Abstract: the seed quality evaluation is essential in quality control programs. thus, vigor tests have been developed to differentiate seed lots, due to the limitations of the germination test. this study aimed at evaluating the electrical conductivity test efficiency for determining the physiological quality of sunflower seeds. ten lots of sunflower seeds (catissol and multissol cultivars) were used. initially, the quality of each lot was determined, besides the seeds moisture content, by using tests of germination, first counting and seedling emergence, in a greenhouse. then, the seeds were submitted to the electrical conductivity test, for four soaking periods (6, 12, 18 and 24 hours), by using disposable plastic cups containing 25 and 50 seeds, in 50 ml and 75 ml of deionized water, at 25oc and 30oc. the experimental design was completely randomized, in a 5x4 factorial scheme (five lots and four soaking periods), separately for each cultivar, with four replications. it was possible to conclude that the electrical conductivity test combining 25oc, 75 ml of deionized water and 50 seeds was sufficiently sensitive to evaluate the physiological quality of sunflower seeds.

Abstract: priming is a technique for controlling seed hydration that allows activation of germination metabolic processes but avoiding the emission of the primary root and providing uniformity and better plant performance in the field. the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydropriming on germination, emergence and seedling development in gherkins. gherkin seeds of the do norte and nordeste cultivars, represented by three lots, were primed at 20 °c on paper towels until they reached 33.5% (nordeste) or 36.6% (do norte) water content. part of the seeds were dried at room temperature (28-34 ° c) and a relative humidity of 45-55% until water content was 7.0 to 8.5%. the physiological potential of the seeds was determined in the laboratory by evaluating germination rate and speed. later, the percentage and emergence speed index, height and dry mass of seedlings 14 days after sowing were determined in the greenhouse. hydropriming benefitted the germination and vigor characteristics of both cultivars.

Abstract: Two simultaneous experiments were accomplished in the Nursery of Ornamental Plants of the Federal University of Paraná State with the objective of evaluating the effect of mineral fertilization on the growth of nursery trees of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana planted directly in the field and in individual packings. The experimental design was the completely randomized with five combinations of NPK 4-30-10 + urea, in grams (0 + 0; 30 + 10; 60 + 20; 90 + 30 and 120 + 40 for the field and 0 + 0; 10 + 4; 20 + 8; 30 + 12 and 40 + 16 for the packings) and four replications. The growth of the plants was observed during one year and the height of plants and the diameter of the trunks were evaluated each two months. The fertilization in covering in the field did not stimulate the growth of the plants. The substrate fertilization promoted significantly higher growth of plants in height and diameter of trunks in the period from September to May. The trunk diameter was more influenced, demonstrating that the secondary growth of the plant is more stimulated by the fertilization. The plant growth in the field was greater than the plant growth in individual packings.

Abstract:

The wider consideration of environmental effects and alternatives in early stages of decision-making has been pointed as one of the major benefits of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). Adopted by virtually all of developed countries and sprawling around emergent and developing ones, it is recognized that SEA effectiveness is attached to its systematic application in development plans and programmes. Brazil and many developing countries have different experiences with this instrument and lacks of definition of a procedural framework to promote the use of SEA in strategic levels of decision. As a consequence development projects are frequently threatened” by impact assessment outcomes, especially when a mandatory project-EIA has to inform decisions. In order to contribute to the implementation of SEA in developing countries, the present paper discusses the potential benefits of using SEA in transport infrastructure plans and programmes, through a case study applied to transport plans in the state of Sao Paulo (south-eastern Brazil). The outcomes indicate that SEA could contribute to improve infrastructure impact assessments, minimizing social and environmental conflicts, augmenting the acceptability of projects and decisions, reinforcing the need for SEA to be systematically implemented in Brazil.

Abstract: purpose: to evaluate, by digital morphometry, the intimal thickening after the placement of two different kinds of stents: polyester covered stainless steel stents (dacron) and non-covered stents implanted in young pigs' infrarenal aortas. methods: the experiment was carried out on two separate groups of pigs. eight polyester-covered stainless steel stents (dacron) and eight stainless steel stents (30-mm long, 8-mm diameter) were deployed through extraperitoneal approach in the normal infrarenal aorta of 16 normolipemic pigs. to allow the passage of the delivery system, a small arteriotomy was performed (phase i). after four weeks, the aorta with the stent was removed en bloc. (phase ii). the values of the hematimetric and lipid analysis did not show any changes that could influence the study. tissue samples of the fixing sites (proximal and distal) of the stents were taken. microscope slices were prepared and submitted to verhoeff's hematoxilin and eosin techniques and sent to morphometric analysis. results: the intima immediately proximal to the device was thicker in the group of covered stents with marginal significance (p=0.054). the distal intimal layer (p=0.185), proximal medial layer of the proximal portion (p=0.141) and distal portion (p=0.375) did not present statistical difference between the two groups. conclusions: patency was 100% in both groups of these normolipemic pigs. after four weeks the intimal layer immediately proximal to the covered stents was ticker when compared to uncovered stents, but this had a borderline significance. the intimal layer distal to covered stents and the media proximal or distal to the devices had similar morphometric features when covered and uncovered stents where compared.

Abstract:
The environmental damage arising from the construction and engineering services was responsible for the appearance of several norms and resolutions regulating and directing the sector’s performance. In this article, we research how professionals with experience in public bids assess the difficulty degree of the implementation of those requirements and how they assess the environmental legislation regarding the protection and conservation of the environment, impact on costs, deadlines and the solution to environmental problems. The results show that industry professionals consider as “high” the level of difficulty to implement the addressed sustainability requirements, and that the Brazilian environmental legislation does not comply with its environmental protection role, increases the possibility of delays and costs of projects and services and hampers the emergence of solutions that could solve environmental problems.

Abstract: in this paper, we aimed to contextualize the gastronomic development and changes in spatial meanings, considering the tactics and strategies involved in this process. the everyday practices reconstruct continuously the culinary meanings and, in the case of the district of macacos, a city in the state of minas gerais, 30 km from belo horizonte, we observed that a mosaic of gastronomic offers reflects the everyday practices and projects certain identity of the district to tourists. macacos became a regional gastronomic pole or route at the end of twentieth century, but it has already developed a lot in this sector and counts on several restaurants of regional and international food. in this context, we wanted to know: how gastronomic strategies and tactics are built in macacos? in order to answer this question, we analyzed documents, the restaurants' menu and we interviewed the restaurants' owners and employees. by the end, we found out that polyphony was the strategy in all gastronomic activities in macacos. however, we observed a differentiation associated to the restaurant owners' origin: the entrepreneurs from macacos tended to work with regional food and the entrepreneurs from outside the district tended to work with what they classified as "international food". in the coexistence of typical and exotic, polyphony and pictoriality are relevant practices.
