Heavy Metal Contaminated Food Crops Irrigated with Wastewater in Peri Urban Areas, Zambia  [PDF]
Evaristo Mwaba Kapungwe
Open Journal of Metal (OJMetal) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojmetal.2013.32a1010
Abstract: Studies on peri urban farming in Zambia have not adequately tackled the issues pertaining to heavy metal contaminated wastewater irrigation farming. The study investigated heavy metal contamination of water, soils and crops at two peri urban areas in Zambia. Two study sites were New Farm Extension in Mufulira Town in the Copperbelt Province and Chilumba Gardens in Kafue Town in Lusaka Province. The heavy metals investigated were lead, copper, cobalt, nickel and chromium. These heavy metals were found to be higher than acceptable limits in wastewater used to irrigate crops and there are potential human health risks associated with consumption of heavy metal contaminated food crops which have implications on the livelihoods of people. Samples of water, soil and crops were collected and analysed for lead (Pb), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) using the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). The data on heavy metals was analysed using mean, standard error and T-test. The results indicated that the levels of heavy metals in wastewater, soil and food crops were above acceptable limits at two study sites. It can be concluded that there was heavy metal contamination of wastewater, soil and food crops at the two peri-urban areas in Zambia. The study highlighted the actual levels of heavy metal contaminant uptake in food crops consumed by the peri urban population. The information from this study can be used by the relevant authorities to develop appropriate measures for monitoring and control of heavy metal contamination in wastewater irrigation farming systems in peri urban areas inZambia.

Estudos Avan?ados , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142004000300022
Abstract: there will only be resistance to violent action when human awareness is awakened. that is why the author appeals to authentic religions, hoping they may create the conditions for world peace - not only through prayers, but above all by establishing a climate of world peace. so far, in this new phase of facing an increasingly agonizing problem, little has been required from the world of religions and still less from young people's initiatives. in brief, the author's proposal is for the university of s?o paulo to create the conditions to prepare young people for their future responsibility in favor of peace. this should begin as soon as, and persevere as much as possible. a world ethics would certainly be welcome at this time.

Ines Evaristo
Evaluating earthquake disaster risk management in schools in Rungwe Volcanic Province in Tanzania
Evaristo Haulle
Jàmbá : Journal of Disaster Risk Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.4102/jamba.v4i1.44
Abstract: This article establishes existing knowledge on earthquakes and coping mechanisms employed in reducing the severity of adverse impacts caused by an earthquake disaster in a specific locality. The purpose of the study was to recommend useful measures for disaster risk management. It also more particularly aimed at assessing mechanisms employed in reducing the disaster risk and integrating knowledge of disasters and hazards in primary and secondary school curricula. The study was carried out in Rungwe Volcanic Province in Rungwe District, Tanzania, and included recording people’s attitudes towards earthquake disaster and locations of schools. It employed focus group discussions, public hearings and interviews in order to capture the actual situation relating to risk and vulnerability assessments by the community. The study revealed high levels of risk and vulnerability to the impact of earthquakes on the part of the community, who accepted earthquakes as a normal phenomenon and therefore did not employ special measures to reduce the impact. The study showed that the community’s coping mechanisms and the extent to which disaster management knowledge has been integrated in school curricula are inadequate in addressing earthquake disasters. It is thus recommended that traditional and modern technologies be integrated in curricula and later in sustainable practices; such technologies include the belief in ‘Nyifwila’, traditional housing style and wooden housing, and non-structural planning for disaster risk management.
