Andragogy and Engagement in Online Learning: Tenets and Solutions  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, the author discusses two tenets of online learning: andragogy and learner engagement. What are the foundational principles of these educational practices? In light of the discussed foundational principles, the author examines various techniques which educators could use in order to help online learners succeed in the often-stressful environment. Ultimately, educators want learners to reach the pinnacle of Bloom’s Taxonomy pyramid; by following the suggestions presented in this paper, educators will help learners accomplish this objective. Yet, more research is needed in this area. Therefore, the recommendation is for further study in the relationship between andragogy and the varied mesh of ideas associated with meaningfulness and engagement.

Abstract: With growing concerns about student engagement, the theme of creative teaching and learning provides an excellent catalyst to consider methods that enhance students’ classroom experiences. Good teaching is akin to weaving a fabric of connectedness between student, teacher, and subject (Palmer, 2007). Teacher-student connection and student engagement are the two most important ingredients in teaching (Lowman, 1995). This paper explores three effective methods of weaving the fabric and engaging students in higher education. Examples of how to use humor, music, and movement to deepen learning while adding energy, engagement, and interaction are offered. A review of research supporting the methods explored in this paper is included.

Abstract: In this article, we describe a particular aspect of the teaching-learning process: students’ cooperation. Our research attempts to understand the modalities of student engagement at a private institution in Tunisia. We mobilize the theoretical framework of the ecology of physical education (Tousignant, 1982) as a framework for this research. The data results from video recording and ethnographic observations of a gymnastics cycle conducted by a teacher specialist of tennis. The study was conducted according to a macroscopic analysis of students’ behavior of cooperation during three sessions of school education of gymnastics. Through the comparison of forms of engagement for contrasted students (high vs. low), the results reveal recurring characteristics and differences in degrees of cooperation between students according to their school levels.

Abstract: Objective: To investigate patient engagement to gain understandings of professional and patient’s views and inform the development of a patient engagement conceptual framework for further development of a valid and reliable evaluated measure. Method: 17 selected hospitals from Hong Kong East Cluster, Hong Kong West Cluster, Kowloon Central Cluster, Kowloon East Cluster and New Territory East Cluster of Hospital Authority Hong Kong involved in the study. Focus groups were conducted with 37 medical staffs, which included 15 doctors and 22 nurses, and 33 patients. Semi-structured qualitative interview study, with purposive sampling and constant comparative analysis. Results: Data were analyzed using a qualitative approach of latent content analysis. Patient engagement is a multi-dimensional concept. Five hierarchical themes separately from the patient and medical staff’s perspectives containing different conceptions and attitudes related to patient engagement have been identified and summarized. Through analyzing both professional and patients’ perspectives, a hierarchical framework incorporating patients-professional dynamically fluctuating relationship was built. The framework divides engagement into five levels and five stages. Conclusions: Patient engagement is recognized by more patients and professionals as a means and a cornerstone to build the foundation of patient-centered-care. Our framework encourages that patient engagement related to not only an individual patient’s behavior but a reciprocal, dynamic and pluralistic relationship with their professionals and healthcare systems. Understand this relationship can help us better conceptualizing, evaluating, and implementing interventions to improve the population’s health.
Burnout and engagement: A South African perspective

