Serological evidence of hantavirus infection in rural and urban regions in the state of Amazonas, Brazil
Gimaque, Jo?o Bosco Lima;Bastos, Michele de Souza;Braga, Wornei Silva Miranda;Oliveira, Cintia Mara Costa de;Castilho, Márcia da Costa;Figueiredo, Regina Maria Pinto de;Galusso, Elizabeth dos Santos;Itapirema, Evaulino Ferreira;Figueiredo, Luiz Tadeu Moraes de;Mour?o, Maria Paula Gomes;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762012000100019
Abstract: hantavirus disease is caused by the hantavirus, which is an rna virus belonging to the family bunyaviridae. hantavirus disease is an anthropozoonotic infection transmitted through the inhalation of aerosols from the excreta of hantavirus-infected rodents. in the county of itacoatiara in the state of amazonas (am), brazil, the first human cases of hantavirus pulmonary and cardiovascular syndrome were described in july 2004. these first cases were followed by two fatal cases, one in the municipality of maués in 2005 and another in itacoatiara in 2007. in this study, we investigated the antibody levels to hantavirus in a population of 1,731 individuals from four different counties of am. sera were tested by igg/igm- enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay using a recombinant nucleocapsid protein of the araraquara hantavirus as an antigen. ten sera were igg positive to hantavirus (0.6%). among the positive sera, 0.8% (1/122), 0.4% (1/256), 0.2% (1/556) and 0.9% (7/797) were from atalaia do norte, careiro castanho, itacoatiara and lábrea, respectively. none of the sera in this survey were igm-positive. because these counties are distributed in different areas of am, we can assume that infected individuals are found throughout the entire state, which suggests that hantavirus disease could be a local emerging health problem.
An Empirical Model for Dinitrogen Gas Emission from Inland Waters  [PDF]
Elizabeth Sikar, Marco Aurelio dos Santos, Ednaldo Oliveira dos Santos
Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (ACS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/acs.2019.91001
Abstract: The motivation to calculate this empirical model resulted from often observing—at the time disconcerting—excess dinitrogen gas (N2 concentration > background concentration) in bubble-gas emission samples, collected primarily for the purpose of carbon budget research, from Brazilian rivers and reservoirs sampled during roughly 100 field surveys lasting 4 days each on average and executed between years 2000 and 2012. We model the (serendipitously) measured dinitrogen gas above environmental concentration (N2aec) escaping in bubbles from Brazilian rivers as a function of dissolved nitrogen (N) in water. To this model, we mathematically add a pre-existing model of diffusively emitted denitrified dinitrogen (also as a function of dissolved N) from streams in the United States of America (USA). The resulting model predicts denitrified dinitrogen water-air emission from inland waters in the USA, China and Germany.

Oliveira, Miguel dos Santos de;Artmann, Elizabeth;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2009000300009
Abstract: this article presents the results of a study on the public health system's medical workforce in the province of cabinda, angola. the objective was to study the characteristics of medical personnel, seeking to help define strategies to expand access and improve quality of care. the study covered the period from 2001 to 2004 and used secondary data, semi-structured interviews with health professionals, direct observation, and comparison with the literature. quality of medical care in cabinda was low, with one physician per 3,356 inhabitants. there were communities with more than 35,000 inhabitants and not a single physician. working conditions were poor, and physicians suffered from low motivation. the study concluded that formulation and implementation of policies envisioning improvements in the management of medical professionals in the sector could help enhance the quality of care in the province, but it would require involvement by relevant actors and additional research on the other health professions.
Regionaliza??o dos servi?os de saúde: desafios para o caso de Angola
Oliveira, Miguel dos Santos de;Artmann, Elizabeth;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2009000400006
Abstract: this article presents the health situation in angola from 2000 to 2007, discussing regionalization of the health system as an important instrument for improving access and the use of health services in the country, besides highlighting the conditions and challenges for implementation. the article is based on a literature review of: (a) brazilian authors, considering that health reform is still under way in brazil, with extensive academic output on this particular theme, (b) african authors or studies on africa and international studies, considering the need to review regional and global experiences related to the subject, and (c) world health organization studies and guidelines on health decentralization and regionalization. the need for reform in the angolan health system has been demonstrated by the enormous structural and operational deficiencies, leading in turn to low effectiveness and reliability. regionalization was considered a key strategy for restructuring the health system. however, the evaluation of its impact will only be possible in the long term.

Suturas mecanicas
Duarte, Alexandre Miranda;Santos, Elizabeth Gomes dos;
Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912002000500010
Abstract: the authors review the use of staplers in general surgery, mainly in gastroenterological surgery highlighting safety and effectiveness. they emphasize that the mechanic anastomosis are a viable technique and in some conditions, the best way to perform the anastomosis. the use of staplers makes surgery faster and easier and complications are, generally related to surgeon's experience in using them. although its costs are higher compared to handsewn suture, it can make the patient total cost lower.
