Revista Brasileira de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-72032012000100007
Abstract: purpose: to compare the maternal and perinatal outcomes of patients with placenta previa, after the adoption of a prolonged maternal hospital stay, to those of a 1991 series. methods: we performed a retrospective study comparing 108 cases of placenta previa hospitalized in the maternity school assis chateaubriand, universidade federal do ceará, during the period from 01/01/2006 to 12/31/2010, with those obtained in 1991, when 101 cases of the pathology were observed at our institution. the following maternal and perinatal data were collected: maternal age, parity, gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery, maternal stay length, apgar scores at the 1st and 5th minutes, birth weight, adequacy of birth weight, neonatal length stay, maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates (maternal, fetal, neonatal and perinatal). statistical analysis was performed using the χ2 and fisher's exact tests. the results were considered significant when p<0.05. results: in 1991, placenta previa was found in 1.13% of cases (101/8900). in the present study, the prevalence was 0.43% (108/24726). no maternal death was observed in either series. regarding the study of 1991, the current patients were significantly younger, with lower parity, were hospitalized longer, had better apgar scores at 1st and 5th minutes, and had longer neonatal hospitalization. also, we identified reduction of fetal, neonatal and perinatal mortality. conclusions: perinatal outcomes in patients with placenta previa were significantly improved between 1991 and the years 2006 and 2010. however, we can not say whether this improvement was due to the prolonged maternal hospital stay.
INCêNDIOS FLORESTAIS NO PARQUE NACIONAL DA SERRA DA CANASTRA: DESAFIOS PARA A CONSERVA O DA BIODIVERSIDADE

Strategic Fast Supply Demand-Chains in a Network Context: Opportunistic Practices That Can Destroy Supply Chain Systems  [PDF]
José Crespo de Carvalho, Ana Lúcia Martins, Tania Ramos, Eurico Brilhante Dias
American Journal of Industrial and Business Management (AJIBM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ajibm.2014.43019
Abstract:

This paper has a conceptual character and explores an approach between transaction cost analysis theory and network theory when applied to supply chains in a broader context: industrial management research. This approach raises the assumptions that fast supply chains, i.e., supply chains made of short time relationships and multiple partners can contribute to destroying trust and collaboration between companies, ending up by stressing actual systems’ arrangements in somehow stable supply chains/network chains. As a consequence, transforming them in distrust arrangements and thus giving birth to new (old) approaches based only on transaction cost analysis theory: opportunism and limited rationality as the continuum for relationships between companies in a globalized world with numerous potential agents/companies that can play several roles. Too high levels of entropy can show this reality: the number of potential players (suppliers, customers or complementors) with theoretically equal probability of establishing partnerships with one focal company in a supply chain or network arrangement is excessive in relation to the number of current suppliers, customers and complementors, and for that reason, the focal company is somehow dissipating energy in identifying several potential players and in a state of giving one way or another equal importance to them all, situation that can affect stable relations with current partners. Theoretically, this will create what looks like strategic fast supply—demand chains or network chains: fast because they are rapidly settle down and fast as they are also rapidly dismantled. Those arrangements are the ones responsible for several possible and fast relations (internalizing resources from the environment and/or externalizing resources to the environment) but, anyway, contributing to loose trust, credibility and running against profitable games with partners already involved with focal companies in stable supply chains.

Abstract: the article presents two different views of the ecstasies of a nun (sister germana) who lived in minas gerais, brazil, in the nineteenth century. the first perspective was the opinion of dr. ant?nio gon?alves gomide, together with an examination by two surgeons; the second was a narrative by the naturalist auguste de saint-hilaire. the goal is to historically situate the texts, investigate the theoretical orientations of the authors and note how they analyzed the woman's moments of ecstasy. the publication of these texts contributed to the study of medical and mental knowledge in the early 19th century in brazil.
Language Teachers as Partners in Crafting Educational Language Policies?
Shohamy,Elana;
íkala, Revista de Lenguaje y Cultura , 2009,
Abstract: the paper presents an expanded view of language policy which incorporates a variety of policy mechanisms which are claimed to affect de facto language policies. these mechanisms include declared policies, language education documents, language tests and language in public space, among others. these policies are initiated and determined by ''policy bodies'' which are part of governments and other groups in authority, but are detached from those who are execute them. the main objective of this paper is to portray the expanded view of language policy, along these mechanisms, and to argue for the involvement and active participation of teachers in this process. i will argue that the participation, discussions and negotiations constitute a civic and democratic obligation on route to valid, open, fair, realistic policies. negotiations with the different stake holders who come the process with experience and knowledge is essential for developing language policies which are valid, constructive, critically based and are based on theory of practice.

Amazonian Fruits: An Overview of Nutrients, Calories and Use in Metabolic Disorders  [PDF]
Moacir Couto de Andrade Júnior, Jerusa Souza Andrade
Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2014.517182
Abstract: Amazonian fruits are outstanding in quality. They are consumed as true delicacies of nature by the Brazilian population. Besides their attractive attributes, i.e. appearance, different textures and distinctive flavors, their nutritional value is diversified in the type of calories and the functional food ingredients. In addition to being very palatable, Amazonian fruits provide energy-rich macronutrients (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates), micronutrients (minerals, water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins), prebiotics (dietary fibers, especially pectin), bioactive substances (carotenoids and polyphenols), variety in the diet and improvement in the organoleptic properties and digestibility of (mixed) foods. This study first aimed to review concepts applicable to nutritional constituents and caloric contents of Amazonian fruits. It also attempted to clarify the potential use of these fruits in metabolic disorders (i.e. diabetes mellitus and/or obesity). To fulfill these purposes, 12 fruits were chosen for their dietetic significance in the Brazilian Amazonia.
