Abstract: through the wiki moodle, we developed distance education activities in the physics course at ufsm, aiming at producing a hypermedia school subject related to the discipline physics 2 structuring teaching theme: heat, environment and uses of energy (coming from the pcn+), placing the problematic dialogue in the transversal theme "environment". we designed this activity, described as a collaborative production of hypermedia for scientific-technological dissemination, over the period of school discipline didactic i from the physics course. the working group mediated by the wiki moodle has been implemented through the pea (planning, execution, and assessment). the results are positive on the use of technology mediation concerning problematic dialogue and empowerment, in this type of collaborative and distance education.
Educa??o em física: discutindo ciência, tecnologia e sociedade
Angotti, José André Perez;Bastos, Fábio da Purifica??o de;Mion, Rejane Aurora;
Ciência & Educa??o (Bauru) , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-73132001000200004
Abstract: we have analyzed a processual proposal which has been built through investigations and actions in the formal physics teaching which seeks the changing of technological equipment "turned into" reflective, inquiring and conscious generating equipment. the process is committed with both thematic dimensions of teaching/learning and science, technology and society approach. the strategy is based in the constuction of a investigation-action program. the results show improvement of teachers knowledge in this progressive direction, on the decoding of equipments or on the significant learning of physics universals linked to the traditional or contemporary technological products, usually known by the future teachers and their high school learners students. we emphasized the split between technology, too accessible to non-reflective citizens, and the not accessible scientific knowledge. this is justified due to the unfolding of the greek traditional disjunction between techné and episteme and, more recently, by the results of applied sinence as conviction: the imperative improvement of life quality for the progress of the technology sets beyond any questioning. it time to face this split in the physics/natural science teaching and search the links for learning improvement, considering the strong effective interest when studentes deal with the technological "objects".

Abstract: the distribution and magnitude of vitamin a deficiency and dietary consumption of 161 children at 6 to 72 months of age in rural zones in cansan??o-bahia-brazil were evaluated. the serum retinol levels were measured by the spectrophotometric method (bassey-lowry modified by araújo and flores). the serum retinol average was found to be distributed homogeneously throughout the different age groups. inadequate serum retinol levels (<20,0 μg/dl) were detected in 44.7% of the children, which characterized the deficiency as constituting a public health problem. the serum retinol levels showed no statistically significant association as between the sex and age of the children; however the chilfren of less than 24 months showed a higher prevalence of inadequate serum retinol levels. the main available source of vitamin a for these children was represented by carotenoids, especially beta-carotene. foods regarded as being rich in vitamin a were consumed by all age groups. the greatest diversification of consumption of foordstuffs with moderate and low vitamin a content was observed in the group of children of from 24 to 72 months of age, through this was no guarantee of adequate serum retinol levels in this group however.
Effects of an Anatoxin-a(s)-Producing Strain of Anabaena spiroides (Cyanobacteria) on the Survivorship and Somatic Growth of Two Daphnia similis Clones  [PDF]

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2013.46A002
Abstract:

The toxicity of an anatoxin-a(s) producer strain of Anabaena spiroides (ITEP-024) was estimated through sub-chronic bioassays with two clones of Daphnia similis (Labtox and Itajubá), both with intact cells and aqueous extracts of lyophilized material. Animals were grown as clonal cultures in the lab with mineral water plus 20% lake water. The concentrations used in the bioassays were 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.50 and 1.00 mg·L-1 for intact cell cultures and 10, 25, 50 and 100 mg·L-1 for aqueous extracts. Controls with nutritive food were used. The bioassays lasted 72 hours for the aqueous extracts and 96 hours for the intact cell cultures, with measurements of survivorship every day and body length at the beginning and at the end of the bioassays. Both kinds of samples affected survivorship and growth rate of both Daphnia clones, with the intact cell samples being more effective than aqueous extracts. Regarding survivorship, the clone Itajubá was more sensitive to aqueous extracts than the clone Labtox (LC50 = 54.4 and 83.1 mg·L-1, respectively). No significant difference was found between clones in the intact cell bioassays. Regarding growth rates, a significant difference was found between clones in both samples. However, growth rate was significantly decreased in much lower concentrations of intact cells than in aqueous extracts of cyanobacteria. A stimulus of growth was found in the lower concentration (10 mg·L

Neuroscience & Medicine (NM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/nm.2016.71002
Abstract: Background: Salivatory seizures are a singularly rare condition, which can occur both in idiopathic and symptomatic epilepsies. Objectives: To describe and discuss the case of an adolescent patient with sleep-triggered “pure” salivatory seizures associated with a subtle cortical malformation of the right parietal cortex. Case report: Herein, we report a 17-year-old female who started to present salivatory paroxysms, which occasionally secondarily generalized, shortly after falling asleep, at the age of eight years. Video-electroencephalographic monitoring with scalp electrodes failed to show any epileptiform activity during the several recorded clinical events. Brain MRI and curvilinear reconstruction revealed, in the three orthogonal planes, a subtle cortical thickening, limited to a single gyrus in the right parietal cortex, suggestive of a focal cortical malformation. After antiepileptic drug therapy was optimized, the patient became seizure-free. Conclusion: An epilepsy diagnosis should be pursued in patients presenting isolated, paroxysmal hypersalivation, despite possible negative scalp EEG studies.

Abstract: The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of different water stress levels on the development of both rice and barnyardgrass. The study was established into greenhouse, in completely randomized design, in factorial scheme 2 × 5, with four replications. Factor “A” comprised the plant species (rice cv. BRS Querência, or the weed Echinochloa crusgalli), and factor “B” comprised the water stress levels: (T1) continuous flood (CF); (T2) 0 kPa (saturated soil); (T3) 10 kPa; (T4) 40 kPa; and (T5) 100 kPa. Plant emergence was assessed every day; plant length was measured 30 days after planting. At the end of the experiment, the number of leaves per plant, root length and shoot and root dry mass were determined. Our data supply evidence that under moderate water stress, up to approximately 40 kPa, rice tends to perform better than barnyardgrass in the initial stage of crop growth, when under equivalent plant density. However, barnyardgrass is usually present in much higher plant density than crop plants in fields traditionally cropped with rice. Thus, efficient control of barnyardgrass should be accomplished to avoid damage to rice crop by competition for environmental resources.