Abstract: Work wellness, and more specifically burnout and engagement are important focus areas of research and intervention in South Africa. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the factorial validity, construct equivalence and item bias of measuring instruments of burnout and work engagement. Furthermore, few studies have been conducted regarding causal models of burnout as well as interventions to prevent and/or manage burnout in a multicultural context. Little is known about the causes of work engagement and interventions to increase it. Research should be conducted to validate measuring instruments of burnout, work engagement and predictors thereof in multicultural contexts. Research is also needed regarding the effectiveness of interventions to manage work engagement and to prevent and/or manage burnout. Opsomming Werkwelstand, en meer spesifiek psigiese uitbranding en begeestering is belangrike fokusareas vir navorsing en intervensie in Suid-Afrika. Tog is min studies onderneem rakende die faktorgeldigheid, konstrukekwivalensie en itemsydigheid van meetinstrumente van psigiese uitbranding en werksbegeestering. Verder is min studies onderneem ten opsigte van oorsaaklike modelle van psigiese uitbranding sowel as intervensies om uitbranding in ‘n multikulturele konteks te voorkom en/of te bestuur. Min is bekend oor die oorsake van werksbegeestering en intervensies om dit te verhoog. Navorsing moet onderneem word ten einde meetinstrumente van psigiese uitbranding, werksbegeestering en voorspellers daarvan in ‘n multikulturele konteks te valideer. Navorsing rakende die effektiwiteit van intervensies om werksbegeestering te bestuur en psigiese uitbranding te voorkom en/of te hanteer, is ook noodsaaklik.
Antecedents of work engagement in a multinational oil company

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the antecedents of work engagement. Stratified random samples (N=171) were taken of employees in a multinational oil company. The Work Engagement Scale and the Work Experiences Scale were administered. The results confirmed that psychological meaningfulness and psychological availability were significant predictors of work engagement. Psychological meaningfulness displayed the strongest positive relationship with engagement. The relationship of co-worker relations and work role fit with work engagement was mediated by the psychological condition of meaningfulness. Cognitive, emotional and physical resources had the strongest effect on psychological availability. Co-worker relations and co-worker norms predicted psychological safety. The relationship between resources and work engagement was mediated by the psychological condition of availability.

Abstract: This study develops a computational model for simulation of behaviors of learners under the influence of motivation and engagement environment based on Cellular Automata (CA). It investigates the changing patterns of learners’ behaviors when motivation and engagement environment are assigned with different values respectively. The simulation process indicates that the internal factor, which is the motivation in this paper, plays a key role in changing learners’ behaviors under certain circumstance and the engagement environment also significantly influences learner’s perception. The results obtained also show good agreement with the phenomenon generally being observed in practice.

Abstract: This paper examines online engagement in the business learning context among international and local students in Australia. Online engagement among business students and lecturers has long been criticized as the key problems in adopting online materials and methods in business education. In examining factors affecting online engagement in business education, the data was collected from UNDERGRADUATE students in finance, accounting and international business undergraduate students. Moreover, learning and teaching techniques that enhance the quality of online engagement were also investigated in this study. Key factors include the nature of the course, technical aspects from the institutions and cultural BACKGROUNDS from the students. This study also finds roles of key stakeholders in business education such as lecturers, technicians and policy makers CONTRIBUTING to the level of online engagement among business students.

Abstract: This article discusses the theoretical concepts underpinning a multimodal approach to poetry teaching and considers a number of ways in which this can be adopted in practice. It discusses what is entailed by the concept of multimodality and examines the claims made about the benefits of employing a multimodal approach. It reviews the literature on multimodality and examines how teachers may blend a variety of techniques and resources in order not just to engage their students with poetry but also to activate language learning. In particular, this article examines how by tapping students’ visual and digital literacy skills they are enabled to create video poems, podcasts, hypertexts and wikis, all of which represent new ways of using language and experiencing poetry. Through constant reference to the research carried out so far, this article seeks to show how by means of a multimodal approach poetry can act as a springboard for the development of students’ language proficiency and creative engagement.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the scope of virtual worlds for student engagement in higher education. The motivation for the study is the gap in opportunities for interactivity that exist for off-campus students compared with on-campus students. A student taking a course at a university, while located in a different geographic location, has limited opportunity for student-student and student-teacher interaction; this effects student engagement significantly. We conduct a feasibility analysis for engaging students in a virtual world; Second Life is used as the test-bed to create the virtual world environment. We present preliminary findings, the promises and the limitations of Second Life as an immersive environment for engaging students.
