Abstract: we described the reproductive behavior of the small south american cichlid laetacara araguaiae in streams from brazil. we predicted that this species will show reproductive cooperation and division of labor between males and females in a similar way presented by other substrate-spawner cichlids. thus, we studied 34 pairs in the pre-spawning (n = 11), egg/wriggler (n = 11) and fry (n = 12) phases. in the pre-spawning phase both sexes become involved in nest building and territorial defense, but females emphasizes building nest (p = 0.03), while males invest more time in territorial defense (p = 0.04). after spawning, male and female alternate between rearing eggs and defending nest in the territory. in the egg/wriggler phase females devotes more time rearing the brood while males remain defending territory (p = 0.02). these differences disappear when young are in the fry stage, and parents jointly stay closer to fry (p = 0.98). however, at this phase, there is a reduction in the frequency of threats shown by males (p<0.01) and an increase in the frequency of attacks shown by female (p<0.01) that could be a response to an increased demand for parental defense. our results indicate that the reproductive cooperation between males and females of l. araguaiae is marked by division of labor in the early reproductive phases and by sharing of parental duties as brood develops.

Abstract: we discuss the main problems which make a scientific text difficult to find, to be read or to be accepted by readers. a scientific text is considered a logical argument. therefore, methods, results and data from literature are premises supporting the conclusions of the work; and in the "introduction" session, the justification corroborates the objective of the study. this conception makes the text a hermetically coherent structure where only the necessary data should be included (some controversy is still pertinent). in a second step, we show formal mistakes in scientific writing which make texts less attractive. thus, we give examples of errors or inadequacy of formal aspects of presenting titles, abstracts, results (figures and tables), and grammar mistakes in portuguese (but also valid for english grammar). after that, we emphasize the need for writing in international language (english) and for publication in periodicals with international impact on the scientific community. finally, considerations to improve the brazilian periodicals in the biological area are presented.

Abstract: this study evaluated the influence of smoking on respiratory muscle strength (maximal inspiratory and maximal expiratory pressures) in physically independent elderly compared to nonsmokers. we selected 120 aged people equal or above 60 years-old divided into two groups, according to the world health organization criteria: smokers group, including 106 individuals, and nonsmokers group, with 14. a structured questionnaire was applied to collect demographic data. for respiratory muscle strength evaluation, a gerar? analog manovacuometer with a range of -300 to +300 cmh2o was used. student's t-test was used to evaluate the difference between means, and pearson's correlation coefficient (r2) to analyze associations. the smokers group presented lower maximum inspiratory pressure with a significant difference (p<0.0001). there was no significant difference in the maximum expiratory pressure. it was observed that the body mass index was also significantly lower in smokers (p<0.0001), however no positive correlation with inspiratory muscle strength was found. these results suggest that smoking is related with reduction of the inspiratory muscle strength, and that although it does not present a positive correlation with such decreased muscle strength, body mass index was also reduced in such individuals.

Abstract: we tested the effect of nest deprivation on the mating success and sexual selection of dominant nile tilapia males in two treatments, consisting of two males and three females kept on aquarium with or without nesting substrate (ins: with substrate inside, n = 9; nos: non-substrate inside, n = 11). other male traits potentially affecting mating success, such as aggressiveness level, courtship investment, and condition factor were also analyzed. the dominant male's behavior was video-recorded in four 20-min sessions: 1, 4, 7, and 10 days after grouping. latency to spawn and spawning frequency were similar in ws and ns groups, showing the same mating success among dominant males on the presence or absence of gravel. nest investment was the main factor related to female choice in ins groups, but none of the other variables improved mating success in nos. although nesting is related to sexual selection in nile tilapia, gravel substrate deprivation from which they construct a nest does not affect mating success. this finding may explain the reproductive success of the species in a wide range of environments and aquaculture systems.

Abstract: objective: to analyze the impact on human health of exposure to particulate matter emitted from burnings in the brazilian amazon region. methods: this was an ecological study using an environmental exposure indicator presented as the percentage of annual hours (ah%) of pm2.5 above 80 μg/m3. the outcome variables were the rates of hospitalization due to respiratory disease among children, the elderly and the intermediate age group, and due to childbirth. data were obtained from the national space research institute and the ministry of health for all of the microregions of the brazilian amazon region, for the years 2004 and 2005. multiple regression models for the outcome variables in relation to the predictive variable ah% of pm2.5 above 80 μg/m3 were analyzed. the human development index (hdi) and mean number of complete blood counts per 100 inhabitants in the brazilian amazon region were the control variables in the regression analyses. results: the association of the exposure indicator (ah%) was higher for the elderly than for other age groups (β = 0.10). for each 1% increase in the exposure indicator there was an increase of 8% in child hospitalization, 10% in hospitalization of the elderly, and 5% for the intermediate age group, even after controlling for hdi and mean number of complete blood counts. no association was found between the ah% and hospitalization due to childbirth. conclusions: the indicator of atmospheric pollution showed an association with occurrences of respiratory diseases in the brazilian amazon region, especially in the more vulnerable age groups. this indicator may be used to assess the effects of forest burning on human health.
