Automatic Information Processing Bias to Stress Factors by Older Adults with and without Diabetes  [PDF]

Advances in Aging Research (AAR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aar.2014.33032
Abstract:

A sample of 65 older adults (with and without diabetes) as well as a sample of 84 healthy young people were required to take affective priming studies to compare recognition latencies of stress related word pairs against recognition latencies of positive, negative and neutral word pairs. Moreover, older adults took a stress questionnaire related to relevant disturbing events in the third age. The goal was to test any automatic emotional processing bias to these events. Results suggested that even when people with diabetes obtained low stress test scores, they showed automatic cognitive bias to process stressful events differently than older adults without diabetes and young people. This suggested that people with diabetes patients’ controlled strategies to cope with stress might not be aware of such an automatic cognitive bias. It is argued that this information processing style to stressful events makes patients prone to cognitive emotional vulnerability.

Systematic Thinking Underlying People with Diabetes’ Beliefs on Health Outcomes: An Information Integration Theory Approach  [PDF]

Advances in Aging Research (AAR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aar.2014.34040
Abstract: A sample of 76 older adults (27 with diabetes and 49 without diabetes) were selected to judge three information factors, metamemory related to—drug organization—stress and physical activity in relation to their perception of self-care. In order to do so, an Integration Information Theory was considered to determine systematic cognitive algebra rules underlying judgment about 24 different health self-care scenarios. Results indicate that older adults without diabetes use a summative cognitive rule to integrate relevant health information but older adults with diabetes do not. Both groups agreed that metamemory was the most relevant factor to their self-care followed by stress and physical activity. However, valuation of these factors does depend on the type of group. Implications of these results to healthcare a behavioral nursing intervention are discussed in this paper.

Open Journal of Medical Psychology (OJMP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojmp.2014.35038
Abstract: Experimental single case studies on automatic processing of emotion were carried on a sample of people with an anxiety disorder. Participants were required to take three Audio Visual Entrainment (AVE) sessions to test for anxiety reduction as proclaimed by some academic research. Explicit reports were measured as well as pre-attentive bias to stressing information by using affective priming studies before and after AVE intervention. Group analysis shows that indeed AVEs program applications do reduce anxiety producing significant changes over explicit reports on anxiety levels and automatic processing bias of emotion. However, case by case analysis of six anxious participants shows that even when all of the participants report emotional improvement after intervention, not all of them reduce or eliminate dysfunctional bias to stressing information. Rather, they show a variety of processing styles due to intervention and some of them show no change at all. Implications of this differential effect to clinical sets are discussed.

Journal of Encapsulation and Adsorption Sciences (JEAS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jeas.2016.62005
Abstract: Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are usually suitable candidates for the development of drug delivery devices. Sol-gel chemistry represents an easy method to obtain porous silica nanoparticles. Mesoporous silica nanomaterials have been widely used for drug delivery purposes. In this work we synthesized silica based materials using two molar alkoxide:water ratios 1:4 and 1:8, incorporating paracetamol to develop a nano-sized matrix for controlled release purposes. The samples exhibited different values for surface area, porosity, particle size and distinct punctual defects. Infrared and UV-visible spectroscopic studies were carried out to demonstrate the effect of water concentration and the adequate incorporation of paracetamol molecules. Nitrogen adsorption characterization was realized and the estimated BET surface values were from 532 to 825 m2/g. Kinetic analysis of drug release profiles was performed using the hyperbola model. Transmission electron micrographs showed that all the materials formed aggregates of small particles with size between 10 - 60 nm. Mesoporous SiO2 materials were proved to be a suitable system for controlled release of paracetamol.

Lópezrez, Ernesto;Rodríguez Hernández, Cesáreo;Garza García, Ramón;
Revista fitotecnia mexicana , 2010,
Abstract: chilca (senecio salignus dc., asteraceae) root has shown effectiveness for the control of the mexican bean weevil (zabrotes subfasciatus boheman, coleoptera: bruchidae); however, several other factors should be evaluated in order to reach a rational use of this natural resource and to obtain the best insecticidal effect. several bioassays were carried out in order to know: a) the effecttiveness of the root of s. salignus collected at several dates and different storage times, against z. subfasciatus; b) the period that chilca roots can protect against this insect pest; c) the effect of chilca root powder on the oviposition of z. subfasciatus in bean (phaseolus vulgaris l., fabaceae) grains cv. 'flor de mayo'; and d) the effect of this powder on a native black bean from chiapas, méxico, also regarding the control of this weevil. ten pairs of the mexican bean weevil adults were placed in a glass jar which contained from 0.05 to 0.5 g of ground chilca root and 100 g of bean grains. at 4 and 50 d after infestation, insect mortality and number of eggs per grain were registered, along with emergence of new adults and level of damage to the bean grains. the powder of chilca root at 0.5 % (5 g of powder per kg of bean grains), collected at any time of the year and stored up to seven months, was able to kill the insect adults of z. subfasciatus and thus to protect the stored bean up to 30 d after impregnation. the chilca powder also inhibited the insect oviposition, and was effective against the pest on a native black bean.

Revista de Ciencias Sociales , 2010,
Abstract: the objective of the study was to determine what type of organizational culture exists in research institutes in the health area at the university of zulia. organizational principles, decision making and resistance to change were considered. descriptive, field, trans-sectional research was carried out; a questionnaire with a likert-type scale was applied using surveys validated by five specialists as having a reliability of 0.95. results were analyzed through descriptive statistics (average), where 54.76% felt committed to the organizational principles, 57.53% reported the absence of workshops for creating ideas for decision making and finally, 64.81% indicated that changing ways of carrying out tasks is a waste of time. conclusions were that a weak organizational culture exists, which does not integrate the personnel according to the objectives the institution pursues; also, that inadequate training of personnel to fulfill their functions makes decision making difficult, due to which changes are not accepted at the required moment. in this sense, the challenge remains for higher education institutions to incentivize the disappearance of orthodox postures in the organizational culture, transforming it into one that is stronger, more participative and less resistant to change.
