Colin, Emerson Carlos;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X1998000200003
Abstract: this work evaluates the use of a filtered beam search (fbs) combined with an ociosity insertion algorithm (oia). the case studied is based on a single machine, with multiple due dates, and distinct earliness and tardiness penalties for each job. the objective function is to minimize total cost. for this, the fbs is used to construct sequences, and the oia is used to obtain schedules. it is assumed that the degree of difficulty of solving the problem is dependent on two parameters: average tardiness factor and relative range of due dates. comparative empirical tests were conducted with computational simulation, where computational solution time and the objective function value were evaluated. the results indicate that in general, the proposed procedure favours a decrease in total cost and, in addition, that before choosing an appropriate procedure, the ideal situation is to know the value of the parameters.
Valcarenghi, Emerson Carlos;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2008000100003
Abstract: this essay tries to show, inside the internalism-externalism dispute, that internalist theory of doxastic justification in useless in obtaining conceptual analysis of knowledge. to show this point, first we try to fix a basis through which we could make an adequate evaluation of the internalist proposal. so, this essay tries, in the most accurate way, to fix the philosophical question in dispute by those proposals. after enunciating it, this essay tries to draw one or more responses from the internalist proposal. with the internalist response in hands, we try to show that it is false and, therefore, that it is not useful to obtain a true analysis of the concept of knowledge.
Emerson Carlos Valcarenghi
Principia : an International Journal of Epistemology , 2010,
Abstract: In this essay, we intend to show that Peter Klein and Marshall Swain defeasibility theories do not resolve the Gettier problem. Klein postulates, to any Gettier counterexample, that there is a true proposition which, when associated with evidence-e of S, genuinely defeats the justification of p to S. Swain postulates that, to any Gettier-type counterexample, there is a true proposition which, when associated with the set of reasons-R of S, ultimately defeats the justification of S to believe p. To show that Klein an Swain proposals do not resolve that problem, this essay presents two Gettier-type counterexamples for which there are no genuine defeaters of justification of p by e to S and there are no defeaters not ultimately defeated of the justification of the belief of S that p by R. After doing that, we try to show that the obtained conclusion regarding Klein and Swain defeasibility theories can be extended to any defeasibility theory of knowledge.
Confiabilidade, coerência e metaincoerência =Reliability, coherence and metaincoherence

Veritas , 2010,
This essay discusses cases of doxastic metaincoherence in which the metaincoherent belief is active in target belief generation. These cases, which are cases of doxastic non justification, show the need to complement reliabilist proposals of justification. This is what we try to do here, but not recurring to any clause of the kind “undermining of justification”.

Host-ectoparasite specificity in a small mammal community in an area of Atlantic Rain Forest (Ilha Grande, State of Rio de Janeiro), Southeastern Brazil
Bittencourt, Emerson Brum;Rocha, Carlos Frederico Duarte;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762003000600015
Abstract: the analyses of the ectoparasite species associated with a small mammal community on ilha grande, a coastal island in southern of the state of rio de janeiro, brazil, evaluated the level of host-ectoparasite specificity. was used the jaccard index for qualitative data to analyse the similarity. the lowest value of similarity occurred between proechimys iheringi and marmosops incanus and between sciurus aestuans and nectomys squamipes (cj = 0.08) and the highest between p. iheringi and oxymycterus sp. (cj = 0.33). this index showed a low value of similarity across the ectoparasite community. the only exception from this pattern of high host specificity occurred with p. iheringi and oxymycterus sp., which shared five species of ectoparasites. the similarity values, for most of the cases, is smaller than 0.2.
Borghi, Emerson;Crusciol, Carlos Alexandre Costa;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2007000200004
Abstract: the objective of this research was to evaluate the effects on corn yield of different modes of corn intercropping with brachiaria brizantha cv. marandu. the experiment was carried out in field conditions, in 2002/2003 and 2003/2004, at fazenda experimental lageado (unesp), in botucatu, sp, brazil. the experimental design was the randomized complete block, as a factorial 2x4, with four replications. the treatments were two row spacings of corn (0.45 and 0.90 m) and four intercropping modalities: single corn; corn intercropped with b. brizantha in the row of sowing; corn intercropped with b. brizantha in space between two rows; and corn intercropped simultaneously with b. brizantha in the row and in the inter-row. the consortium modalities and the spacing used did not damage nitrogen absorption, neither for the corn nor the forage. corn grains productivity in 0.45 m row spacing was lower with the row and inter-row brachiaria consortium. depending on agricultural year, grain yield is greater in the reduced row spacing, when intercropping with brachiaria, independently of the modality.

Electing an All-Party, Proportional, Power-Sharing Coalition, a Government of National Unity  [PDF]
Peter Emerson
Open Journal of Political Science (OJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojps.2013.32009
Abstract:

There are many instances when a group of people might want to choose a committee, a fixed number of individuals to undertake a particular collective function. At their AGM or annual conference, residents in a community group, shareholders of a limited company, members of a trades union, and those of a political party, may all want to elect an executive: one person to be chair, another secretary, a third treasurer, etc. All these posts require different talents and all the individual office bearers undertake necessary but separate functions for the successful operation of that committee. In like manner, a parliament may choose to elect a government of national unity (GNU). The only voting procedure so far devised by which a given electoratethose concerned at an AGM or members of parliament (MPs)may elect, not only those whom they wish to be in cabinet, but also the ministerial posts in which each of those chosen will then serve, is the matrix vote. This paper describes 1) an experiment held at the Political Studies Association of Ireland (PSAI), undergraduate conference in Dublin on 23rd June 2012 inwhich participants, role playing as members of the Irish parliament, elected a GNU; and 2) the matrix vote methodology, such that others may also employ this voting system. An obvious instance would be for the election of an all-party power-sharing executive in a post-conflict zone.
