Small Sample Estimation in Dynamic Panel Data Models: A Simulation Study  [PDF]
Lorelied.A. Santos, Erniel B. Barrios
Open Journal of Statistics (OJS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ojs.2011.12007
Abstract: We used simulated data to investigate both the small and large sample properties of the within-groups (WG) estimator and the first difference generalized method of moments (FD-GMM) estimator of a dynamic panel data (DPD) model. The magnitude of WG and FD-GMM estimates are almost the same for square panels. WG estimator performs best for long panels such as those with time dimension as large as 50. The advantage of FD-GMM estimator however, is observed on panels that are long and wide, say with time dimension at least 25 and cross-section dimension size of at least 30. For small-sized panels, the two methods failed since their optimality was established in the context of asymptotic theory. We developed parametric bootstrap versions of WG and FD-GMM estimators. Simulation study indicates the advantages of the bootstrap methods under small sample cases on the assumption that variances of the individual effects and the disturbances are of similar magnitude. The boostrapped WG and FD-GMM estimators are optimal for small samples.

Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism , 2010, DOI: 10.1155/2010/697842
Abstract: Background. Carbohydrates have varied rates of digestion and absorption that induces different hormonal and metabolic responses in the body. Given the abundance of carbohydrate sources in the Philippines, the determination of the glycaemic index (GI) of local foods may prove beneficial in promoting health and decreasing the risk of diabetes in the country. Methods. The GI of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) grits, milled rice, and the mixture of these two food items were determined in ten female subjects. Using a randomized crossover design, the control bread and three test foods were given on separate occasions after an overnight fast. Blood samples were collected through finger prick at time intervals of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min and analyzed for glucose concentrations. Results. The computed incremental area under the glucose response curve (IAUC) varies significantly across test foods (<.0379) with the pure QPM grits yielding the lowest IAUC relative to the control by 46.38. Resulting GI values of the test foods (bootstrapped) were 80.36 (SEM 14.24), 119.78 (SEM 18.81), and 93.17 (SEM 27.27) for pure QPM grits, milled rice, and rice-QPM grits mixture, respectively. Conclusion. Pure QPM corn grits has a lower glycaemic response compared to milled rice and the rice-corn grits mixture, which may be related in part to differences in their dietary fibre composition and physicochemical characteristics. Pure QPM corn grits may be a more health beneficial food for diabetic and hyperlipidemic individuals.

However, the rate of digestion and absorption of carbohydrates varies with the chemical components of the food source, the processing and storage conditions it was subjected to and the other foods that were consumed in conjunction to the carbohydrate-rich food. As shown previously, even through a constant amount of available carbohydrates, significant variations may still be observed in the glucose response to different carbohydrate foods [1]. Thus, the glycaemic index (GI) has been developed to classify carbohydrate foods based on the rate of carbohydrate absorption. Carbohydrates that exhibit low glucose response after ingestion have been shown to be beneficial in the management of diabetes and hypelipidemia [2–4]. Given the abundance of carbohydrate-rich foods in the Philippines, knowledge of the GI may prove to be beneficial in the prevention and management of prevalent metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, in the country. However, only a few local studies have been conducted

“Association between Feelings about Competition and Self-Reported Happiness: Do Racial Differences Matter?” Evidence from the World Value Surveys  [PDF]
Juan Barrios
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2016.45026
Abstract: Drawing on individual data from the World Values Surveys, this paper estimates the importance of racial differences in the relation between individual feelings about competition and self-reported happiness. Racial or ethnic characteristics are split as Asians, Blacks and Whites. In general, people who think competition is good are associated to the same (high) level of happiness as do people who think competition is harmful. Blacks, however, appear to shy away from competition probably because they are not the winners in the competitive process of capitalism. Results among blacks within different countries show similar patterns. These findings are different than and complement previous research which shows a positive or negative relation between competition and well-being. The paper improves over previous research in that it approximates competitive environment by using individual-level measures and considers the relevance of cultural differences. Instrumental variable analysis suggests that there may be a relation of causality stemming from competition to happiness. The paper conjectures about the reasons why individuals who find competition as harmful report higher levels of happiness but do not attempt to establish causality directions.

Abstract: the morphological diagnosis of low grade-cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (cin-1) can not determine its true risk of progression to cervical cancer, leading to strict adherence to a high number of patients whose lesions, most will return spontaneously. the detection of p16ink4a has been proposed as biomarker to differentiate between productive infection self-limiting by human papillomavirus (hpv) and cell transformation induced by oncogenic strains of hpv, however, it is necessary provide evidence of its predictive capacity. we present a series of 14 cases of cin-1 with immunohistochemical detection of p16ink4a in cervical biopsy (8 positive and 6 negative), whose retrospective review of medical records of more than 12 months of cyto-histopathological follow, can describe spontaneous regression in all cases p16ink4a negative and in 3 cases p16ink4a positive (37.5%). the findings in this series of cases coincide with that described in previous studies that has been demonstrated the negative predictive value of the marker to exclude risk of progression-persistence and avoid follow-ups and unnecessary treatments. additionally, these indicates weaknesses to evaluate about the positive predictive value of the test, by not discriminating factors independent of cellular transformation, determining the progression-persistent cin-1, such as genetic and / or immunologic variables of the host.

The MALT-lymphomas of cervix are of very rare presentation. This is the case of a 38 years old patient in which this linfoproliferative disorder was detected incidentally in the routine cuts, during the anatomo-pathological study of a resection specimen product of total hysterectomy motivated by ecographic findings that were compatible with myomatosis of the uterine corpus. The etiology of these tumors is associated with infectious or autoimmune processes, and high radiosensitivity and chemosensitivity to biotherapy against antibodies CD20 (rituximab) has been described.

The authors present the results of a retrospective comparison between the conventional electrocardiogram and the dynamic electrocardiogram (Holter) diagnoses of 143 dogs affected by different cardiovascular diseases. In six cases the comparison was utilized to verify the result of the therapeutic measures. The coincidence between the diagnosis obtained with the conventional electrocardiogram and dynamic electrocardiography of 137 cases was of 26, 54% (32 cases against 105). If the results are analyzed in function of the original diagnosis, of the 61 conventional electrocardiograms considered normal only 12 (19,4%) coincided with the diagnosis of the dynamic studies, while the remains 49 (79,03%) showed the presence of some cardiac arrhythmia. Of the 75 conventional electrocardiograms that showed the presence of arrhythmias, 20 (26,67%) have a similar diagnosis, while the remains dynamic studies (55 - 73,33%) presen
Determinación del valor normal del índice de Tei del ventrículo izquierdo en caninos sanos Determination of the normal value of the left ventricular Tei index in healthy dogs
C. Lightowler,J. Barrios,O. Casalonga,B. Ditollo
InVet , 2006,
Recent studies have showed that in the majority of the patients with congestive cardiac failure coexist alteration of systolic and diastolic function and in many cases the systolic function is normal and the cardiac failure this supported only by the diastolic dysfunction. This fact has therapeutic, diagnostic and prognostic implications. Recently, Tei and co-workers proposed a new Doppler index that permits the combined evaluation of some of the systolic and diastolic intervals. Supported by these antecedents the authors determined the normal value of the left ventricular Tei index in healthy dogs in order to evaluate the systodiatolic function. A mean value of 0,372 with a standard deviation of 0,04 was obtained. Likewise the authors could verified that not correlation exists with cardiac rate (P> 0,0975) neither with the systolic arterial pressure (P> 0,0895) but a significant correlation exists with the left ventricular fractional shortening (P<0,05).
