On the presence of hepatic stellate cells in portal spaces

Abstract: previous studies in mice with hypervitaminosis a have demonstrated that fat-storing cells (hepatic stellate cells-hscs) participate in schistosomal granuloma fibrogenesis. the origin of such cells in portal areas, away from the disse spaces, was herein investigated. hscs were identified in frozen sections of the liver by means of sudan iii staining. they appeared as red-stained cells disposed along the sinusoids of normal mice, but were never found within portal spaces. however, in the chronically inflamed portal spaces of capillaria hepatica-infected mice, sudan iii-positive cells were frequently present among leukocytes and fibroblast-like cells. thus, there are no resident hscs in portal spaces, but their presence there in chronic inflammatory processes indicates that they are able to migrate from peri-sinusoidal areas in order to reach the portal areas.

Abstract: The insect control is carried out mostly by chemical products, whose cumulative effects cause serious losses to environmental and human health, highlighting rapid selection of resistant insects. Biological control by entomopathogenic bacteria is an efficient alternative, mainly due to high specificity, absence of resistance in the target insects and low environment residual effect. Bacillus thuringiensis is a Gram-positive spore-forming bacterium that produces a parasporal crystal protein toxic for many insect species. Despite the widespread use of B. thuringiensis based products in biological control of insects, there are little studies about its multiplication, sporulation and crystal production, as so many trade secrets information. This revision was aimed at gathering general information about B. thuringiensis, as well as its production in culture media. O controle de insetos é realizado, em sua maioria, por produtos químicos; cujos efeitos cumulativos ocasionam grandes prejuízos ambientais e à saúde humana, destacando-se ainda a rápida sele o de insetos resistentes. O controle biológico por entomopatógenos é uma alternativa eficiente, principalmente devido a sua alta especificidade, ausência de resistência nos insetos alvos e baixo efeito residual no ambiente. Bacillus thuringiensis é uma bactéria Gram-positiva esporulante, produtora de cristais protéicos com atividade inseticida. Apesar do amplo uso B. thuringiensis no controle biológico, há poucos trabalhos publicados quanto a sua multiplica o, esporula o e produ o de cristais, visto que muitas informa es s o segredos industriais. Esta revis o teve por objetivo reunir informa es gerais sobre B. thuringiensis, bem como quanto sua produ o em meios de cultivo.

Abstract: although invasive species are one of the main reasons for the loss of biodiversity, in brazil there is little information about biological invasions in terrestrial ecosystems. sandy coastal plain forests (restinga) and shrubby vegetation are places extremely susceptible to this kind of threat. the goal of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of the exotic species calotropis procera in the restinga do xexé, farol de s?o tomé, campos dos goytacazes, rj, brazil. a survey covering an area of 126 ha (1400 m x 900 m) was carried out, where a total of 475 individuals were sampled (mean of 3.8 indiv.ha-1). to assess the spatial distribution and population structure of this species, three transects (300 m x 10 m) were created, which were perpendicular to the vegetation gradient from interior to shoreline, and all individuals of c. procera were sampled. a total of 28 individuals > 50 cm tall were sampled, and no individuals < 50 cm tall were found in the three transects. the plants were restricted to areas with vestiges of human disturbance. the absence of seedling samples within the transects is probably related to the fast growth of this species after germination. the results showed that c. procera has a great potential of invading disturbed areas in restinga vegetation. a plan to control and eradicate this species should be considered by the brazilian environmental agency.

Abstract: Results of photoluminescence measurements for natural and synthetic alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr3+) are presented, where the samples are excited by the 488 nm line of an Ar+ laser, at different temperatures. The main issue is the analysis of the Cr3+ transition in the chrysoberyl matrix (BeAl2O4), with major technological application as active media for laser action. Results indicate anomalous behavior of Cr33+ transition depending on the measurement temperature. A simple model to explain the phenomena is suggested.

Abstract: purpose: remaining functionally active within a specific social context seems to be one of the hardest challenges faced by our society. the purpose of this paper is to study the epidemiological profiles of people with functional kinetic alterations as noted by key informants living in caxias do sul, rio grande do sul state, brazil, considering social, economic and cultural characteristics, as well as family/individual profiles and healthcare aspects, linked to functional capacities. methodology: this research project included an observational descriptive study. the population studied consisted of people suffering from functional kinetic alterations noted by from key informants, known as chapel-keepers. the tools used were: questionnaires addressed to the chapel-keepers, structured interviews and a barthel index rating for the functionally challenged. findings: only 21.9% of the population under study is being treated through physiotherapy. the use of key informants is a feasible alternative for helping the functional diagnosis of this population group. the characteristics of the population under study indicate the absence of physiotherapy and the need for effective programs addressing this problem.

