Popularity, likeability, and risk-taking in middle adolescence  [PDF]
Stephanie Hawke, Elizabeth Rieger
Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.56A3007
Abstract:

This study investigated the roles of adolescent popularity and likeability in eight domains of risk-taking in Australian grade 9 students (53% girls). The eight domains included previously examined areas of aggressive behaviours, alcohol use, and sexual intercourse, and areas where there is scarce information, including antisocial activities, unprotected intercourse, body image-related risk-taking, unsafe road practices, and stranger-related risk-taking. The results indicated a clear association between popularity and higher risk-taking in five of the eight domains. This is contrasted with likeability, which was not directly related to risk-taking aside from one two-way interaction with gender for sexual intercourse. The findings demonstrate the importance of including a broader range of risk-taking activities when considering popularity, particularly stranger-related risk-taking.

Too Risk-Averse for Prospect Theory?  [PDF]
Marc Oliver Rieger, Thuy Bui
Modern Economy (ME) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/me.2011.24077
Abstract: We observe that the standard variant of Prospect Theory cannot describe very risk-averse choices in simple lotteries. This makes it difficult to accommodate it with experimental data. Using an exponential value function can solve this problem and allows to cover the whole spectrum of risk-averse behavior. Further evidence in favor of the exponential value function comes from the evaluation of data from a large scale survey on preferences over lotteries where the exponential value function produces the best fits. The results enhance the understanding on what types of lotteries pose potential problems for the classical value function.

Rieger A
Metodismo e império: os come os
Joerg Rieger
Caminhando , 2008,
Methodism and empire: the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
Joerg Rieger
Caminhando , 2009,
Abstract: Methodism and empire: the nineteenth and twentieth centuries This article investigates British and North American Methodism and their relations with their respective empires, and the ambivalence between adaptation and resistance. Empires are described as powerful manipulators of religion. However, they are not capable of totally assuming the power of religion. This "theological surplus" is a sign of hope.
Fast vectorized algorithm for the Monte Carlo Simulation of the Random Field Ising Model
H. Rieger
Physics , 1992, DOI: 10.1007/BF01053609
Abstract: An algoritm for the simulation of the 3--dimensional random field Ising model with a binary distribution of the random fields is presented. It uses multi-spin coding and simulates 64 physically different systems simultaneously. On one processor of a Cray YMP it reaches a speed of 184 Million spin updates per second. For smaller field strength we present a version of the algorithm that can perform 242 Million spin updates per second on the same machine.
Number of solutions of the TAP equations for p--spin interaction spin glasses
H. Rieger
Physics , 1992, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.46.14655
Abstract: The number $\langle N_s\rangle$ of solutions of the equations of Thouless, Anderson and Palmer for p--spin interaction spin glass models is calculated. Below a critical temperature $T_c$ this number becomes exponentially large, as it is in the SK--model ($p=2$). But in contrast to this, for any $p>2$ the factor $\alpha(T)=N^{-1} \ln\langle N_s\rangle$ jumps discontinuously at $T_c(p)$, which is consistent with the discontinuity occuring within the mean--field theory for these models. For zero temperature the results obtained by Gross and M\'ezard are reproduced, and for $p\rightarrow\infty$ one gets the result for the random energy model.
Ground state properties of fluxlines in a disordered environment
H. Rieger
Physics , 1998, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.81.4488
Abstract: A new numerical method to calculate exact ground states of multi-fluxline systems with quenched disorder is presented, which is based on the minimum cost flow algorithm from combinatorial optimization. We discuss several models that can be studied with this method including their specific implementations, physically relevant observables and results: 1) the N-line model with N fluxlines (or directed polymers) in a d-dimensional environment with point and/or columnar disorder and hard or soft core repulsion; 2) the vortex glass model for a disordered superconductor in the strong screening limit and 3) the Sine-Gordon model with random pase shifts in the strong coupling limit.
