Multiple isolates from Aids patients: aspects of an analysis by a genotypic marker and antimicrobial susceptibilities variations
Saad Maria Helena Féres,Telles Maria Alice,Porfirio Fátima,Ferrazoli Lucilaine
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2000,
Abstract: Twenty-one Mycobacterium avium multisolates, from ten human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, were typed by restriction fragment length polymorphism using as marker the IS1245 and characterized by minimum inhibitory concentration for nine different antibiotics. Two out of four patients harboring multisolates with different fingerprint profile, were therefore considered as having a polyclonal infection, since their isolates were taken from sterile site. This result confirms that polyclonal infection caused by M. avium occurs with a nonnegligenciable frequency. Analyzing the multisolates susceptibility profile of each patient it was observed that most of them were infected with strains having appreciably different antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, no matter what the genotypic pattern of the strains was. These results have strong implication for the treatment of the patients.

Abstract: cerebrospinal fluid (csf) samples from 2083 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (aids) and neurological complications were bacteriologically examined during a period of 7 years (1984-1990). the percentage of patients who had at least one bacterial agent cultured from the csf was 6.2%. mycobacterium tuberculosis was the most frequently isolated agent (4.3%), followed by mycobacterium avium complex or mac (0.7%), pseudomonas spp (0.5%), enterobacter spp (0.4%), and staphylococcus aureus (0.3%). among 130 culture positive patients, 89 (68.5%) had m. tuberculosis and 15 (11.6%) had mac. the frequency of bacterial isolations increased from 1988 (5.2%) to 1990 (7.2%), partly due to the increase in mac isolations. bacterial agents were more frequently isolated from patients in the age group 21-30 years and from women (p<0.05).
Superabsorbent polymer for water management in forestry  [PDF]
Miguel Casquilho, Abel Rodrigues, Fátima Rosa
Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/as.2013.45B011
Abstract:

The effectiveness of a superabsorbent polymer of sodium polyacrylate was studied, with emphasis on water management, i.e., absorption, retention and desorption in the soil. The polymer was applied in plots with a sandy soil near Grandola (southern Portugal). Characterization of the most relevant physical and chemical properties of the polymer was made, namely, its specific gravity, particle diameter, capacity of water absorption and desorption. In the plots with and without the polymer, soil moisture was continuously monitored, and grassland biomass samples were collected and weighed. The results reflected the effective role of the polymer both in the improvement of the water regime in the soil and in the substantial increment of grassland productivity.

Novas institui??es e processos educativos: a educa??o e o modo de regula??o em gesta??o. Um estudo de caso em Portugal
Antunes, Fátima;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302004000200009
Abstract: these last decades, in the field of education (and of social policies in general), some changes resulted both in a redefinition of the educational (and welfare) services and of the role of the governance of the state and in the emergence of new configurations for the participation of education in the social regulation. a case study on the vocational school subsystem created in 1989 in portugal allows us to identify some of these recent alterations and to propose some interpretations about their meaning. the analysis of the launching of such a schooling modality and of some of the orientations and practices developed in two vocational schools suggests that this innovation testifies the experimentation of new educational institutions and processes related with the formation of a new regulation mode - distinct from that defined as fordist in which the development of the welfare state model(s) occurred.
Facetas da democratiza??o: uma escola exigente
Antunes, Fátima;
Educa??o em Revista , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-46982009000200004
Abstract: this study, developed in a portuguese school, identifies several guidelines, practices and experiences in which performance and diversity seem to be polarizing topics of the meanings of teachers and students' testimonies. trying to interpret the reported processes, it is suggested that the edification of an exigent school? according to the referents underscored by the actors of the case under study ? seems to represent a negotiation in presence and an answer found by that school, taking into account the capacity of performance required and the conditions of diversity of the public attended by the school, in face of the scholar institution democratization, as it has occurred in that context. on the dimensions approached, that identity construction (an exigent school) testifies some particular angles of current facets of the portuguese democratization of the scholar institution processes lived during the last thirty years.

Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362012000200006
Abstract: this article analyses questions related to the constitutionality of racial quotas in brazil, showing various divergent positions about this topic. it deals with the origin of affirmative actions in the united states, in france and also the limitations to apply these experiences into the brazilian reality. it also presents some brief remarks on the trial of the constitutionality of quotas held by ministers of the brazilian supreme court and the main challenges that must be faced by universities.
Qualidade da educa??o fundamental: integrando desempenho e fluxo escolar
Alves, Fátima;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362007000400005
Abstract: this paper deals with the issue of the quality of the brazilian primary education, considering jointly the students performances along the time and the change in the social profile of students who reached the 4th grade of primary education. the analysis involved the development of an approach to compose the performance distribution of successive generations of 10 years old children based on available information of student samples of saeb 4th grade (national assessment of primary education system) and of students of other grades of state level evaluations. the results emphasize that about half of the observed decrease in average achievement of 4th grade students are due to the change of the social composition of students who reached 4th grade within 1995-2003.
