Abstract: one way to incorporate the uncertainty of field data and the spatial variability in the hydraulic properties of aquifers is to prescribe probability distributions to the material properties of the medium. the statistical properties of the hydraulic potential are then determined by the numerical solution of stochastic differential equations governing the flow in the aquifer. for this purpose we consider two stochastic finite element methods, monte carlo and stochastic collocation, to estimate the mean and variance of the potential for saturated flow in statistically heterogeneous media, assuming that the coefficient of hydraulic transmissibility follows a lognormal distribution. one of the crucial issues in the accuracy of numerical methods is the spatial correlation length associated with the transmissibility. we also discuss some configurations of plant extraction that were recently proposed for a rational exploration of the rec?ncavo aquifer in the capivara river basin (bahia, brazil), by comparing two classical models and by introducing the randomness of transmissibility in one of these configurations.

Abstract: lectins, carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immune origin, that agglutinate cells or precipitate polysaccharides and glycoconjugates, are well distributed in nature, mainly in the plant kingdom. the great majority of the plante lectins are present in seed cotyledons where they are found in the cytoplasm or int he protein bodies, although they have also been found in roots, stems and leaves. due to their peculiar properties, the lectins are used as a tool both for analytical and preparative purposes in biochemistry, cellular biology, immunology and related areas. in agriculture and medicine the use of lectins greatly improved in the last few years. the lextins, with few exceptions, are glycoproteins, need divalent cations to display full activity and are, in general, oligomers with variable molecular weight. although the studies on lectins have completed a century, their role in nature is yet ynknown . several hypotheses on their physiological functions have been suggested. thus, lectins could play important roles in defense against pathogens, plant-microorganism symbiosis, cell organization, embryo morphogenesis, phagocytosis, cell wall elongation, pollen recognition and as reserve proteins. a brief review on the general properties and roles of the lectins is given.

Abstract: The survival of patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) is related to the prevention and effective treatment of opportunistic infections. It is known that the main parameters to evaluate the progression of disease caused by HIV-1 is the counting of CD4 + T cells and viral load of HIV-1. Regulatory T cells has been considered the focus of intense research within the immune system as well as in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Natural regulatory T cells (Tregs) CD4+CD25+ act in the modulation of immune activation, functioning as critical mediators of immune homeostasis and self-tolerance. Furthermore, recent studies has shown that the function of Tregs cells is not limited to the prevention of autoimmunity, but is also important to control all forms of immune responses in the context of inflammation, infection, allergy, transplantation and tumor immunity. Many authors have identified Tregs as beneficial effector cells in the context of AIDS, but other researchers disagree. Tregs can exert an important role in the immunopathology of HIV infection due to the suppressor activity on cellular activation and effector function. Thus, this review discusses the molecular and immunological aspects of Tregs in the HIV system.

It was evaluated biomass production and morphogenetic of Brachiaria decumbens monocrop and fertilized with nitrogen chemical fertilizers or intercropped with Stylosanthes guianensis or Calopogonium muconoides. The design was a randomized with five treatments (Brachiaria decumbens unfertilized, fertilized with 50 and 100kg/ha of nitrogen, and intercropped with legumes Stylosanthes guianensis or Calopogonium muconoides) with three replicate. Line spacing of 0.4m was used for intercropped plots and legumes were sown between rows of signal grass. Significant differences among treatments for yield traits total dry mass, leaf dry mass and dry mass of stems, and Brachiaria decumbens fertilized with 100kg/ha of nitrogen and associated with Stylosanthes guianensis were the holders of higher means. There was no significant difference for the characteristic leaf elongation rate, stem elongation and tiller number of plants of signal grass fertilized with 50 and 100kg of nitrogen and signal grass in intercropped with Stylosanthes guianensis. Abstract: the purpose of this study was to select effective arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (amf) on the production of yellow passionflower seedlings. the variables considered were: sterile substrates, fertility levels, and organic matter addition. three greenhouse experiments were conducted using different mixtures as substrates: 2:1:1 - sand, soil and dairy manure, 1:1 - sand and soil , and 9:1 - soil and dairy manure. the amf used at the two first experiments were: acaulospora sp. (iac-13), gigaspora margarita, glomus sp. (iac-27), acaulospora morrowae, acaulospora sp. (iac-44), acaulospora scrobiculata, scutellospora heterogama, glomus clarum, glomus sp. (iac-28), entrophospora colombiana, glomus etunicatum and glomus macrocarpum. in the third experiment, the following amf were used: g. clarum, glomus sp. (iac-28), g. margarita, g. etunicatum and g. macrocarpum (iac-50), a mixture of these fungal species and indigenous amf populations obtained from a passionflower field cropping, which were multiplied in brachiaria decumbens, passionflower and peanut. the highest mycorrhizal benefits were obtained in the substrate with no organic matter addition, which, however, did not surpass the positive effect of organic matter on plant growth. the most efficient fungi were g. clarum, g. etunicatum and g. margarita. in the substrate with organic matter addition (25 g.kg-1), acaulospora sp. (iac- 44) and a. morrowae were efficient to promote plant growth, while g. clarum had a parasitic effect. plants colonized by glomus sp. (iac- 28) had higher growth in the substrate with 10 g.kg-1 of dairy manure added to the soil, which was comparable to the effect of those efficient fungi in the substrate with the highest organic matter addition.

Abstract: emotion can be functionally considered as action dispositions preparing the organism for either avoidance- or approach- related behaviors. in order to prepare an appropriate behavioral output, the organism has to be efficient in the encoding of relevant stimuli. we herein present evidence from neuroimaging studies that seeing emotional and arousing pictures leads to greater activation in visual cortex than seeing neutral ones. in addition to this facilitation of sensory processing, emotional stimuli prompt somatic and vegetative reactions. recordings of postural oscillations and heart rate while participants visualized a block of unpleasant pictures, revealed a significant reduction of body sway and bradycardia. a parallel investigation showed that reaction time also slows down after the visualization of negative pictures. taken together, immobility, bradycardia and slower reaction time in the laboratory experimental set may reflect the engagement of the defensive system, resembling the defensive reactions to distant threatening stimuli in natural contexts. in summary, the affective system operates at an early level of sensory encoding and at the motor output favoring dispositions for appropriate actions.
