Abstract: the current article aimed to find psychometric evidences in the internal and external motivation to respond without prejudice scale (plant & devine, 1998) taking into account two target-groups: gays and lesbians. two studies were carried out. in study 1 participants were 234 subjects from the general population of jo?o pessoa-pb, with mean age of 26 years old, most of them female (54.3%) and heterosexual (95%). they answered the gay version of the internal and external motivation to respond without prejudice scale (iem scale). confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the two-factor model (agfi = .94, cfi = .98, and rmsea = .05) is the most adequate. cronbach's alphas for the factors were .74 (internal motivation) and .76 (external motivation). in study 2 participants were 202 subjects of general population from the same city, with mean age of 25 years old, most of them female (60.9%) and heterosexual (95%). they answered the lesbian version iem scale. corroborating the previous study, a two-factor model was more adequate (agfi = .90, cfi = .95, and rmsea = .08). cronbach's alphas for the two factors were .71 (internal motivation) and .84 (external motivation). complementary evidences of the construct validity were also presented. in conclusion, the results support the psychometric adequacy (factorial validity, convergent-discriminant validity, and reliability) of the iem scale suggesting it can be used in future studies about prejudice toward gays and lesbians.

Abstract: this study had three main aims: (a) to know to what extend the human values are correlated with desirable attributes of an ideal partner; (b) to identify what attributes could be considered most important for an ideal partner; and (c) to assess if the importance assigned to such desirable attributes vary according to participants' gender. four hundred twenty one people of general population from jo?o pessoa-pb took part in the study with mean age of 25.9 years old. most of them were female (56.8%), single (70.5%), and with undergraduate degree (65.4%). they answered the attributes of ideal partner scale, the basic value survey and demographic questions. results indicated that a consistent set of value subfunctions were correlated with the desirable attributes of an ideal partner (e.g. the subfunctions excitement and normative were correlated with athletic and traditional dimensions, respectively). on the other hand, it was observed the role of participants' gender in differentiating the importance assigned to desirable attributes; the men appreciated more the athletic attribute, and the women did with respect to the sociable attribute. these findings were discussed based on previous research about the importance that men and women give to desirable attributes of ideal partners.

Abstract: people's perception of an aggressive driver and the causes attributed to his/her behavior are provided. participants, 389 undergraduate students, most of them women (53.8%), interpreted aggression scenes in road traffic and revealed their opinion on the aggressive driver (civility and rudeness) and on the driver's motivations (internal and external motivation) to behave with such aggressiveness. participants filled the buss-perry aggression questionnaire and demographic questions. results indicated that the aggressive driver was perceived as demonstrating more rudeness than civility. in the participants' perception, however, the driver's aggressive behavior did not differ from the type of motivation. participants with high scores in verbal aggression and physical aggression tended to minimize the negative connotation of the driver's aggressive behavior. finally, the drive's aggressive behavior was judged as more internally determined when male and young. findings are consistent with the literature.

Abstract: the authors built and checked for evidence of the factorial validity and reliability of a scale for measuring attitudes towards tattoos. the attitudes towards tattoos scale was tested in two studies. in study 1, participants comprised 273 undergraduate students, equally distributed with respect to gender, with an average age of 25. they answered the attitudes towards tattoos scale and demographic questions. it was found that the items showed adequate discriminative power, and the expected unifactorial structure was identified, with cronbach's alpha (α) of 0.96. 245 undergraduate students participated in study 2, most of them male (55%), with an average age of 21. they answered the attitudes towards tattoos scale and demographic questions. based on confirmatory factor analysis, the unifactorial structure found in the previous study was corroborated, and an α of 0.93 was observed. these findings suggest the attitudes towards tattoos scale presents evidence of factorial validity and reliability, and may be used among undergraduate students to measure attitudes towards tattoos.

Abstract: this study investigated the extent to which values explain the attitudes towards tattoos and these, in turn, predict the intention of tattooing. participants were 263 undergraduate students from jo?o pessoa (brazil), with mean age of 20.7 years, mostly men (54.7%) and unmarried (91%). they answered the attitudes toward tattoo scale, the basic values survey and demographic questions (age, gender, and religiosity). results indicated that the participants' attitudes toward tattooing were predominantly negatives, especially among students of natural and exact sciences. the adequacy of a triadic model was proved, where human values predicted attitudes toward tattooing and these, the intention of getting tattooed. specifically, the value subfunction normative promoted negative attitudes toward tattooing, while the subfunction excitement favored more positive attitudes. in conclusion, attitudes toward tattooing have a value basis, accounting for people intention of getting tattooed. future research is suggested to contribute on the explanation of attitudes toward tattooing.

Abstract: aiming to evaluate the quality of products made from medicinal plants, there were analyzed ten samples of horsechestnut, eleven samples of lemongrass, and six samples of gotu kola commercialized in pharmacies from the city of recife (pernambuco, brazil), coming from industries of several parts of the country. we analyzed the technical-scientific information on the labels and/or directions according to the requirements and obligations of brazilian law (laws "rdc 140 of 29/05/2003" and "rdc 102 of 30/11/2000") and to scientific literature embasement. the products' organoleptic characteristics, authenticity, and purity were also evaluated. the absence of obligatory information was verified in 92.59% of the samples. among the blacked terms, it was common to find products that suggested inexistent collateral or adverse effects. technical terms were not standardized and the manufacturers did not provide scientific proof for some of the activities credited to the products. all samples were considered authentic based on the phytochemical and pharmacobotanical tests. the purity analysis considered 59.26% of the samples inappropriate, mainly due to the high total levels of humidity and ashes. it was verified that besides the lack of adequate information and quality of the commercialized products, there is an urgent need for an effective inspection by the suitable agencies.