Abstract: The investigation of electrical properties in alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr3+) in synthetic and natural forms is presented in this paper. Alexandrite is a rare and precious mineral that changes color according to the light incident on it. In the synthetic form, it is used technologically as an active laser medium. The electrical characterization was obtained using the Thermally Stimulated Depolarization Current (TSDC) technique, an interesting tool to study the behavior of impurities in insulators. Alexandrite presented the electric dipole relaxation phenomenon, both in natural and in synthetic samples. It was possible to observe TSDC bands for the synthetic sample at around 170 K, and at around 175 K for the natural sample. Besides, photo-induced TSDC measurements were performed through the excitement of the samples by using a continuous wave argon laser. In addition, photoluminescence measurements were performed to verify in advance whether the laser light would be absorbed by the sample, and in order to complement the photo-induced TSDC measurements analysis. The results of photo-induced TSDC experiments have contributed to the understanding of the TSDC bands behavior: the results obtained with the technique suggest that there is an effective participation of Cr3+ ions in the formation of TSDC bands because they were more intense when the sample was exposed to the argon laser beam.

Abstract: this article presents the results of a study of the type before and after training in shelter with risk classification compared to the humanization of social representations of health among 111 health professionals in an emergency hospital. data collection was performed using the technique of free evocation and analysis was done using the evoc software. the results showed changes in the symbolic meaning attributed to terms inducers towards incorporation of the right perspective in the representation of the unified health system, the translation of humanization in health as shelter, and the progression of understanding the shelter, the humanistic focus to the qualification of processes of care of the users demand at emergencies. the results indicate that the differences found in the core before and after training were due to an apprenticeship, which based in peripheral elements, was able to question the core elements and interchange between the central and peripheral system, recognizing the functional complementarity between these two systems and the relationships between representations and practices. however, the method does not assert the persistence of such changes in the social representations of the objects studied in depth or measure the changes in daily practices.
Karyotype characterization of Trigona fulviventris Guérin, 1835 (Hymenoptera, Meliponini) by C banding and fluorochrome staining: report of a new chromosome number in the genus

Abstract: Although many species of the genus Trigona have been taxonomically described, cytogenetic studies of these species are still rare. The aim of the present study was to obtain cytogenetic data by conventional staining, C banding and fluorochrome staining for the karyotype characterization of the species Trigona fulviventris. Cytogenetic analysis revealed that this species possesses a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 32, different from most other species of this genus studied so far. This variation was probably due to the centric fusion in a higher numbered ancestral karyotype, this fusion producing the large metacentric chromosome pair and the lower chromosome number observed in Trigona fulviventris. Heterochromatin was detected in the pericentromeric region of the first chromosome pair and in one of the arms of the remaining pairs. Base-specific fluorochrome staining with 4'-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) showed that the heterochromatin was rich in AT base pairs (DAPI+) except for pair 13, which was chromomycin A3 (CMA3) positive indicating an excess of GC base pairs. Our data also suggests that there was variation in heterochromatin base composition.
Characterization of dissolved organic matter in the Piauí river estuary, Northeast Brazil

Abstract: fluorescence spectroscopy and dissolved organic carbon (doc) measurements were used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (dom) in the piauí river estuary, a tropical estuary situated in the state of sergipe, northeast brazil. fluorescence intensities were greater during the rainy period than the dry period, demonstrating that variability in the fluorescence properties of the dom was determined mainly by the fluvial discharge and the dilution processes occurring in the estuary. during the rainy period, tryptophan-like and humic substances were the main components of the dom, while during the dry period there was a significant increase of protein-like constituents. relationships identified between fluorescence intensities and salinity were indicative of non-conservative behavior of the fluorescent dom. doc showed behavior that was conservative during the dry period, and non-conservative during the rainy period, with production of doc in the upper reaches of the estuary. the complexation of dom with cu(ii), studied using the fluorescence suppression technique, showed the complexation potentials of protein, tryptophan and humic type fluorophores.
