Introduction. Graduate professional educational programs are very rigorous and challenging, often leading to increased physiological stress and perceived anxiety for the enrolled student. Stress and anxiety levels in physical therapy students are higher than that in their age and gender matched peers. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of an animal-assisted intervention on stress and anxiety of entry-level physical therapist (PT) students prior to a laboratory practical exam. Subjects. Twenty-three first-year PT students (mean age 23.4 ± 1.70) participated in this study. Methods. A 15-20-minute intervention which either included a therapy dog or no therapy dog was performed prior to the students’ laboratory practical exam. Following the intervention, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and state anxiety measures using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were obtained. Results were compared to baseline measures as well as between each of four intervention trials using repeated measures ANOVA or Freidman test (alpha level of p < 0.05). A post-participation questionnaire was administered at the end of the study. Results. Statistical significance was found between the no dog trials (Trial 1 & Trial 4) and the dog trials (Trial 2 & Trial 3) for state anxiety (p = 0.000), indicating that state anxiety scores were lower when students were exposed to the therapy dog compared to when no dog was present. No statistically significant effects of the therapy dog were observed for HR, SBP or DBP (p > 0.005). Discussion and Conclusion. The results of this study indicate that animal-assisted interventions may be beneficial in reducing perceived anxiety for students in graduate professional educational programs prior to an examination.
Closed exact Lagrangians in the symplectization of contact manifolds
Emmy Murphy
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: For a certain class of exotic contact manifolds of dimension greater than 3, we show that there is an abundance of closed exact Lagrangians in their symplectization. All of these Lagrangians are displaceable by Hamiltonian isotopy, and many of the examples are nulhomotopic.
Loose Legendrian Embeddings in High Dimensional Contact Manifolds
Emmy Murphy
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: We give an h-principle type result for a class of Legendrian embeddings in contact manifolds of dimension at least 5. These Legendrians, referred to as loose, have trivial pseudo-holomorphic invariants. We demonstrate they are classified up to ambient contact isotopy by smooth embedding class equipped with an almost complex framing. This result is inherently high dimensional: analogous results in dimension 3 are false.
Nomogramas para ensamble y uso de la Inyectora Unidrench? de dispositivo venturi

Abstract: the term drench addresses the application of an agrochemical dissolved in irrigation water to the soil. unidrench? is a venturi based portable injector, useful to drench small to big areas cultivated in beds with species such as flowers, aromatic herbs, vegetables, etc. when connected to any type of hydrant supplying pressurized water, the injector allows efficient manual drenching by hose, making use of diverse nozzle shapes such as the horn, elbow, knob and flute, among others. provided that this equipment's specifications can be adjusted to fit particular user needs, the current research study sought to develop the hydraulic characterization of unidrench?, and to establish its performance nomograms. hence, at the hydraulics laboratory of the faculty of engineering of universidad nacional de colombia, the following equipment features were tested: (i) injection and irrigation flows for free discharge, double horn, flute and 400 and 1,000 hole double knob nozzle types; (ii) two different pvc hose lengths (50 and 75 m); (iii) both for the latter and for the venturi injectors of the system, two contrasting diameters (1.9 and 2.54 cm, equivalent to 0.75 and 1 inches, respectively); and (iv) six different pressure regulator levels (15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 psi). technical operation instructions have been included to facilitate the use of the equipment.
From psychotherapy to emotional well being
Deurzen,Emmy Van;
Análise Psicológica , 2006,
Abstract: this paper considers the relevance of philosophy to psychotherapy. it traces the progression of early western philosophy in its approach to human emotions and considers how this is mirrored in current psychotherapeutic practice. it argues that psychotherapists have much to learn from philosophy and that a clear understanding of life events and issues is essential for doing good psychotherapy.

Lagrangian caps

Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: We establish an $h$-principle for exact Lagrangian embeddings with concave Legendrian boundary. We prove, in particular, that in the complement of the unit ball $B$ in the standard symplectic $\R^{2n}, 2n\geq 6$, there exists an embedded Lagrangian $n$-disc transversely attached to $B$ along its Legendrian boundary.
Subflexible symplectic manifolds
Emmy Murphy,Kyler Siegel
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: We introduce a class of Weinstein domains which are sublevel sets of flexible Weinstein manifolds but are not themselves flexible. These manifolds exhibit rather subtle behavior with respect to both holomorphic curve invariants and symplectic flexibility. We construct a large class of examples and prove that every flexible Weinstein manifold can be Weinstein homotoped to have a nonflexible sublevel set.
