Abstract: this study investigates the main strategies of ethos construction of the consumer-enunciator subject that emerges in the participants' discursive production in a conciliation hearing in a brazilian small claims court (juizado especial de rela??es de consumo) from a city in minas gerais state. for this, we selected two conciliation hearings, which were transcribed and analyzed from the perspective of semiolinguistics theory of patrick charaudeau. data analysis showed that during the analyzed audiences the ethos of victim by the consumer is built through some discursive strategies which are not random; on the contrary, the strategies used are consistent with the speech project that the consumer has in mind and, above all, the ethos that he desires to perform.

Abstract: the imbiru?u [pseudobombax longiflorum (mart. et zucc.) a. robyns] is an arboreous species that occurs in the brazilian savannah. the exploitation and destruction of this biome have reduced the p. longiflorum populations and studies on its germination are crucial for preserving it. this study aimed to evaluate the germination process of two populations of p. longiflorum seeds, on different substrates. a completely randomized design, in a 2x5 factorial scheme (two populations x five substrates), was used, with five replications of 50 seeds for each treatment. the sampled populations were collected in rondonópolis and cuiabá, in the mato grosso state, brazil. substrates consisted of black soil, vermiculite, sand, black soil + vermiculite (1:1) v/v, and black soil + sand (1:1) v/v. the germination percentage of viable and dead seeds, seeds with fungi, and the mean germination time were evaluated. the highest germination rate was observed in the sand substrate (78%), in seeds from cuiabá, and in the sand and vermiculite substrates (36.6%), in seeds from rondonópolis. the mean germination time ranged from 10.6 to 16.5 days, for the seeds from rondonópolis, and from 14.7 to 18.1, for the ones from cuiabá. the seeds from rondonópolis, in the black soil substrate, presented a 66.7% mortality rate, with the presence of the fusarium and rhizoctonia fungi genera. the p. longiflorum seeds from cuiabá showed a higher germination rate than those from rondonópolis, being the most suitable ones for the seedlings production. the sand substrate is the recommended one for the p. longiflorum seeds germination due to its greater ease of acquisition and lower cost.

Abstract: Background The fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is the leading etiological agent of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a systemic granulomatous disease that typically affects the lungs. Cell wall components of P. brasiliensis interact with host cells and influence the pathogenesis of PCM. In yeast, many glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins are important in the initial contact with the host, mediating host-yeast interactions that culminate with the disease. PbPga1 is a GPI anchored protein located on the surface of the yeast P. brasiliensis that is recognized by sera from PCM patients. Methodology/Principal Findings Endogenous PbPga1 was localized to the surface of P. brasiliensis yeast cells in the lungs of infected mice using a polyclonal anti-rPbPga1 antibody. Furthermore, macrophages stained with anti-CD38 were associated with P. brasiliensis containing granulomas. Additionally, rPbPga1 activated the transcription factor NFkB in the macrophage cell line Raw 264.7 Luc cells, containing the luciferase gene downstream of the NFkB promoter. After 24 h of incubation with rPbPga1, alveolar macrophages from BALB/c mice were stimulated to release TNF-α, IL-4 and NO. Mast cells, identified by toluidine blue staining, were also associated with P. brasiliensis containing granulomas. Co-culture of P. Brasiliensis yeast cells with RBL-2H3 mast cells induced morphological changes on the surface of the mast cells. Furthermore, RBL-2H3 mast cells were degranulated by P. brasiliensis yeast cells, but not by rPbPga1, as determined by the release of beta-hexosaminidase. However, RBL-2H3 cells activated by rPbPga1 released the inflammatory interleukin IL-6 and also activated the transcription factor NFkB in GFP-reporter mast cells. The transcription factor NFAT was not activated when the mast cells were incubated with rPbPga1. Conclusions/Significance The results indicate that PbPga1 may act as a modulator protein in PCM pathogenesis and serve as a useful target for additional studies on the pathogenesis of P. brasiliensis.

Abstract: evaluation systems of agricultural land suitability are being used in different regions of brazil, by distinct teams and with multiple applications. the objective of this study was to evaluate, for soils in the state of acre, how different experts evaluate the relative importance of indicators of a land suitability system, and how they interpret properties that can define land suitability classes. ten soil profiles analyzed for the ix brazilian soil classification and correlation workshop were used. these soil profiles are located between rio branco and cruzeiro do sul, municipalities in the amazon region, with sediments of the solim?es formation as soil parent material. the land suitability was interpreted by six experts, based on all land suitability indicators, applied in five degrees of limitation for the factors: fertility deficiency, water deficiency, oxygen deficiency, erosion susceptibility, and impediments to mechanization. from these assessments, the groups and classes of land suitability of each soil profile were established, and the results compared by discriminant analysis. the results indicated the variables nutrient stock, clay content, textural class, drainage class and local relief as the most important to discriminate the environments by the experts. the interpretation of land suitability by the experts was not entirely reproducible for all soils, and was subjected to the diverse experience and knowledge of the evaluators about the environment and different land use types.

Abstract: purpose: failed attempted abortions with the use of misoprostol (cytotec?) without medical indication have been associated with the occurrence of congenital malformations. the objective of the present study was to identify, in newborns with malformations and in normal controls, the frequency of exposure to misoprostol and the spectrum of associated malformations. methods: this was a case-control study involving a daily survey at four public maternities in fortaleza (ce) for the identification of newborns with malformations and paired controls (1:1) during the period from july to november 2005. the sample comprised 252 parturients interviewed by a trained team by means of a structured questionnaire based on the latin american collaborative study of congenital malformations (estudo colaborativo latino-americano de malforma??es congênitas, eclamc). the questionnaire was used to obtain sociodemographic data and a family history of malformations, as well as to identify diverse forms of exposure during pregnancy, including misoprostol. bivariate analysis and the chi-square test were used to compare cases and controls regarding their characteristics and factors associated with malformation, and the odds ratio was calculated to determine the chance of the case group to present malformations as compared to the control group after exposure to misoprostol. results: there were no significant differences between groups regarding most of the risk factors for malformations investigated. attempted abortion was reported by 6.8% of the mothers, with a higher exposure to misoprostol during pregnancy resulting in a greater proportion of malformed newborns, odds ratio (or)=3.65 (95%ci=0.74-17.91). the spectrum of congenital defects encountered with exposure to misoprostol included defects of the central nervous, musculoskeletal, urogenital and cardiovascular systems, in agreement with literature data. conclusion: the findings of this study suggest that fetuses exposed to misoprostol ten
