Extreme Effects of Season on the Foraging Activities and Colony Productivity of a Stingless Bee (Melipona asilvai Moure, 1971) in Northeast Brazil

Psyche , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/267361
Abstract: This study reports the influence of season on foraging activities and internal colonial parameters of Melipona asilvai in an Atlantic forest area of northeast Brazil. We used video cameras connected to a PC to monitor all departures and returns of foragers and the types of materials they carried. Foraging activities decreased almost 90% from dry to rainy seasons, but temperature and humidity were not the main factors influencing departures. Observed honey storage and an extreme cutback in activities during the rainy period suggest a seasonal diapause in this species. 1. Introduction Foraging activities in social insects are influenced by unpredictable environmental variables in terms of timing and location of food [1]. According to Biesmeijer and de Vries [2], there are two main features which govern foraging activities of bees: (1) internal factors, such as individual memory and threshold response to react to the foraging stimuli, and (2) external factors, such as environmental and colony conditions which determine the level of exposure to stimuli associated with the decision [3–8]. Colonies of honeybees and stingless bees can allocate more foragers to collect nectar and pollen in response to the amount of food in storage and availability of resources in the field [7, 9–12]. Stingless bee colonies consist of several hundred to tens of thousands of individuals, and information exchange among the workers is a key feature to colony foraging efficiency and indirectly to colony growth and reproductive success [13]. The influence of weather on foraging activities has been studied in several eusocial bee species [14–25]. These studies report that weather conditions, light intensity, humidity, food availability, competition, colony state, and physiological conditions of individuals are important factors that influence the foraging activities of Melipona species. In this study we report an extreme effect on foraging activity and colony production in response to environmental variables for colonies of Melipona asilvai. For this purpose, we used a novel observational approach in order to monitor all daily departures and entrances of foraging bees. 2. Material and Methods 2.1. Study Site The experiments were performed at the Campus of Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS), S?o Cristóv?o (10°55′S, 37°03′W, altitude 2?m). The study area is characterized as a subhumid area of Atlantic Rain Forest or “Zona da Mata.” According to Amancio [26], two distinct seasons are found in this region: a rainy season happening from April to August (pluviosity between 1.100?mm and
Foraging patterns in a nocturnal swarm-founding wasp, Apoica flavissima van der Vecht (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)
Nascimento, Fabio S.;Tannure-Nascimento, Ivelize C.;
Neotropical Entomology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2005000200005
Abstract: foraging behaviour has a remarkable significance to colonies of social insects since it is directly related to the supply of food, water, and pulp. social wasps of the genus apoica lepeletier are primarily nocturnal, but studies concerning the general aspects related to this habit are still scarce. this study showed that the rates of foraging flights were higher during the full moon and last quarter moon phases. frequencies of arrival and departure were correlated with time and temperature at night. the results suggest that the moonlight is an important component to general activities in this genus.
A Variational Approach for Numerically Solving the Two-Component Radial Dirac Equation for One-Particle Systems  [PDF]

Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2012.34048
Abstract: In this paper we propose a numerical approach to solve the relativistic Dirac equation suitable for computational calculations of one-electron systems. A variational procedure is carried out similar to the well-known Hylleraas computational method. An application of the method to hydrogen isoelectronic atoms is presented, showing its consistency and high accuracy, relative to the exact analytical eigenvalues.

Abstract: Brazil has introduced a referendum regarding the prohibition of firearm commerce and propaganda arguments have invoked socially and personally driven issues in the promotion of voting in favor of and against firearm control, respectively. Here, we used different techniques to study the brain activity associated with a voter’s perception of the truthfulness of these arguments and their influence on voting decisions. Low-resolution tomography was used to identify the possible different sets of neurons activated in the analysis of the different types of propaganda. Linear correlation was used to calculate the amount information H(ei) provided to different electrodes about how these sets of neurons enroll themselves to carry out this cognitive analysis. The results clearly showed that vote decision was not influenced by arguments that were introduced by propaganda, which was typically driven by specific social or self-interest motives. However, different neural circuits were identified in the analysis of each type of propaganda argument, independently of the declared vote (for or against the control) intention.

Interciencia , 2003,
Abstract: the present paper studied the feeding strategy and patterns of spatial occupation in quebra stream fish assemblage. the samples were taken using traditional methods (fishing-nets and sieves) and complemented with underwater observations through snorkeling. twenty five species belonging to nine families were identified. fifteen species were observed during the underwater observations and nine were registered only by sampling. the diet of fifteen species was determined by the analysis of their stomach contents. five trophic guilds were determined. six microhabitats were defined and the patterns of spatial occupation were determined for each one. in general there was a great overlap both in the diet and spatial occupation. the guild "insectivorous with predominance of terrestrial insects" showed a clear segregation in the pattern of spatial occupation.
