Abstract: this article aims at provoking reflections concerning nursing education in the light of the curricular directives for the undergraduate course in nursing and their relation to health policies and the current labor market. the facts reported show curricular changes in nursing education in brazil have historically been concerned with the adequacy of the nurse's formation to the interests of the labor market. however, the challenge in nurse's formation needs to overcome the focus of these interests and to effectively insert the future nurse into the health system, committed to the transformations demanded for the exercise of citizenship.

Biotemas , 2012,
Abstract: Phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental variation occurs at all organizational levels and across temporal scales within plants. However, the magnitude and functional significance of this plasticity is little explored in perennial species. We examined the influence of different light regimes and nitrogen (N) availability on the morphological and physiological plasticity of coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L.). Potted plants were grown under full sunlight and shade (50%) and were fertilized with Hoagland’s solutions containing 0, 16 or 23mM N. Most leaf traits responded to light with a classic full sunlight vs. shade dichotomy [e.g., compared with those grown under full sunlight, 50% leaves had a thinner palisade mesophyll and a lower leaf mass per area (LMA) for improved light capture]. The outer periclinal cell walls in both epidermises exhibited thick epicuticular wax and three distinct layers. Chloroplasts of the mesophyll cells were densely occupied by thylakoids and starch grains. These characteristics were observed most clearly in plants supplemented by nitrogen or in those grown in shade conditions. Large starch granules were observed, but no membrane injuries were observed in either treatment. The plasticity index was high for the physiological traits that are associated with photoprotection and the maintenance of a positive carbon balance under shade but was low for most morpho-anatomical features.

Abstract: the nutritional status of under-five children and the association between social conditions and child stature were examined using data from the program to control malnutrition and mortality in the guarita indigenous territory, southern brazil, 2001-2002. anthropometric indices were calculated in z-scores of the cdc 2000 reference. at entrance into the program, 34.7% of the children presented stunting, 12.9% low weight for age, 4.2% wasting, and 8.7% overweight. stunting was most prevalent among boys and children older than one year. multivariate linear regression showed that, on average, children were shorter when the drinking water was collected directly in the environment (p = 0.046), there was no refrigerator for food preservation (p = 0.021), maternal age was less than 16 years at the birth of the oldest child among the under-fives (p = 0.019), and the mother was illiterate (p = 0.083). sewage facilities only had an effect on the unadjusted model. there was no evidence that the number of under-five children had an effect on stature. social inclusion policies and health and social provision which takes these factors into account are potentially relevant for improving health and nutrition in this population.

Abstract: A recent clinical trial in African children demonstrated the potential utility of merozoite surface protein (MSP)-3 as a vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The present study evaluated the use of Plasmodium vivax MSP-3 (PvMSP-3) as a target antigen in vaccine formulations against malaria caused by P. vivax. Recombinant proteins representing MSP-3α and MSP-3β of P. vivax were expressed as soluble histidine-tagged bacterial fusions. Antigenicity during natural infection was evaluated by detecting specific antibodies using sera from individuals living in endemic areas of Brazil. A large proportion of infected individuals presented IgG antibodies to PvMSP-3α (68.2%) and at least 1 recombinant protein representing PvMSP-3β (79.1%). In spite of the large responder frequency, reactivity to both antigens was significantly lower than was observed for the immunodominant epitope present on the 19-kDa C-terminal region of PvMSP-1. Immunogenicity of the recombinant proteins was studied in mice in the absence or presence of different adjuvant formulations. PvMSP-3β, but not PvMSP-3α, induced a TLR4-independent humoral immune response in the absence of any adjuvant formulation. The immunogenicity of the recombinant antigens were also tested in formulations containing different adjuvants (Alum, Salmonella enterica flagellin, CpG, Quil A,TiterMax? and incomplete Freunds adjuvant) and combinations of two adjuvants (Alum plus flagellin, and CpG plus flagellin). Recombinant PvMSP-3α and PvMSP-3β elicited higher antibody titers capable of recognizing P. vivax-infected erythrocytes harvested from malaria patients. Our results confirm that P. vivax MSP-3 antigens are immunogenic during natural infection, and the corresponding recombinant proteins may be useful in elucidating their vaccine potential.

Abstract:

Background: Women undergoing mastectomy may have postural asymmetries due to mutilation, culminating in changes in postural balance. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the mastectomy in the postural control of women undergoing surgical treatment of breast cancer. Methods: We evaluated 40 volunteers divided into two groups: women undergoing mastectomy (MG) with a mean age of 51.45 (SD 6.49) years old and mean BMI of 30.71 (SD 5.21) kg/m2, and a control group of women without the disease (CG) with a mean age of 50.50 (SD 7.85) years old and mean BMI of 30.50 (SD 5.77). Static balance was assessed using the displacement of the center of pressure (COP), with voluntary bipedal support with eyes open and closed on a force platform. Statistical analysis was performed using the software SPSS 21.0 with a significance level of 5%. Results: The MG showed an increase in the displacement area along the x-axis (P = 0.003) and total displacement (P < 0.001) with eyes open (EO), and an increase in the x-axis (P = 0.002) and total displacement (P < 0.001) with eyes closed
