Abstract:

This study was conducted to evaluate the physiological quality of forage seeds after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle, as well as the emergence of seedlings derived from these seeds. Three Fabaceae species were used: tropical kudzu, leucaena and calopo. One hundred grams of seeds of each species were offered, separately, to five bovines. After the start of the dispersion, the faeces of the animals were collected every 6 hours, in a total of 72 hours, being taken to the greenhouse immediately after each collection. The study evaluated the total number of seedlings in the stool, the lengths of roots and aerial parts, as well as the natural and dry seedling weight thirty days after the disposal of the faeces in the greenhouse. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with twelve treatments (sampling periods) and five replications (cattle). The best performance for the total number of seedlings in the faeces of cattle was observed in the kudzu species. The length of the root, length of the aerial part and dry matter seedling weight was observed in the leucaena species, followed by kudzu. The calopo showed low results for all variables due to the high degradation of the seeds.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic parameters of agronomic traits in fixed and segregating populations of castor beans (ricinus communis). the experiments were carried out between 2006 and 2009, with fixed and segregating populations obtained by crosses between the cultivars brs 149 nordestina, brs 188 paragua?u, ebda mpa 17, mirante 10 and sipeal 28. the evaluated traits were: plant height (est), number of days from planting to flowering (flo), number of fruit of three racemes (nfr), number of seeds of three racemes (nsr), and seed weight of three racemes (swr). in the 'brs 149 nordestina' x 'sipeal 28' cross, variances showed greater involvement of environmental effects and the heritability coefficients had values below 50%. in the 'brs 149 nordestina' x 'mirante 10' cross, heritability varied between 24.6 (nfr) and 86% (flo). in the 'brs 188 paragua?u' x 'ebda mpa 17' cross, values of heritability were low for all characters, except flowering. genetic gain may be obtained by selecting for flowering precocity in most of the crosses studied. artificial selection should be applied to advanced generations because the environment has a strong influence on the phenotypic traits. more rigorous breeding methods should be adopted for the segregating population, in order to obtain higher genetic gain.

Abstract: this study aimed to evaluate the growth index of massai grass during two regrowth cycles in a greenhouse under five levels of nitrogen (0, 150, 300, 450 and 600 mg n/dm3 of soil) and eight growth ages (5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23 and 26 days) in a split-plot design with five replications. the following variables were evaluated: net assimilation rate, herbage growth rate, relative growth rate, leaf area ratio, leaf weight ratio and specific leaf area. the effect of nitrogen was detected on the variables net assimilation rate (regrowths 1 and 2), leaf area ratio (regrowth 1), leaf weight ratio (regrowths 1 and 2), specific leaf area (regrowths 1 and 2) and herbage growth rate (regrowths 1 and 2). the growth ages influenced the relative growth rate (regrowth 2) and the net assimilation rate (regrowth 2). the net assimilation rate presented linear effect, estimated in 0.70 and 2.86 g/m2 leaf.day-1 for the 0 and 600 mg n/dm3 soil, respectively (regrowth 1). for each milligram of n/dm3 added, the leaf area ratio was reduced in 0.0000258 m2 leaf/g plant (regrowth 1). the herbage growth rate was estimated in 1.38 and 37.02 g/m2.day-1 (regrowth 1), and 4.37 and 32.20 g/m2.day-1 (regrowth 2) for the 0 and 600 mg n/dm3 soil, respectively. the massai grass' growth is favored by nitrogen fertilization, and little do the growth ages affect the growth index of the plants.

Abstract: the objective of the present study was to use the observed data on the changes of the neutral detergent fiber (ndf), lignin and carbohydrate fractions and of the related degradation rates of 15 sugar cane varieties, to evaluate this nutrient availability in promoting the milk production of the crossbred holstein cows using the cncps system. a concentrate supplement compose by corn silage, whole cottonseed and soybean meal and urea was used to attend the nutritional requirement of this animals to produce 10 kg of daily milk. the values used to predict the response in the milk production were: ndf (%dm) - 40,50 and 60, lignin (%ndf) 10,14 and 18, digestion rates (% /h) of the non fiber carbohydrates (nfc) - 10,20 and 30 and digestion rate (% /h) of the fiber carbohydrates (fc) - 1, 2,5 and 4. the sugar cane, when used as main forage in the diet, caused a reduction in the dry matter intake and energy, limiting the milk production of these animals. the prediction of the amount of milk that could be produced in function of the amount of energy metabolizable (me), supplied by the diet, decreased 24% when the fdn content increased from 40 to 60%, for a 14% of lignin. there was also an increment of 14% in the milk production when the fc digestion rate increased from 1 to 2,5%/h. although the changes in the of ndf and lignin contents and in the carbohydrate digestion rates of the sugar cane varieties, have promoted a great effect on the crossbred holstein cows milk production, it is necessary to validate these results.
