Superabsorbent polymer for water management in forestry  [PDF]

Abstract:

The effectiveness of a superabsorbent polymer of sodium polyacrylate was studied, with emphasis on water management, i.e., absorption, retention and desorption in the soil. The polymer was applied in plots with a sandy soil near Grandola (southern Portugal). Characterization of the most relevant physical and chemical properties of the polymer was made, namely, its specific gravity, particle diameter, capacity of water absorption and desorption. In the plots with and without the polymer, soil moisture was continuously monitored, and grassland biomass samples were collected and weighed. The results reflected the effective role of the polymer both in the improvement of the water regime in the soil and in the substantial increment of grassland productivity.

Abstract: these last decades, in the field of education (and of social policies in general), some changes resulted both in a redefinition of the educational (and welfare) services and of the role of the governance of the state and in the emergence of new configurations for the participation of education in the social regulation. a case study on the vocational school subsystem created in 1989 in portugal allows us to identify some of these recent alterations and to propose some interpretations about their meaning. the analysis of the launching of such a schooling modality and of some of the orientations and practices developed in two vocational schools suggests that this innovation testifies the experimentation of new educational institutions and processes related with the formation of a new regulation mode - distinct from that defined as fordist in which the development of the welfare state model(s) occurred.

Abstract: this study, developed in a portuguese school, identifies several guidelines, practices and experiences in which performance and diversity seem to be polarizing topics of the meanings of teachers and students' testimonies. trying to interpret the reported processes, it is suggested that the edification of an exigent school? according to the referents underscored by the actors of the case under study ? seems to represent a negotiation in presence and an answer found by that school, taking into account the capacity of performance required and the conditions of diversity of the public attended by the school, in face of the scholar institution democratization, as it has occurred in that context. on the dimensions approached, that identity construction (an exigent school) testifies some particular angles of current facets of the portuguese democratization of the scholar institution processes lived during the last thirty years.

Abstract: this paper deals with the issue of the quality of the brazilian primary education, considering jointly the students performances along the time and the change in the social profile of students who reached the 4th grade of primary education. the analysis involved the development of an approach to compose the performance distribution of successive generations of 10 years old children based on available information of student samples of saeb 4th grade (national assessment of primary education system) and of students of other grades of state level evaluations. the results emphasize that about half of the observed decrease in average achievement of 4th grade students are due to the change of the social composition of students who reached 4th grade within 1995-2003.

Abstract: this article deals with mixed ancestry, the condition of afro-descent and the official classification of races in brazil, and includes brief considerations on the concepts of race and ethnicity, on racial/ethnic identification, and on sex/gender- and race/ethnicity-specific affirmative action policies. according to convention adopted by the brazilian institute of geography and statistics (ibge), a black person in brazil is anyone who claims to be black or brown, inasmuch as the black population is deemed as the sum total of all blacks and mulattos. in political terms, a black person is anyone of african descent who identifies him/herself as such.

Abstract: this study aims to contribute to the analyses of consumption, and food consumption in particular, as a political act, by emphasizing the process of self-attribution of responsibility by consumers involved in organic food consumption at an organic certified street market in rio de janeiro, brazil. conducted from the perspective of sociological and anthropological consumption theories, in addition to risk sociology and the theory of reflexive modernization, this study concluded that these consumers act and participate socially through ?responsible consumption? instead of the collective forms of political participation through institutionalized social movements. even though there is a diversity of values and practices, these consumers seem to have in common (1) a mistrust in other social agents and (2) the trust in the importance and effectiveness of their actions.

Abstract: this paper studies two convergent yet contrasting temporalities in “el sue?o de rapi?a” by carlos reyles. the first one, related to sensuality and hedonism, seeks a return to an ontological past in order to recover an existing unity between man and nature. the second one is based on the correspondence between a capitalist economy and time, which promoted an excessive faith in the future. the analysis also examines reyles’ harsh criticism to a materialism originated by modern economic models with the resulting nostalgia of a lost humanism.

Abstract: the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of constitutional amendment 29 (ec n.29), of 2000, on the decisions of state governors related to the allocation of funds for the health sector, aiming at identifying its conditioning factors. the results of the adjusted model showed that the variable amendment indicating the passing of ec n. 29 was highly significant, confirming that its passing induced governors to raise the revenue percentage invested in the health sector. among context-related variables, just the net per capita revenue and the ideological profile of the governor′s party were significant. however, the overall results allow to state that such variables only marginally condition the substantial effect of the amendment on the states. what can be concluded is that the introduction of a rule such as ec n. 29 was capable of inducing governors to adopt behaviors despite the context-related variables considered herein.
