Orienting a new generation of nurses: Expectations of the millennial new graduate  [PDF]
Elaine M. Riegel
Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2013.37062

Generational diversity provides a unique quandary for nursing leaders and educators to enlist, orient, and retain nurses. Millennials are the largest cohort since the Baby Boomers and the age group from which the nursing profession will build its future workforce. This study examined the experiences of the new graduate nurse of the millennial generation as they navigate orientation in an acute care setting. Using a Web-based survey to conduct the study allowed nurses from across the country to participate while providing easy access to the study questions. Analysis of the data through qualitative content analysis demonstrated a dominate theme of seeking structure while expecting an individualized orientation. The survey also revealed the importance of the preceptor and manager in the perceived success of this generation’s transition and a need to assimilate into the professional role of RN. Recognizing that there is a need to promote a more individualized orientation with improved mentoring for novice nurses and their preceptors is evident and challenges nursing leaders and educators to rethink current practices to retain new nurses. Established roles within the hospital and individual nursing units are changing and traditional strategies for recruitment and retention no longer apply. A structured orientation can facilitate the transition from new graduate to professional nurse and assist in the retention of qualified nurses and ultimately safe patient care.

Adaptation and Validation of a Proteolytic Activity Methodology Using Dye-Crosslinked Substrate Tablets  [PDF]
Fernanda Martins, Elaine C. Ramires
Advances in Enzyme Research (AER) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aer.2014.23012
Abstract: Enzymatic activities are important to be quantified in products as enzymatic cleaners, which are used in medical and surgical devices reprocessing. Enzymatic activities are critical for the proper chemical cleaning that intends to remove solid organic dirt from inaccessible sites. The most important enzyme for this purpose is the protease, which is able to dissolve the main dirt attached to medical and surgical instruments. In this context, this study contributes to the development of a new proteolytic activity quantification method and its validation. The methodology is based on colorimetry and uses a UV-Vis spectrophotometer to measure the substrate hydrolysis by the blue color intensity, employing Protazyme AK tablets as substrate.
Improved oligonucleotides for microarrays
Elaine Mardis
Genome Biology , 2000, DOI: 10.1186/gb-2000-1-1-reports032
Abstract: Under the conditions tested, the authors report that the best yield of inverted oligonucleotides represented about 25% of the maximum amount of material that could have been synthesized. Analysis of inversion products following in situ synthesis of mixed-length oligonucleotides, which mimic truncated synthesis products, indicated that the inversion process resulted in effective in situ oligonucleotide purification by eliminating truncated products from the solid support. The inverted products were further tested for function in minisequencing and pyrosequencing assays. Both assays indicated that DNA polymerase could add nucleotides to the 3' -OH end of an oligonucleotide resulting from inversion.There are extensive descriptions of the innovative chemical derivatization of the solid support and of the in situ synthesis protocols which enable the inversion of oligonucleotides. Because ''synthesis on planar solid supports results in a limited quantity of product'', the authors used 50-70 μm diameter polystyrene beads to obtain sufficient product to monitor the individual steps of the inversion procedure. The 5' functionality that allowed inversion was an added o-chlorophenyl phosphodiester moiety, which in the presence of a condensing agent forms a phosphodiester linkage between the 5' end of the oligonucleotide and the solid support. Analysis by capillary electrophoresis of reaction products cleaved from the solid support indicated that two major products were obtained after inversion - a mix of 5' inverted and non-inverted 19 base oligonucleotides (19mers). The 5' inverted 19mers occupied a physically distinct peak on the chromatogram as a result of the attachment of several triethyleneglycol moieties, added to facilitate cleavage of the oligonucleotides from the solid support and to distinguish inverted oligonucleotides from truncated products.According to the authors, this method is suitable for the production of oligonucleotide arrays and is compatible with all ex
Reformando o ensino de História: li??es de continuidade
Rodrigues, Elaine;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742004000200004
Abstract: the teaching of history and the problem of its contents' continuity are discussed. the theme was problematized at two important landmarks in brazilian history. whereas the aims of the discipline moral and civic education show the dictatorial period, the post-dictatorial one is characterized by the (re)birth of democracy. further, the political and pedagogical project of the state of paraná and its expectations in the teaching of history are provided. since our research is based on comparative analysis, results show that the idea that a chasm exists between the form and contents of the teaching of history is misleading. they rather indicate that it is the job of teachers committed to their country to transform it. the jornal de educa??o, the law that established the discipline moral and civic education, the pedagogical project and the basic school curriculum of the state of paraná have been used as first sources.
