Pereira, Isabela Rosier Olimpio;Bertolami, Marcelo Chiara;Faludi, André Arpad;Campos, Maria Fernanda;Ferderbar, Simone;Lima, Emersom Silva;Aldrighi, José Mendes;Abdalla, Dulcineia Saes Parra;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2003000400005
Abstract: objective: to assess the effect of endogenous estrogens on the bioavailability of nitric oxide (·no) and in the formation of lipid peroxidation products in pre- and postmenopausal women. methods: nox and s-nitrosothiols were determined by gaseous phase chemiluminescence, nitrotyrosine was determined by elisa, cox (cholesterol oxides) by gas chromatography, and cholesteryl linoleate hydroperoxides (ce18:2-ooh), trilinolein (tg18:2-ooh), and phospholipids (pc-ooh) by hplc in samples of plasma. results: the concentrations of nox, nitrotyrosine, cox, ce18:2-ooh, and pc-ooh were higher in the postmenopausal period (33.8±22.3 mm; 230±130 nm; 55±19 ng/ml; 17±8.7 nm; 2775±460 nm, respectively) as compared with those in the premenopausal period (21.1±7.3 mm; 114±41 nm; 31±13 ng/ml; 6±1.4 nm; 1635±373 nm). in contrast, the concentration of s-nitrosothiols was lower in the postmenopausal period (91±55 nm) as compared with that in the premenopausal p in the premenopausal period (237±197 nm). conclusion: in the postmenopausal period, an increase in nitrotyrosine and a reduction of s-nitrosothiol formation, as well as an increase of cox, ce18:2-ooh and pc-ooh formation occurs. therefore, ?no inactivation and the increase in lipid peroxidation may contribute to endothelial dysfunction and to the greater risk for atherosclerosis in postmenopausal women.

Carvalho,Edilaine Oliveira; Rocha,Emersom Ferreira da;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232011000100021
Abstract: it is a transverse study where a questionnaire of alimentary frequency was applied (qaf) in 150 adults resident of the rural area of the city of ibatiba (es, brazil). qaf classified the alimentary consumption as: habitual (> 4 times in the week), not habitual (<4 times in the week) and rarely (1 time a month), with objective of correlating the alimentary consumption with the chronic-degenerative diseases. the results evidenced a habitual consumption of rice, breads, stalk, bean, cow milk, animal fat, margarine, sugar and coffee, and a non habitual consumption of cake, potato, cookies, manioc, sweet potato, chayote, carrot, beet, pumpkin, juice of fruits, banana, orange, guava, mango and tangerine. it can be concluded that the feeding habit presented by the studied population it can come to increase in a medium or long period the prevalence and occurrences of chronic-degenerative diseases as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and coronary diseases. the alimentary consumption of this population needs concern, because when compared with the national patterns, it is observed some inadequacies, and it is known that this picture comes to every day causing damages the public health.
The mechanisms of corporate governance in the United States: an assessment
Aldrighi, Dante Mendes;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402003000300001
Abstract: this paper aims at evaluating the mechanisms of corporate governance currently at work in the united states. section 1 turns its focus to the reasons accounting for the still relative scarceness of large shareholders in american publicly held companies. the analysis thereafter concentrates on assessing the efficacy of each of the pillars purportedly buttressing the american system of corporate control. the paper argues that the evidence provided by the existing corporate governance literature supports the following propositions: 1) the legal and regulatory framework actually restrains the scope for expropriating minority shareholders, though at the cost of inhibiting institutional investor activism; 2) as a rule, the board of directors do not comply with their mandatory duty of overseeing management, although some progress has recently been made, with directors in several companies becoming less submissive to chief executive officers; 3) the market for corporate control encounters a great number of difficulties (ranging from legal hurdles to high transaction costs and to serious free-riding problems), which are sufficient to cast a cloud on its reliability as a means of repressing managerial inefficiencies and rent-seeking; 4) competition in the product and capital markets is likely to produce effects only in the long-run.
Uma avalia??o das contribui??es de Stiglitz à teoria dos mercados financeiros
Aldrighi, Dante Mendes;
Revista de Economia Política , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572006000100008
Abstract: the objective and originality of this paper lie in identifying stiglitz's main theoretical contributions to financial economics and in briefly portraying the contemporary economic thought out of which these contributions emerged as well as in suggesting their connections with the subsequent economic thought. grounded on a detailed analysis of stiglitz's works on finance, his most important theoretical findings are singled out and gathered into four issues: (1) the conditions under which the modigliani-miller theorem is valid; (2) the inconsistency inherent to the efficient market hypothesis; (3) the microeconomic effects of asymmetrical information in financial markets; and (4) its real macroeconomic effects. in all of these topics, the focal point of stiglitz's theoretical research is the unrealistic underpinnings on which the arrow-debreu competitive equilibrium model relies. it is also emphasised that this same perspective he coherently followed to construct a fully-fledged theoretical framework would be preserved in his empirical investigations, notably about developing countries, on which he has concentrated effort since the beginnings of the nineties.
