Brazilian Journal of Botany , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84042003000400005
Abstract: with the aim of recognising useful features for taxonomic purposes, we studied the leaf anatomy of 25 taxa that are morphologically related (13 of aechmea subgenus lamprococcus, three of ronnbergia e. morren & andré, four of araeococcus brongn. and five of lymania read). although all leaves are hypostomatic and have a dorsiventral mesophyll with a hypodermis, they show some features that characterise each species. these features include, the stomata position on leaf surface, the presence or absence of substomatic occlusions, the occurrence or not of fibre clusters in the mesophyll, the nature of the cell walls of the vascular bundle sheaths and the cell morphology of the diaphragm that interrupt the air channels. by associating these characters we have elaborated an identification key for the studied taxa, based on the leaf structure.

Brazilian Journal of Botany , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-84042004000100006
Abstract: with the objective of recognizing vegetative helpfull characteristics in the myrtaceae identification, we studied the leaf anatomy of 17 species of eugenia, from the bank of tibagi river, state of paraná. using leaf blade venation and, the pattern of the petiole vascular bundle sheaths we separated the species in three different groups. the camptodromous-brochidodromous venation pattern occur in nine species, the acrodromous pattern in four species, and a mixed pattern in four species. depending on the species, the petiole vascular bundle sheaths can be of parenchymatous, sclerenchymatous or mixed nature. a dicotomic identification key was elaborated with these vegetative characters showing that they can surely aid in the eugenia species identification.
Financial Development, Export and Economic Growth in Nigeria  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2017.77153
Abstract: This paper examines the relationship among Financial Development, Export and Economic growth in Nigeria. The ADF and PP test are used in checking the order of integration of the variables and Johasen co-integration methodology is employed to investigate the long run relationship among the variables. Time series data were collected between 1994 and 2013. The direction of causality between variables is tested by Granger causality test and Ordinary least square (OLS). Econometric techniques were used to estimate the model. Evidence from the study found that exports and transportation development has a positive significant effect and influence in economic growth. While financial development, international trade structure and energy sector has a negative effect on economic growth. The study recommends that government should continue to intensify its efforts in promoting confidence of the public on such sectors, transform energy sectors through adequate and effective regulation and supervision; the reforms in the financial sector should be sustained so as to be able to channel more resources for investment and productive purposes.
Effect of Land Preparation and Weeding Regime on the Yield of Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Mubi, Adamawa State

Journal of Agronomy , 2011,
Abstract: Sweet pepper farmers do not seem to give the desired attention to the manner in which they prepare their lands. An experiment to determine the effects of land preparation and weeding regime on the yield sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was conducted in Mubi, Nigeria during the 2008 and 2009 rainy seasons. The experiments were laid out in a split plot design with land preparation (zero tilled, Ploughed, Ploughed and Harrowed and Raised beds) assigned to the main plot. Weeding regimes at: No weeding, 2WAT (Weeks After Transplanting), 2 and 4 WAT and 2, 4 and 6WAT were assigned to the sub plots. Data were collected on yield characters such number of fruits per plot, number of fruits peer plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, yield per plot and yield per hectare. Results obtained from the experiments shows that a Land preparation was significant (p<0.05) for days to first flowering and fruit length. A significant (p<0.05) effect was also shown by land preparation yield per plot, yield per hectare, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruits per plant, total number of fruits per plot, fruit yield per plot and yield per hectare. The weeded three times at 2, 4 and 6WAT made a significant impact in all the yield characters studied. The raised bed method of land preparation and weeding three times at 2, 4 and 6 WAT was therefore recommended for optimum pepper yield in the study area.
Recommended Fertilizer Levels on Bambara Groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L) Verde) in Yola Adamawa State, Nigeria

Agricultural Journal , 2013,
Abstract: Research was conducted during the 2002, 2003 and 2004 cropping seasons at the Federal College of education Teaching and Research Farm. The experiments were located within latitude 9019’N and longitude 12030’E, at an altitude of 185.9 m above sea level. The research was conducted on 2 cultivars of bambara groundnuts Vigna subterranean (L) Verde), cream and variegated with the aim to determine the recommended fertilizer levels on bambara groundnut in Yola Adamawa State, Nigeria. Soil samples were collected at different spots within the experimental sites before and after harvesting every year by throwing a quadrant and collecting 0-15 cm depth of soils, which was subjected to Laboratory analysis. Four levels of single super phosphate fertilizer at 0, 30, 60 and 90 Kg ha-1 of P2O5 coded L1, L2, L3 and L4 were used. Establishment counts and growth parameters on number of plants/stand, plants heights and leaves numbers, fresh and dry weights of the crop, root length, nodules number and yield in kg ha-1 as affected by P2O5 levels were determined. During the three years of experimentation, it was observed that fertilizer application at the rate of 60 kg ha-1 of P2O5 gave the highest yield of 432.5 kg ha-1, even though the fertilizer level at 90 kg ha-1 gave higher yield in some treatments, it was found not to be economically profitable. Therefore, based on the results the fertilizer level of 60 kg ha-1 of P2O5 is recommended for bambara groundnut in Yola, Adamawa State Nigeria.
Agronomic Performance of Selected Cultivars of Pearl Millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.R.Br.) and their Hybrids in North-Eastern Nigeria

Journal of Agronomy , 2007,
Abstract: Field experiments were carried out simultaneously during the rainy season of 2004 and 2005 at the Faculty of Agriculture Research Farm, University of Maiduguri and School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, Federal University of Technology, Yola Nigeria. The study evaluated the agronomic performance of pearl millet lines and their hybrids. The experiments consisted of 10 pearl millet lines and their 45 hybrids laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed significant difference among the population of pearl millet evaluated. Differences were also statistically significant in years and locations for all the characters studied, implying that variation existed in years and locations of the study, confirming the difference existing in the two locations, which could be as result of differential rainfall pattern and soil type. The high level of variability existing among a particular population is desirable, because the amount of improvement that could be obtained by selection in crop plants is dependent on it. The mean performance of the parental lines and their hybrids relatively showed distinct agronomic superiority in most of the characters over others. The study recommends ACC-1022-1-2SPT, BONKOK-SHORT and IMV11-3-3 SPT as potentially early maturing lines. The study also recommends the hybrids, LCIC9702xLCIC9703-27, IMV11-3-3SPTxLCIC9702 and BONKOK-SHORTxIMV11-3-3SPT as potentially early maturing and suitable for regions with marginal rainfall, especially northeastern Nigeria. The study further recommends, the parental lines ACC-1022-2SPT, SOSAT-C88 and the hybrids, DMR22xLCIC9702 and DMR43xLCIC9702 for high production of total grain yield. These superior performing parental lines and their hybrids can be subjected to further selection for improved pearl millet crop in a breeding program.
