Abstract: objective: typical antipsychotic drugs, mainly phenothiazines, have been associated with cataract formation for over forty years. recently, there has been a concern about atypical antipsychotic drugs' potential for inducing this lenticular pathology. accordingly, we sought to determine the cataract rate and other ocular side effects in patients on long-term therapy with antipsychotic drugs. method: eighty outpatients with dsm-iv diagnosis of schizophrenia from two settings who met pre determined inclusion criteria were submitted to an ophthalmological evaluation for ocular abnormalities with emphasis in the lens and cornea. they were divided into two groups: group 1 (n = 52) comprised patients who had been predominantly on typical antipsychotics for at least two years and group 2 (n = 28) patients who had been predominantly on atypical antipsychotics for at least two years. results: cataract was found in 26 patients (33%) with predominance of anterior capsular cataract. the cataract rate among patients from group 1 (40%) was higher than among those from group 2 (18%). visual acuity was reduced in 21 patients (26%). no changes were observed neither in the cornea nor in the retina. conclusions: patients using antipsychotic drugs should be submitted to a periodic ophthalmological evaluation.

Abstract: the antidepressant treatment should be accomplished considering the patient?s biological, psychological and social aspects. in average, there are no significant differences in terms of efficacy among the different antidepressants but the profile in terms of collateral effects, price, suicide risk, tolerability shows great variation which implies in differences in the effectiveness of drugs for each patient. the therapy, therefore, should be individualized. the prophylactic prescription of antidepressants will depend on the intensity and frequency of the depressive episodes. the suicide risk should always be evaluated and if necessary ect should be prescribed. there is no ideal antidepressant, however, there is a large variety of drugs acting through different mechanisms of action which allows the possibility of therapeutic success in resistant depressions.

Abstract: aiming the identification of citrus varieties better adapted to coastal table lands, considering their potential use as rootstocks, the performance of different genotypes for drought tolerance was evaluated, considering their physiological indices related to the growth analyses. the study was carried out in a greenhouse condition of the embrapa cassava & tropical fruits. six genotypes were studied: rangpur lime, volkamer lemon, sour orange, and the hybrids htr - 051, tsk ? cttr - 002 and tsk ? cttr - 017, all from the citrus breeding program of the embrapa cassava & tropical fruits. seedlings were grown in plantmaxa growing media, irrigated adequately until they showed two pairs of true leaves. afterward, they were transplanted to containers with the same growing media, but chemically fertilized. seedlings were irrigated until sampling began. the experimental design was completely randomized under a 6 ? 7 factorial, corresponding to six genotypes and seven evaluation sampling dates. the evaluations were carried out for seedlings under irrigation, water deficit, and re-watering. it was evaluated dry matter accumulation (dm), for their different fractions (root and above ground), and leaf area (la) as the bases for the determination of the physiological indices: leaf area ratio (lar), net assimilation rate (nar) and relative growth ratio (rgr). it could be concluded that the hybrid htr - 051 presented less sensibility to the water deficit, suggesting that it could be indicated as a promissory citrus rootstock for water deficit conditions.

Abstract: introduction: borderline personality disorder (bpd) is a psychiatric syndrome that causes significant morbidity and mortality to both inpatients and outpatients treated by mental health care providers. due to its relatively high prevalence in the psychiatric population, efforts are necessary to treat this problematic group of patients properly. objective: the aim of this paper is to review current evidence of the effectiveness of the various pharmacological approaches employed as part of the treatment plan designed for individuals coping with this illness. methods: for this purpose, the medline database was searched for clinical trials from 1986 to 2003. "borderline personality disorder" and "clinical trials" were used as descriptors. results: numerous works were retrieved, but very few controlled trials were available. noteworthy is the fact that virtually all classes of psychopharmacological agents were tested in this set of patients, often with modest and variable outcomes. due to methodological limitations observed in the vast majority of trials involving specific drugs in this group of patients, it was difficult to estimate the real benefit of the several agents tested. the most robust evidence exists for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics and divalproex. discussion: clearly, more well-designed clinical trials are needed, but the data reviewed suggest that drugs are effective in the treatment of target symptoms in these patients. psychotropics are useful when used in association with the psychotherapeutic approaches usually employed with borderline patients.
