A taxonomic review of the Dark-winged Trumpeter Psophia viridis (Aves: Gruiformes: Psophiidae)
Oppenheimer, Marina;Silveira, Luís Fábio;
Papéis Avulsos de Zoologia (S?o Paulo) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0031-10492009004100001
Abstract: the dark-winged trumpeter, psophia viridis (gruiformes, psophiidae) is a brazilian endemic species and includes three subspecies: psophia viridis viridis spix, 1825; psophia v. dextralis conover, 1934, and psophia v. obscura pelzeln, 1857, as well as p. v. interjecta griscom & greenway, 1937, whose validity has been questioned by several authors. these taxa are allopatric in distribution along the south of the amazon river, although the precise limits of their distribution still remain unknown. this complex has never been taxonomically reviewed and this work aims to test the validity of its taxa based on the phylogenetic species concept. morphometrical characters and plumage colour patterns were analyzed, and the distribution of the taxa was also revised. in this study, 108 specimens from 41 localities were examined (all types included), with each reliable literature-based locality being included in order to delimit the geographical distribution of the complex. morphometrical data did not point out significant differences between the taxa, also showing no sexual dimorphism among them. meanwhile, plumage characters showed consistent and distinct patterns for each of the taxa, except for p. v. interjecta, whose features indicated by authors as diagnosable are the result of individual variation. no clinal variation or intergradation were observed, even at regions close to the rivers headwaters, where supposedly populations could be in contact. it is suggested that the currently accepted subspecies be elevated to the species level, such as: psophia viridis spix, 1825, distributed in the madeira-tapajós interfluvium, p. dextralis, found in the tapajós-tocantins interfluvium, and p. obscura, which occurs from the right bank of the tocantins river to the west of the state of maranh?o.
Geographical and seasonal distributions of the seedeaters Sporophila bouvreuil and Sporophila pileata (aves: Emberizidae)
Machado, érika;Silveira, Luís Fábio;
Papéis Avulsos de Zoologia (S?o Paulo) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0031-10492010003200001
Abstract: many species in the genus sporophila are migratory. migration patterns, while poorly studied, may be influenced by seed production which can be very seasonal in some regions. the distribution of s. bouvreuil extends from the amazon and suriname south through a large part of the open regions of brazil. sporophila pileata, on the other hand, is found in southeastern and southern brazil as well as argentina and paraguay. both of these species migrate, but their movement patterns are poorly known. to better understand the geographical and the seasonal distributions of s. bouvreuil and s. pileata, we grouped the records into two categories: the breeding season (september to march) and the putative migration season (april to august). we found two areas of sympatry between s. bouvreuil and s. pileata in the brazilian states of minas gerais and s?o paulo. for s. bouvreuil we suggest that populations that breed in the amazon migrate to the cerrado or caatinga, where they will encounter resident populations of the same species. these resident populations may take part in short distance migrations. sporophila pileata, on the other hand, occur in the cerrado and open areas within the atlantic forest and it is not yet possible to determine migratory tendencies or destinations in the non-breeding season.

Bases neurofisiológicas da dependência do tabaco
Planeta, Cleopatra S.;Cruz, Fábio C.;
Revista de Psiquiatria Clínica , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-60832005000500002
Abstract: it is generally accepted that nicotine is the major component in tobacco smoke responsible for addiction. several studies have demonstrated that the neural mechanisms underlying nicotine addiction have much in common with those underlying the mechanisms of addiction to other drugs. thus, it has been shown that nicotine induces conditioning place preference and self-administration across many species. repeated treatment with nicotine also induces behavioral sensitization in rodents. these behavioral effects of nicotine seem to mediate through the meso limbic dopamine system. smoke cessation results in an abstinence syndrome that seems to be mediated by both peripheral and central nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. in addition, other neurotransmitters systems are involved in the mediation of nicotine addiction and withdrawal. the review of the literature evidences the complexity of the behavioral, neurochemical and molecular effects of nicotine. the integration of nicotine studies across all levels will lead to a better understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the addictive actions of nicotine. the understanding of such mechanisms is crucial to the development of pharmacological agents for the treatment of tobacco addiction and withdrawal.

