRB 080413B this fraction is larger than 50%; in this case radiation losses clearly affect the dynamics of the internal shocks.
Presence of Infectious Hypodermal and Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) in Native Shrimps from Southern Mexico  [PDF]

Abstract: A survey for Infectious Hypodermal and Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) was performed during two catching seasons of native shrimps in the Yucatan Coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The mtDNA COI barcode identified two endemic species; the southern pink shrimp Penaeus notialis (Pérez Fantante, 1967) and the northern pink shrimp Penaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1987) (previously described as Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis). The prevalence of IHHNV was of 18.18% in 2016, and of 8.57% in 2017. All organisms tested negative for WSSV. This is the first identification of wild shrimps in the state of Yucatan Mexico by mtDNA COI barcode as well as the first identification of IHHNV in such species. The presence of IHHNV in wild shrimps populations has a potential of persisting in the coast of Yucatan with putative detrimental effect on local fisheries because once established in natural waters and hosts; such pathogens are almost impossible to eradicate.
Efecto del conteo de nódulos en la resistencia al desgaste por abrasión de los hierros dúctiles austemperados

Abstract: Entre los materiales metálicos de mayor demanda, la producción de hierro con grafito nodular, ocupa en la actualidad, uno de los lugares más importantes entre los hierros fundidos de alta resistencia, y con la introducción del tratamiento térmico de austemperado, aplicado a estas fundiciones, se da lugar a una nueva familia de materiales, caracterizados por su alta resistencia mecánica y elevada tenacidad, que mantienen la economía y facilidad de producción de las fundiciones nodulares.Este trabajo, hace una valoración del comportamiento de hierros nodulares, con diferentes conteos de nódulos, a los que les fue aplicado el tratamiento de austemperado, y posteriormente se les sometió a ensayos de desgaste abrasivo. Con los resultados obtenidos, se hace un análisis de la influencia del conteo de nódulos en dichas propiedades, así como también, de la interrelación del conteo de nódulos, con las variables de tratamiento térmico utilizadas en las muestras ensayadas.Between the metallic materials of greater demand, the iron production with nódular graphite occupies at the present time, one of the most important places between fused irons of high resistance, and with the introduction of the austemperado heat treatment of, applied to these smeltings, gives rise to a new family of materials, characterized by its high resistance mechanical and elevated tenacity, that the economy and facility of production of the smeltings maintain nodulares. This work, makes a valuation of the iron behavior nodulares, with different counts from nodules, to which the austemperado was applied treatment to them of, and later it was put under to them tests of abrasive wearing down. Of the obtained results, an analysis takes control of the influence of the count of nodules in these properties, as well as, of the interrelation of the count of nodules, with the used variables of heat treatment in the tried samples.
Escala para medir la calidad de vida en desdentados totales rehabilitados con prótesis completa mucosoportada

Abstract: introduction: the objective of the present article is to evaluate the utility of a specific scale in the measurement of the physical well-being in edentulous patients. this scale has been integrated in a modular generic questionnaire to measure the health-related quality of life (hrql). patient and methods: the scale was applied in combination with "quality of life profile in the chronically ill (plc)" questionnaire. in a longitudinal study, a follow-up of fifty edentulous patients treated with full dentures in the dental clinics of the university of guadalajara, mexico, was performed. hrql was measured three times: upon beginning of the treatment, after eight weeks and after six months. results: the mean reliability of the questionnaire was 0.74 (cronbach). the hrql improved progressively between the first and the third measurement, eventually presenting a higher level of satisfaction with the full dentures prostheses and a better quality of life. conclusions: the loss of teeth has a deep impact on the hrql. a full denture which replaces the missing teeth improves the quality of life of the affected patients substantially. the results demonstrate that the plc questionnaire with the specific scale is of great utility for the evaluation of the hrql in the rehabilitation of these patients.
