SYRACUSE AS VIETNAM: THE CLASSICAL INTERTEXT OF JOSEPH HELLER’S PICTURE THIS
F.R. Pauw
Akroterion , 2012, DOI: 10.7445/54-0-29
Abstract: This article explores the classical intertext of Joseph Heller’s 1988 novel Picture This and its concern with ancient Greek and modern American wars. First, the challenges which the generic peculiarities of the work pose to its interpretation will be investigated. Next, Heller’s postmodernist narrative devices and their effect will be evaluated. Since Picture This deals in large part with classical Athenian history and philosophy,2 this article will also examine Heller’s use of classical sources, including certain factual and terminological errata. The penultimate section argues that Heller’s critical concern with wars and imperialism in classical Athens relates to his perception of the American involvement in the Vietnam War. Finally, I suggest that while Heller’s novel can be read as a warning against the corruptive power of politics and war, he remains sceptical of mankind’s ability to learn from history.
Anthelmintic resistance of nematodes in communally grazed goats in a semi-arid area of South Africa
F.R. Bakunzi
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association , 2012, DOI: 10.4102/jsava.v74i3.516
Abstract: A survey was conducted on the occurrence of anthelmintic resistance of nematodes in communally grazed goats in a semi-arid area in SouthAfrica. In herds belonging to 10 smallholder goat farmers, the efficacies of fenbendazole, levamisole and rafoxanide were tested by faecal egg count reduction (FECR) tests. Efficacies of 80 % were considered a threshold for anthelmintic resistance. The FECR tests showed that all drugs tested more than 80 % effective in most instances, but there were notable exceptions. In 1 case, rafoxanide was only 31 % effective and in another case fenbendazole was only 47 % effective. The occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in this farming sector is of concern. Steps should be taken to prevent its further spread and to avoid the development of a situation as onnumerous commercial sheep farms in South Africa where resistance is very common.
Efficacy of 3 anthelmintics in communally grazed sheep as reflected by faecal egg count reduction tests in a semi-arid area of South Africa : short communication
F.R. Bakunzi
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association , 2012, DOI: 10.4102/jsava.v79i1.243
Abstract: A survey was conducted on the occurrence of anthelmintic resistance of nematodes in communally grazed sheep in a semi-arid area near Mafikeng, South Africa, from January to March 2006. In the herds belonging to twelve smallholder sheep farmers, the efficacies of albendazole, levamisole and closantel were tested by faecal egg count reduction tests where 80 % efficacy was considered the cut off for anthelmintic resistance. The results of the faecal egg count reduction tests showed more than 80 % efficacy with all the drugs used in most cases, but there were notable exceptions. In 1 case, closantel had an efficacy of 72 %, albendazole had an efficacy of 68 % and levamisole showed efficacies of 58 %, 60 % and 75 % respectively on 4 farms. The occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in this farming sector is of concern and steps should be taken to prevent its further spread and development to avoid a situation developing as on numerous commercial sheep farms in South Africa where resistance is common.

Een blauwdruk van blauwdrukken
F.R. Ankersmit
BMGN : Low Countries Historical Review , 2002,
Abstract: 1800 F. R. Ankersmit In this essay I express my greatest admiration for Mijnhardt's and Kloek's Blauwdrukken. Not only does the book discuss with an unparalleled richness of historical detail a period in Dutch history that was often dismissed as not being worthy of our interest, but it also proposes a most original and fruitful approach to the major problems of Dutch culture at the end of the eighteenth century. Nevertheless, the authors of this marvelous book could be criticized for not having been sufficiently aware of what one might call 'the cognitive dissonance' between late eighteenth century Dutch culture, on the one hand, and what happened in the world of culture at the same time in England, Germany and France, on the other. A tentative suggestion is made for how a greater awareness of this cultural gap might have altered the picture presented in this impressive and most valuable study.
