Silicosis and Smoking: Intrinsic Phenomenon in the Respiratory System  [PDF]

Abstract: Purpose of the Review: Some physiopathological mechanisms that could support the relationship between tobacco and silicosis have been postulated but exact pathogenesis remains unknown. Recent Findings: Local inflammation in workers with silicosis is a complex process characterized by an infiltration of inflammatory cells in the respiratory alveolus, accompanied by an increase in the expression of cytokines, chemokines, enzymes, growth factors and adhesion molecules. Although in smokers without silicosis a similar pattern of inflammation can be observed, in workers with silicosis this process seems to be characterized by more pronounced increases in structural damage in the lungs. Altered balance of innate and adaptive immunity both play key roles in the pathogenesis of extensive fibrosis in a molecular level, influenced by individual susceptibilities and genetic traits. Conclusion: The identification of the molecular mechanism and a potential protective genotype for silicosis opens a window for the eradication of this occupational respiratory disease. This should encourage us to continue exploring and searching for the relation between the genetic polymorphism and the inorganic silica particle.

Abstract: El propósito de este ensayo consiste en analizar el discurso de Hugo Chávez como líder político en funciones de gobierno desde el punto de vista semántico-pragmático. Como corpus se utilizó el texto de la alocución televisada del Presidente cuyo propósito fue explicar el presupuesto de Venezuela para el a o 2000. Los resultados del análisis mostraron que existe una correspondencia entre el componente semántico y el pragmático del discurso; y aunque en la superficie su alocución se muestra un registro y características de la coloquialidad y oralidad del discurso privado, trata de presentar un perfil consistente con su imagen de candidato, basado en la voluntad de un cambio radical en el sistema político, en la política económica y con ejes tales como cercanía con el pueblo, voluntad de materializar iniciativas y manteniendo una conducta apegada a sus creencias.

Abstract: on these current days, the world's economic map is dominated by clusters or economic groupings, present in almost all geographical levels, which have demonstrated to be critical masses with an unusual success on specific fields. such clusters are groupings of firms and related institutions that compete, and at the same time cooperate. in this new context of economic activity organization, industrial groupings (clusters) are fundamental, and their performance has become a key factor for cities', regions' and nations' competitive advantages. in this paper, i analyze and implement a methodology that identifies benchmark clusters, useful for applied regional based economic studies. the approach addressed here, applied to the mexican economy, is based on feser and bergman's methodology, and an extension due to rey and mattheis.

Abstract: En la actualidad, el mapa económico mundial es dominado por lo que se denominan grupos estratégicos, agrupamientos económicos o clusters, los cuales han demostrado ser masas críticas de un éxito competitivo inusual en campos específicos, presentes en casi cualquier región geográfica. Tales agrupamientos son concentraciones de compa ías e instituciones interconectadas en un campo en particular, que compiten y cooperan. Dentro de este nuevo contexto de organización de las actividades económicas, los agrupamientos industriales (clusters) son fundamentales, hasta el punto en que la capacidad competitiva de las ciudades, regiones o estados nacionales descansa en el desempe o de sus clusters y de las interacciones entre los elementos que determinan su funcionamiento. En este trabajo se analiza y aplica una metodología para identificar las cadenas productivas, como referencia para el análisis de la base económica de los clusters industriales regionales. El enfoque se basa en la metodología desarrollada por Feser y Bergman, y una extensión debida a Rey y Mattheis, aplicada a la economía mexicana.

Abstract: In the present paper, the theoretical frame work of magneto hydrodynamics (MHD) is used to give a solution of the problem about the origin, persistence and disappearance of the Sunspots; as well as their tendency to appear as bipolar magnetic couples. According to the results obtained, a possible explanation about the change of polarity in both solar hemispheres is given. Heuristic but logical arguments about the periodicity of the phenomenon of the observed magnetic polarity and the tendency of couples of Sunspots to appear solely in certain latitudes that can be called tropical regions of the Sun are presented. Finally, an indirect experimental test is proposed to show the possible process that produces the polarity of the Sunspots in a given cycle, as well as the invertion of that polarity in the next solar cycle.

Abstract: The theoretical frame developed by A. S. Eddington is used in this paper in order to study the problem of internal structure and stars stability. A new hypothesis is developed that consists of assuming that at early stage of their evolution, all gaseous stars generate an intense magnetic field whose mission is to contribute to their stability. A simple methodology is shown to calculate the magnitude of the self-generated magnetic field at any point of the star, and diagrams are built for two specific cases, where the way in which this field varies from the center to the surface can be seen. Finally, the problem of the Cepheid type variables is studied obtaining an expression for the oscillation period carried out from the differential equation of the simple harmonic movement in terms of the appropriate parameters of the star.

Abstract: In the general theory of relativity, the fundamental metric tensor plays a special role, which has its physical basis in the peculiar aspects of gravitation. The fundamental property of gravitational fields provides the possibility of establishing an analogy between the motion in a gravitational field and the motion in any external field considered as a noninertial system of reference. Thus, the properties of the motion in a noninertial frame are the same as those in an inertial system in the presence of a gravitational field. In other words, a noninertial frame of reference is equivalent to a certain gravitational field. This is known as the principle of equivalence. From the mathematical viewpoint, the same special role can be played by the small deformation strain tensor, which describes the geometrical properties of any region deformed because of the effect of some external agent. It can be proved that, from that tensor, all the mathematical structures needed in the general theory of relativity can be constructed.

Abstract: In this paper a solution to the problem of the self-generated magnetic field of the Earth is pro-posed. The solution is based on the existence of a steady-state current distribution localized in some region inside the convective zone of the planet, constituted by the fluid Outer Core. The magnitude of the self-generated magnetic field is obtained and it is shown to be a dipolar field.

Abstract: The theoretical framework developed by A.S. Eddington for the study of the inner structure and stability of the stars has been modified by the author and used in this work to show that knowing the effective temperature and the absolute magnitude, the basic parameters of any gaseous star can be calculated. On the other hand, a possible theoretical explanation of the Hertzsprung-Russel Diagram is presented.