Abstract: post-graduate education has evolved in a very accentuated way on the basis of the premise that brings about practical consequences in terms of benefits to participants and companies. demand has paramountly been concentrated in master of business administration programs, a north-american creation from the beginning of the last century that has practically expanded all over the world.the impact of these courses has been studied in the professional and academic spheres. dealing with salary evolution before and after the mba, the achievement of new career levels and even the acquisition and attitude towards competencies, studies try to detect the factors that determine the success of mba-graduates. this research examines the population of a brazilian program implanted in 1994, in which 17 classes have already graduated. by means of a questionnaire, we examined the course impact as perceived by the graduates and their post-mba career evolution. this information was crossed with student profile and academic performance, in order to determine the factors that affect the students' success after the course. for this purpose, the research used descriptive statistics and contingency table analysis. finally, we present some preliminary conclusions and questions for further research.

Bird species diversity in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil is not explained by the Mid-domain Effect
Vagner Cavarzere,Luís Fábio Silveira
Zoologia (Curitiba) , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/s1984-46702012000400001
Abstract: The Atlantic Forest is an excellent case study for the elevational diversity of birds, and some inventories along elevational gradients have been carried out in Brazil. Since none of these studies explain the patterns of species richness with elevation, we herein review all Brazilian studies on bird elevational diversity, and test a geometric constraint null model that predicts a unimodal species-altitude curve, the Mid-domain Effect (MDE). We searched for bird inventories in the literature and also analysed our own survey data using limited-radius point counts along an 800 m elevational gradient in the state of S o Paulo, Brazil. We found 10 investigations of elevational diversity of Atlantic Forest birds and identified five different elevational patterns: monotonic decreasing diversity, constant at low elevations, constant at low elevations but increasing towards the middle, and two undescribed patterns for Atlantic Forest birds, trough-shaped and increasing diversity. The average MDE fit was low (r2 = 0.31) and none of the MDE predictions were robust across all gradients. Those studies with good MDE model fits had obvious sampling bias. Although it has been proposed that the MDE may be positively associated with the elevational diversity of birds, it does not fit the Brazilian Atlantic Forest bird elevational diversity.

Na sequência s o apresentados elementos que, com base na análise de documentos publicados e de documentos inéditos, levam à considera o aspectos da obra e do fazer poético do autor ainda n o ponderados publicamente pela crítica especializada. The present article gets organized around two main axles. The first one briefly presents a discussion of aspects related to the study of epistolary documents as research source and discusses some issues of the correspondence exchanged between Jo o Guimar es Rosa and his German translator Curt Meyer-Clason. In the sequence, elements are presented that, on basis of an analysis of published and unpublished letters, lead one to the consideration of work points and author’s poi sis aspects not yet openly considered by the specialized criticism on him.
Space-time evolution of the \lap model: classical and quantum aspects
Fábio L. Braghin,Fernando S. Navarra
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1016/S0370-2693(01)00543-3
Abstract: A time dependent variational approach is used to derive the equations of motion for the \lambda \phi^4 model. The simultaneous evolution of the quantum fluctuations and of the classical part of the field is considered in a lattice of 1+1 dimensions. Different initial conditions corresponding to non equilibrium situations are considered and evolved in time. Such high energy localized configurations expand in the lattice by ``bumps'' which may change with time. The quantum fluctuations make the peaks be smoother and the expansion faster.

Abstract: Canine mammary tumors (CMT) are very common in female dogs, representing approximately 50% of all tumors in this species, but are highly uncommon in male dogs and are primarily related to hyperestrogenism. There is considerable scientific interest in the possible role of environmental contaminants in the etiology of mammary tumors, specifically in relation to synthetic chemical substances released into the environment to which living beings are either directly or indirectly exposed. In this study, the presence of pyrethroid insecticide was observed in adipose tissue adjacent to canine mammary tumors. High Precision Liquid Chromatography—HPLC was adapted to detect and identify environmental contaminants in adipose tissue adjacent to malignant mammary tumor in one male dog, Akita, 12 years old. After surgery, the mass was carefully examined for malignant neoplastic lesions. Five grams of adipose tissue adjacent to the tumor was collected to detect environmental contaminants. The pyrethroid was identified as tetramethrin, at 0.20 μg/g. This is the first report in which the environmental contaminant level was detectable in adipose tissue of this male dog with a malignant mammary tumor, by HPLC. Results suggest the possible involvement of pyrethroid in the canine mammary tumor carcinogenesis since this animal did not present any other tumor that could cause hyperestrogenism.
