Family Structure and Psychological Health in Young Adults  [PDF]

Abstract:

This study explored the effect of the gendered structure of siblings in intact and non-intact families, on family relations, social support, perceived control, and psychological distress in a sample of 708 young adults (294 males and 414 females) aged between 18 - 21 years. Of the sample 96 were singletons, 208 had both a brother and sister, 206 had a brother and no sister, and 198 had a sister and no brother. While the results show that both the gender of the participants and the gender of the sibling seem to impact on distress and its mediators; the more important factor is the gender of siblings. In essence the presence of a female sibling is associated with more perceived support, control and optimism, and with lower pessimism and psychological distress. The presence of a female is also associated with better family relations overall and it is suggested that the main mechanism for this positive impact of female siblings is through the lowered conflict and increased expressiveness and cohesion experienced in female versus male dominated sibling groups.

Abstract: Tarbela dam is one of the largest earth filled dam in the world. The sediments inflow in the Tarbela reservoir has resulted in reduction in water storage capacity. In addition damage to the tunnels, power generating units and ultimately to the plant equipment by the sediments particles carried by water is observed. To the authors knowledge, to-date no comprehensive simulation studies are performed for this dam reservoir and tunnels, especially at present when sediment delta and presence of sediment particles in the tunnels is observed to a reasonable extent. The aim of this study is to investigate the damage to the Tunnel 2 of the Tarbela Dam with and without considering the affect of sediment particles for one way and two way/full coupling during summer, winter and average seasons, using turbulent flows of water. Numerically calculated erosion results are compared with the experimental erosion results. Pressure, velocity and erosion rate density results are discussed in detail.

Abstract:

Automated performance tuning of data management systems offer various benefits such as improved performance, declined administration costs, and reduced workloads to database administrators (DBAs). Currently, DBAs tune the performance of database systems with a little help from the database servers. In this paper, we propose a new technique for automated performance tuning of data management systems. Firstly, we show how to use the periods of low workload time for performance improvements in the periods of high workload time. We demonstrate that extensions of a database system with materialised views and indices when a workload is low may contribute to better performance for a successive period of high workload. The paper proposes several online algorithms for continuous processing of estimated database workloads and for the discovery of the best plan for materialised view and index database extensions and of elimination of the extensions that are no longer needed. We present the results of experiments that show how the proposed automated performance tuning technique improves the overall performance of a data management system.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The ambulatory clinic was an important departmental problem. Providers hated working there and patients complained about the wait times there. It seemed there were equal numbers of patients and provider complaints. In the spirit of solving the problem, data was gathered, a LEAN intervention was planned, and data was collected. METHODS: We defined the service families in the clinic as registration, vital signs, provider or ultrasound visit, nursing visit, and registration for the return visit. We walked the Gemba engaging all the staff in the process. Many observations pointed to long waits between and among the five stations. In order to study the current state, time data was collected by attaching a sheet of paper to a folder that the patient would carry themselves to all the clinical steps. On the sheet of paper each station logged the time that patient appeared and the time the patient left their sight. Data was gathered each day and every day from October 2016 to the summer of 2017. The data was analyzed. Leadership met and identified value and waste in the process. A Kaizen event was scheduled after the first set of measurements engaging all the staff. After the data was thoroughly analyzed and digested, brainstorming occurred. Together we determined our future state. We created a vision and strategic goals to reach our future state. RESULTS: The data pre-Kaizen event showed that the process of arrival to leaving took 124 minutes. We discovered that not every patient passed through each station. We learned the patients were on time or early for their visit most of the time. The providers were late most of the time by 1 - 1.5 hours. We learned how long each station took from the patient’s point of view. There were no statistically significant differences between ultrasound and provider visits; there were no statistically significant differences between midwife and physician visits. Each day of the week was similar. The arrival rate was higher in the morning because of the template. After the event, the total time in clinic did not change however
Ants at Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary, Songkhla

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate diversity of ant at Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary, Hat Yai, Songkhla. Three line transects (100 m each) were randomly set up in 2 types of forest area, disturbed and undisturbed. Hand collecting (HC) and leaf litter sampling (LL) were applied for ant collection within a time limit of 30 minutes for each method. This study was carried out every month during Febuary 2002- Febuary 2003. The results showed that 206 species were placed under 8 subfamilies: Aenictinae, Cerapachyinae, Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, Leptanillinae, Myrmicinae, Ponerinae and Pseudomyrmecinae. Study sites and collection methods could divide ant species into 2 groups, whereas seasonal change could not distinguish the groups by DCA of multivariate analysis.
A New Round Robin Based Scheduling Algorithm for Operating Systems-Dynamic Quantum Using the Mean Average

Abstract: Round Robin, considered as the most widely adopted CPU scheduling algorithm, undergoes severe problems directly related to quantum size. If time quantum chosen is too large, the response time of the processes is considered too high. On the other hand, if this quantum is too small, it increases the overhead of the CPU. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, called AN, based on a new approach called dynamic-time-quantum; the idea of this approach is to make the operating systems adjusts the time quantum according to the burst time of the set of waiting processes in the ready queue. Based on the simulations and experiments, we show that the new proposed algorithm solves the fixed time quantum problem and increases the performance of Round Robin.
