Abstract: since the popularity of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables has increased lately, due to the convenience and quality aspects, chemical modifications were investigated, in addition to sensory and microbiological aspects of fresh-cut the 'tommy atkins' mangoes were treated with 1% citric acid, 1% ascorbic acid and 1% calcium chloride stored under active modified atmospheres (5% o2 + 5% co2) and refrigerated for 12 days. the following analyses were done: titratable acidity, ph, total soluble solids, total soluble sugars, c vitamin, sensory analysis (taste) and microbiological analyses (filamentous fungus and yeast counting and coliforms at 35 e 45oc). it was concluded that the treatments with 1% citric acid, 1% ascorbic acid and 1% cacl2 didn't influence the shelf-life of the fresh-cut 'tommy atkins' mangoes. according to the sensory and microbiological analyses the useful life is 12 days at 5oc.
Measurement of airborne 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs nuclides due to the Fukushima reactors accident in air particulate in Milan (Italy)

Abstract: After the earthquake and the tsunami occurred in Japan on 11th March 2011, four of the Fukushima reactors had released in air a large amount of radioactive isotopes that had been diffused all over the world. The presence of airborne 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs in air particulate due to this accident has been detected and measured in the Low Radioactivity Laboratory operating in the Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of Milano-Bicocca. The sensitivity of the detecting apparatus is of 0.2 \mu Bq/m3 of air. Concentration and time distribution of these radionuclides were determined and some correlations with the original reactor releases were found. Radioactive contaminations ranging from a few to 400 \mu Bq/m3 for the 131I and of a few tens of \mu Bq/m3 for the 137Cs and 134Cs have been detected

Abstract: It was aimed in this work to evaluate the effect of different antioxidants on preventing browning during the storageof fresh-cut peruvian carrot. The roots of the cv. Amarela de Senador Amaral were screened, washed, sanitized,peeled and sliced. The sanitized slices were immersed into the following treatments: control (distilled water), 0.5%cysteine, 1% ascorbic acid, 0.5% cysteine + 1% ascorbic acid. Following, they were packed and stored (5 ± 1oCand 98% RH) for 15 days. Samples were analyzed every 3 days. The experimental design was completelyrandomized in a factorial 4 x 6, namely 4 chemical treatments (control, solution of 0.5% cysteine, solution of 1%ascorbic acid and solution of 1% ascorbic acid + 0.5% cysteine) and 6 periods of storage (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15days), with 3 replicates and the results were analyzed statistically. The fresh-cut peruvian carrot cultivar Amarelade Senador Amaral presented better quality when treated with the antioxidant ascorbic acid 1%, which determineda product with higher values b* , lower values a*, and higher activity of phenylalanine ammonia lyase.
Maintenance of the microbiological quality of minimally processed watermelon

Abstract: Amongst the alterations that occour in fresh-cut products, the appearance of microorganisms from inadequatehandling and contact with equipments, surfaces utensils is noticed as something that increases the risk ofcontamination for consumers. The objective of this work was to evaluate the sanitizers sodium hypochlorite,hydrogen peroxide and sodium dichloro isocyanurate. The watermelons were chosen. Washed and through thefollowing treatments: control (with no sanitizer), sodium hypochlorite (25, 50 and 100 mg. L-1, for ten minutes), andsodium dichloro isocyanurate (50, 100 and 200 mg. L -1 for 10 minutes). After sanitization, the fruits were slidelengthwise in four parts and spheres were removed by the use of a fruit scoop. The spheres were drained for theremoval of excess liquid, packed and stored in cold room (5 ± 1°C and 90 ±5% of UR) for ten days. The analysesperformed every other day were pH, tiratable acidity, soluble solids, coliform determination, search for Salmonellaand counting of fungi and yeasts. The obtained results showed that there was no significant difference among thetreatments for the pH, titratable acidity and soluble solids variables. The presence of coliforms at 45°C, Salmonella,fungi and yeasts were not detected during storage of the watermelon spheres in any treatment. The obtained resultsenabled to conclude that the adoption of good manufacture practices is good enough to assure the safety of freshcutwatermelon.

Abstract: The methods and tools used to determine the history of construction and building techniques of the castle of Sorrivoli (Roncofreddo - FC) are here described. This is a research project carried out within a study coordinated by the teaching of Medieval Archaeology (University of Bologna), which has the purpose of conducting a census of all the medieval castles in Romagna. There is certain news from the tenth century concerning the castle to be studied. However, the investigations have shown that the standing preserved structures must be dated from the fourteenth century onwards. The system of photogrammetric survey of the walls and the technique of threedimensional modelling of the structures are here described. An extended part of this paper is also devoted to results of stratigraphic, typological, geological, metrological and comparative mensio-cronological analysis. No disponible

