Abstract: The theory of false alarm for laughter could explain the involuntary laugh when someone is tickled. To put this hypothesis to the test, we handed out a questionnaire (180 items) with two hundred university students. Our main results are: In women who like being tickled, we discover components related to pleasure, erotism, feeling of affection, arousal, uncontrollability, domination, sexism and Darwinian (golden ratio) and psychological traits (empathy, low schizotypy and external locus of control) that are not present in the laughter at a stumble. The relation of both types of laughter with sense of humor is also differential. In men who like being tickled, we discover components related to masturbation, sexual fantasies, erotism, arousal, domination, sexist humour and Darwinian (square chin, feeling of masculinity) and psychological traits (empathic stress, low schizotypy, external locus of control and overall self-esteem). The relationship between being tickled and self-esteem shows a double aspect in men: It is positive in men who like being tickled and negative in men who do not like being tickled. For women there is not a relationship between self-esteem and tickling. Our conclusion is that laughter of ticklishness is a Darwinian feature related to empathy.

Sequential effects in deduction: Cost of inference switch

Since the middle of the last century, the study of the human encephalon morphology has been of great interest for the researchers. With the introduction of the computerized axial tomography in 1974, it was possible to expand the knowledge about this area and at the same time provide information on the structural lesions that are pathologies of great psychosocial repercussion like epilepsy and Parkisonism. This paper used 90 tomographic studies on people aged 20-80 years. A series of linear measurements were made and statistically processed. The results showed variations in linear measurements among control, epileptic and Parkisonian subjects

Abstract: background: in 1998 the fda approved the restricted commercialization of thalidomide for the treatment of erithema nodosum leprosum. brazil and mexico have also regulated its use. because of the current use of this teratogenic drug in rheumatological, dermatological, infectious and neoplasic diseases, it is necessary to instruct general practitioners and specialists on its most relevant topics, active principle, benefic and deleterious effects. we carried out a revision by reading and analyzing controlled clinical trials, randomized or not, case series and reviews about thalidomide and its potential uses, that appeared in medline from january 1993 to december 2003, to draw indications and contraindications in light of the evidence found in them. results: forty six randomized controlled studies were found and 22 (with at least 50 patients described) were reviewed (complete articles and/or including design and end points measured - expressed abstracts), plus 10 reviews and 22 cases series. the analysis allowed us to inform potential or restricted and not indicated uses of thalidomide in humans, its pharmacokynetic principles which explain its benefic and deleterious effects, and recommendations to prevent teratogenesis. conclusion: thalidomide is available, with restrictions, for the treatment of erithema nodosum leprosum (first line) and multiple myeloma (refractory to multiple chemotherapy). it appears to have beneficial effects in many other serious conditions refractory to first line treatments: aids, esophagus and prostate cancer and some severe dermatosis, rheumatological or not.
Desarrollo de rotores para turbina eólica de 200 vatios mediante la implementation de tecnología local

Abstract: colombia has a wind potential of nearly 21,000 mw nevertheless, the technology used so far is totally foreign and the knowledge currently available in colombia for producing wind turbines at an industrial level is not sufficient. this article describes the first development stage for low-power (200 w) wind turbine rotors, and presents the selection process of the aerodynamic parameters involved in the design and implementation of two rotors with different profiles (naca 4412 and naca 2509). it includes the corresponding mechanical modeling, the aerodynamic and structural analysis of the two rotors, as well as an energy efficiency comparison under laboratory conditions.

Revista Venezolana de Oncología , 2005,
Abstract: solitary fibrous tumor or mesothelioma of the pleura is a rare entity derived from mesenchymal cells located in the submesothelial lining of the pleural space. it is generally asymptomatic and usually has a benign behavior. we analyze the case of an asymptomatic 64 year-old female with a giant thoracic mass revealed incidentally on a chest radiograph. chest computed tomography revealed a round shaped mass, 9 cm in diameter occupying the right thoracic base. the tumor was resected by a right thoracotomy, using a standard posterolateral incision. the postoperative course was uneventful. intraoperative biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. long-term follow-up is recommended for all patients. in this review, the clinical presentation, radiologic features, histologic findings and treatment for this tumor are described.

Revista Latinoamericana de Psicología , 2008,
Abstract: abstract this paper, framed into the analysis of (in) sensibility to contingencies and its implications in the analysis of verbal regulation, pretends to assess the effectiveness of several methods in order to produce breaking or change of the sensibility patterns, as well as to find attainable differential effects of automatic contingencies in two experimental tasks, using an eight university student's sample. the results show that the use of contextual cues, by means of the amplification or changes in the given rules, is the best procedure to break certain levels of insensibility. the data also show the absence of differential effects of each task contingencies.

Daniel Villalobos-Céspedes,Emilio Galdeano-Gómez,Alfredo Tolón-Becerra
Tourismos : an International Multidisciplinary Journal of Tourism , 2012,
Abstract: Demand for tourist activities related to natural spaces and wildlife has increased over recent years. This paper analyses the influence of socio-demographic and travel indicators on international demand for such tourism in Costa Rica. Using discrete choice models, a range of principal activities is studied: hiking, visits to volcanoes, observation of flora and fauna, bird-watching and canoeing. The results show the favourable influence on demand of variables such as family, travel with partners and country of origin, providing orientation for policies and strategies of the nature-based tourism in Costa Rica, as well as indicators for other countries interested in developing this sector.
