Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502007000700015
Abstract: purpose: the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the sugarcane biopolymer membrane in femoral artery patch angioplasty on dogs. methods: eight dogs were submitted to bilateral femoral artery patch angioplasty with a sugarcane biopolymer membrane patch on one side and e-ptfe patch on the contralateral side. this research was performed at experimental surgical research laboratory of the centro de ciências da saúde at universidade federal de pernambuco. the dogs were submitted to a new surgery at 180 days after the patch angioplasty in order to harvest the femoral artery. all the animals were evaluated by: clinical examination, measure of femoral artery diameter, arteriogram and doppler fluxometry. yet the material harvested was sent to histological study. each animal served as its own control. results: in all vessels of both groups there were no cases of infection, aneurysm formation, rupture or pseudoaneurysm formation and thrombosis. in both groups it was observed a chronic inflammatory reaction with lymphocytes, neutrophils and fibrosis in the outer surface of the patches. it was observed fibrosis in the inner surfaces of all the patches. in e-ptfe patches occurred invasion by fibroblasts. conclusion: the sugarcane biopolymer membrane can be used as a patch in femoral artery angioplasty on dogs.

Abstract: background: achievement of an ideal arterial substitute to be used in the reconstruction of small- and medium-caliber arteries is still the main objective of most scientific research studies developed in the area of vascular substitutes. sugarcane biopolymer membrane could be extremely useful to perform vascular reconstruction in arteries with diameter smaller than 4 mm, allowing treatment of diseases that affect millions of people in brazil and worldwide. objective: to evaluate the hemodynamic and histopathologic behavior of sugarcane biopolymer membrane when used as a patch in femoral artery angioplasty in dogs. method: eight adult mongrel dogs, under general anesthesia, underwent percutaneous doppler velocimetry of the left and right femoral arteries for preoperative control at the health sciences center experimental research laboratory of universidade federal de pernambuco. after being disinfected, the dogs underwent femoral artery patch angioplasty using a sugarcane membrane biopolymer patch on the left side and an expanded ptfe (e-ptfe) patch on the right side. the dogs underwent daily clinical evaluation for the first week and weekly thereafter. clinical evaluation consisted of an examination of femoral artery pulses, gait assessment and verification as to whether there was any pulsatile tumor, bruising, hemorrhage or surgical wound infection. one hundred and eighty days after the angioplasties, percutaneous doppler velocimetry of the femoral arteries was performed under general anesthesia. next, the dogs underwent dissection of the femoral arteries, measurement of the arterial diameter and perioperative doppler velocimetry proximally and distally to the artery angioplasty. laparotomy was then performed to expose the abdominal aorta for angiographic access. the femoral artery segments with patches were harvested for histopathologic analysis, and the animals were sacrificed under a toxic dosage of anesthetic. results: at 180 days, no cases of surgical wound in

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the sensitivity of the interstitial lymphoscintigraphy in the visualization of the thoracic duct confluence. method: we analyzed 535 lymphoscintigraphies performed at the nuclear medicine department of the hospital das clínicas at the universidade federal de pernambuco from 1993 to 1999. all tests were performed through the subcutaneous injection, in the first interdigital space of each foot, of 1 ml of the dextran 500 labeled with technetium-99m. mresults: the thoracic duct confluence was visualized in 424 patients, which represent 79.3% of the lymphoscintigraphies performed. considering the gender, the thoracic duct confluence was visualized in 191 females patients (77% of the cases) and in 233 males patients (80.9% of the cases). conclusion: this report confirms the importance of the interstitial lymphoscintigraphy as the test choice for the assessment of the lymphatic circulation and demonstrates that this test has a high sensitivity to visualize the thoracic duct confluence.

Rita Aguiar, Manuel Ferreira Gomes, Elisabete Bento Guerreiro, Tiago Marques, Carla Santos
Case Reports in Clinical Medicine (CRCM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/crcm.2016.510054
Abstract: Background: Spondylodiscitis and spinal epidural abscesses are rare pathologic entities, but increasing in incidence. Group G beta hemolytic Streptococcus has been recently described associated with human infections. They often present clinically in a non-specific fashion, a fact which can lead to diagnostic delay, with serious consequences for the patient. Case Report: An 80-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with complaints of fever for three days, dysuria, hematuria, and back pain. Both septic embolizations and spondylodiscitis due to Group G beta hemolytic Streptococcus were detected. The patient was successfully treated with intravenous penicillin G for eight weeks, followed by oral amoxicillin for five months. Discussion: In all patients with spondylodiscitis, infective endocarditis should be considered, particularly in patients with heart valve disease history, since spondylodiscitis may be the presenting sign of an infective endocarditis. A high level of suspicion is therefore necessary in order correctly diagnose such entities as quickly as possible. The present case illustrates the pathogenic potential of group G streptococci in spondylodiscitis and native valve endocarditis.

Abstract: background: diarrhea in seropositive human immunodeficiency virus patients is one of the most important and disabling symptoms, and often decreases their quality of life. cytomegalovirus colitis is among the principal causes of this symptom and colonoscopy is the gold standard examination to diagnose it. aim: to define the main endoscopic findings in seropositive human immunodeficiency virus patients with cytomegalovirus colitis. methods: two hundred and forty-three colonoscopies were performed in 200 seropositive human immunodeficiency virus patients with diarrhea associated or not to abdominal pain or gastrointestinal bleeding, over 10-year period, whom 51 patients were diagnosed with cytomegalovirus colitis. full length colonoscopy with ileum intubation was always tried and multiple biopsies of all segments examined, including endoscopically normal segments, were attempted. all diagnoses were confirmed by histologic and immunohistochemical studies. results: total colonoscopy was possible in 98.03% and ileum intubation in 88.23% of these cytomegalovirus colitis patients. at colonoscopy, a heterogeneous ulcerative pattern was presented in 72.54%, an inflammatory process of the mucosa in 21.56% and 5.88% of the patients mucosa was endoscopically normal. conclusion: full length colonoscopy with ileum intubation and multiples biopsies of all segments, even when they are endoscopically normal, have always to be attempted in cases of seropositive human immunodeficiency virus patient with diarrhea.