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe methods of documentation and detection techniques used on the archaeological site of Mursia (Pantelleria, TP) in order to build three-dimensional models of a hut and a stone mortar. The software measures three-dimensional coordinates of a finite set of points on the object using two photographs taken from different positions (stereo pairs). In particular, we explore some technical aspects of data processing like quickness, measurement accuracy, information content of record and equipments cost. In questo contributo si descrivono i metodi e gli strumenti di rilievo impiegati nel sito archeologico di Mursia (Pantelleria – TP) per ottenere i modelli tridimensionali di una capanna e di un mortaio litico. Il software misura sull’oggetto le coordinate tridimensionali di un set finito di punti utilizzando due foto riprese da posizioni differenti (“stereocoppia”). Si approfondiscono, in particolare, alcuni aspetti di questa tecnica di rilievo: la rapidità (del procedimento), l’accuratezza (della misura), il contenuto informativo (della registrazione) e il costo (degli strumenti).
Nonsingular Promises from Born-Infeld Gravity

Abstract: Born-Infeld determinantal gravity formulated in Weitzenbock spacetime is discussed in the context of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmologies. It is shown how the standard model big bang singularity is absent in certain spatially flat FRW spacetimes, where the high energy regime is characterized by a de Sitter inflationary stage of geometrical character, i.e., without the presence of the inflaton field. This taming of the initial singularity is also achieved for some spatially curved FRW manifolds where the singularity is replaced by a de Sitter stage or a big bounce of the scale factor depending on certain combinations of free parameters appearing in the action. Unlike other Born-Infeld-like theories in vogue, the one here presented is also capable of deforming vacuum general relativistic solutions.

Abstract: The top-quark is a fundamental element of the physics program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We review the current status of the top-quark measurements performed by ATLAS and CMS experiments in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV by presenting the recent results of the top-quark production rates, top mass measurements and additional top quark properties. We will also describe the recent searches for physics beyond the Standard Model in the top-quark sector.

Abstract: the goal of this work was to evaluate the effect of the type of cut the on maintenance quality of fresh-cut 'menina brasileira' summer squash stored under refrigeration. summer squashes were sliced or grated and sanitized with sodium hypochloride solution at 50 mg l-1 for 10 minutes. they were placed in polypropylene packages covered with pvc film (0.020 mm), and stored in cold chamber (6oc and 95% rh) for 12 days. the following variables were evaluated: fresh mass loss, ph, soluble solids (ss), l*, c* and h° values, appearance and color. the experiment was carried out in completely random design in factorial scheme (2x5), with two types of cut (sliced e grated) and five times of storage (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days). the fresh mass loss was low, attaining maximal values of 1.5% in grated summer squash. the values of ph in grated summer squashes were lower than in sliced summer squashes from 6th day. grated summer squashes presented lower ss content than sliced summer squashes, after 3rd day of storage. higher l* values were found in sliced summer squashes and an increase in that variable was observed during the storage. sliced summer squash presented lower color losses, based to h° and c* values, and better sensorial acceptability in relation to grated one, with reduction in their scores over the storage period. it was the cut type wich influences the shelf-life of sliced and grated summer squashes, keeping their appearance and physical-chemical characteristics until the 12th day of storage.

Abstract: Within the field of Applied Linguistics there are broad discussions about the use of translation in Foreign Language (FL) classrooms. Several factors have influenced in the negative stigma regarding translation in classroom. Language institutes and basic schools condemn the use of translation in their classes and teachers feel guilty when occasionally resorting to this method, acting like they’re doing a crime. With this article, I intend to: I. Provide a brief historical profile of the use of translation in the FL classroom, citing the methodological factors that drove the use of mother tongue in class to a negative status; II. Try to show FL teachers that the use of translation in the classroom is a useful tool in teaching a FL; and, therefore, III. Try to avoid teachers’ feelings of guilt regarding the use of translation in the FL classroom, even when they do so in a non-systematic way. Dentro do campo da Linguística Aplicada ocorrem amplos debates sobre o uso da tradu o em sala de aula de Línguas Estrangeiras (LE). Diversos fatores influenciaram no estigma concernente à prática da tradu o em sala de aula. Institutos de idiomas e escolas regulares condenam o uso da tradu o em suas aulas e os professores sentem-se culpados por terem de recorrer a tal método vez ou outra, agindo como se estivessem praticando um crime. Com esse artigo, pretendo: I. Tra ar um breve perfil histórico do uso da tradu o em sala de aula de LE, citando metodologicamente os fatores que impulsionaram o status negativo concernente ao uso da tradu o em sala de aula; II. Tentar mostrar aos professores de LE que o uso da tradu o em sala de aula é uma ferramenta útil no ensino de LE; e, consequentemente, III. Tentar eximir professores do sentimento de culpa em rela o ao uso da tradu o em sala de aula de LE, mesmo quando o fazem de maneira n o sistemática.