A representa??o da realeza no Brasil: uma análise dos retratos de D. Jo?o VI e D. Pedro I, de Jean-Baptiste Debret
Dias, Elaine;
Anais do Museu Paulista: História e Cultura Material , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-47142006000100008
Abstract: jean-baptiste debret, history painter and member of the french artistic mission of 1816, in his iconographic album picturesque and historical travel to brazil, has made illustrations from the observation of brazilian uses. part of his work was dedicated to the life of the court in brazil. the author seeks to in this article to analyze the conception of both the portrait of d. jo?o vi and the portrait of d. pedro i, official images of the royalty in brazil produced by the french artist. there is, in debret, a clear counterpoint between the portraits of the father d. jo?o and his son pedro, offering interpretative keys for the political moments in question. the author seeks to analyze and contrast the images, in the sense of their physical description - the differential presence of attributes and their political representation -, bringing to the surface the iconographic changes between the portraits, highlighting the importance of the european and american models in the compositions.
Correspondências entre Joachim Le Breton e a corte portuguesa na Europa: o nascimento da Miss?o Artística de 1816
Dias, Elaine;
Anais do Museu Paulista: História e Cultura Material , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-47142006000200009
Abstract: a series of documents kept at the national archive of tombo tower in lisbon offers us important tools to understand the origin of the 1 81 6 artistic mission. although some brazilian historians have already explored this field extensively - including afonso d'escragnolle taunay, mário barata and mário pedrosa in their invaluable publications, not to mention jean-baptiste debret in his writings - it is important to shed new light on this subject so that we may understand how the project of art and industrial education was conceived in europe byjoachim le breton. how did the mission's project come about? this paper proposes to review certain letters kept at the tombo tower and exchanged between portuguese diplomats and le breton in 1815, while the latter was still in paris, for the ultimate purpose of retracing the first steps of this story.
Os retratos de Maria Isabel e Maria Francisca de Bragan?a, de Nicolas-Antoine Taunay
Dias, Elaine;
Anais do Museu Paulista: História e Cultura Material , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-47142011000200002
Abstract: nicolas-antoine taunay, french landscape painter, produced also several portraits during his stay at the rio de janeiro court. in this city, in 1816, he paints the queen carlota joaquina and all her daughters. in this group, two portraits have a very special way: the paintings still today catalogued as maria francisca and maria teresa, but probably being maria isabel and maria francisca de assis - princesses that, in this year, left brazil to marry the spanish king fernando vii, and his brother carlos maria isidro de bourbon. in this article, beyond to describe these portraits (and analyse the identities of the portrayed princesses), i analyse their functions in the court society and the mains artists of this gender in europe. i will discuss, as well, the hypothesis about the taunay choices. in this sense, i will analyse the possible circulation of the typologies of portrait between italy, portugal, spain and france, understanding these productions by taunay and the functions occupied by these portraits in the political relations between brazil and europe.
Canada's family violence initiative: partnerships
Scott, Elaine;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1994000500017
Abstract: under canada's four-year, $136 million family violence initiative, the federal government is calling upon all canadians to work in partnerships towards the elimination of family violence - child abuse, violence against women, and elder (senior) abuse. family violence is a complex problem and requires the efforts of all canadians to resolve it. one of the key themes of the initiative - a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of family violence - is reflected in the selection and development of projects. activities funded by the seven federal departments and agencies involved in the initiative emphasize partnerships with the professional, voluntary, corporate, non-government and government sectors.
Pronomes resumptivos em Português Brasileiro adulto e infantil
Grolla, Elaine;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502005000200001
Abstract: in this study, i investigate the emergence of resumptive pronouns in the spontaneous production of a child acquiring brazilian portuguese as her native language. i adopt a theory of resumptive pronouns in which these elements are taken to be a last resort strategy. the child's behavior in this respect, together with an analysis of resumptive pronouns in adult bp, lead to the conclusion that the brazilian portuguese data is in accordance with a last resort analysis of resumptive pronouns, although it may look otherwise on the surface. i assume this last resort nature of resumptives is part of an innate knowledge. i conclude this paper discussing the advantages that the analysis presented here brings to a better description of adult brazilian portuguese.
Sobre a aquisi??o tardia de QU in situ em Português Brasileiro
Grolla, Elaine;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502005000100003
Abstract: in this paper i am concerned with the acquisition of wh in situ questions in brazilian portuguese. i try to account for the fact that the child being studied here starts producing this type of question relatively late, if compared to the production of other structures occurring at the left periphery of the sentence. this fact is surprising, given that in adult language such constructions are fairly frequent (cf. lopes-rossi (1996)). i present an analysis to the child's data claiming that the child changes her initial setting of the parameter regulating the operation of wh movement. this parameter resetting is triggered by the identification of a cue present in the input. such parameter resetting is argued to be necessary to properly account for the acquisition data.
