Geriatrics intensive care unit: Outcome and risk factors for in hospital mortality  [PDF]

Abstract:

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate outcome and risk factors, particularly the (APATCHE II) score in elderly patients after admission to a geriatrics intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: A cross sectional study of patients ≥ 60 years admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Geriatrics department at Ain Shams University Hospital over 2 years period. We recorded age, sex, previous medical history, primary diagnosis, date of admission and discharge or death and APACHE II score on admission. Results: 202 patients admitted to the ICU were studied. The mean ICU mortality rates for these patients were (32, 5%), the mean APATCHE II score was (19.07). 27.3% of patients who died had hypokalemia and 43.2% had hyponatremia. Conclusion: ICU mortality rate are higher in elderly patients particularly with long ICU stay and hyponatremia.

Melting and Corrosion Behavior of Al-9Zn Based Alloys with Cu and Mg Additions  [PDF]

Abstract: In the present paper, the effect of Mg and Cu additions on melting, mechanical and corrosion behavior of Al-9Zn alloy was studied and analyzed. It was found that, addition of Cu and Mg led to form the Al-Cu, Al-Mg and Mg-Zn intermetallic compounds. These compounds tend to increase the hardness values due to the precipitation strengthening hardening mechanism of these compounds. Also corrosion behavior of the Cu and Mg content alloys measured by the weight loss method is better than those of the Al-9Zn alloy. Furthermore, corrosion resistance of the Cu content alloys is superior to that of the Mg content alloys.

Abstract: Traditional products working independently are no longer sufficient, since threats are continually gaining in complexity, diversity and performance; In order to proactively block such threats we need more integrated information security solution. To achieve this objective, we will analyze a real-world security platform, and focus on some key components Like, NAC, Firewall, and IPS/IDS then study their interaction in the perspective to propose a new security posture that coordinate and share security information between different network security components, using a central policy server that will be the NAC server or the PDP (the Policy Decision Point), playing an orchestration role as a central point of control. Finally we will conclude with potential research paths that will impact NAC technology evolution.

Chromium iron phosphate glass was investigated for use as waste form because of its improved chemical durability. The introduction of chromium in sodium-iron-phosphate glass is used to compare its effect with iron in inhibition of corrosion. The sodium-chromium-iron phosphate glass of composition 10Na2O-30Fe2O3-5Cr2O3-55P2O5 (mol%) was produced by melting batches of (99, 98% pure) Cr2O3, Fe2O3, Na2CO3, and (NH4)2HPO4 at 1080°C for one hour and pouring the liquid into steel mold. Abstract:

In this paper, we use Monte Carlo simulations to compare parametric estimators of Type 1 Tobit model. In particular, we examine the performance for finite samples of three different estimators of simple Tobit model: the least squares (LS) estimator, the Heckman (H) estimator and the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator. These three estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal in the case where the density error is specified. However, these properties are sensitive to the situation where the error distribution is not specified. The purpose of this article is to determine properties of the three estimators, namely bias and convergence, by using Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:

Promethazine modified carbon paste ion selective electrode has been prepared, based on the ion pair of promethazine hydrochloride Pm.Cl with sodium tetraphenyl boron(III) Pm-TPB dissolved in dioctyl phthalate DOP as a pasting liquid. The electrode showed the linear response with mean calibration graph slope of 58 mV/decade at 25℃; at a concentration range and a lower detection limit of 1 × 10-5 -6 × 10-2 M and 8 × 10-6 M promethazine hydrochloride, respectively. The change of pH of the tested solution within the range 4.2 -6.8 did not affect the electrode performance. The electrode showed a very good selectivity toward Pm+ cations with respect to a large number of organic and inorganic cations and compounds. The standard addition and potentiometric titration methods were applied for the determination of promethazine hydrochloride in pure solution and in pharmaceutical preparations with an average recovery range of 97.3% -101.4% and a mean relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.35% -1.83 % which were of comparable accuracy and precision to the previously reported works.

Abstract: Application of the commercial formulation of chlorpyrifos has resulted in considerable environmental contamination. This study was designed to develop environmentally acceptable chlorpyrifos formulation for safe and effective application. This involved the modification of clay surfaces from hydrophilic to hydrophobic via ion-exchange reaction with organic cations. The resulting organo-clay complexes were tested for adsorption and release of chlorpyrifos. HPLC and FTIR measurements showed considerable adsorption and strong interaction between chlorpyrifos molecules and the organo-clay complexes. Basal spacing results emphasized the formation of suitable micro-pores for chlorpyrifos molecules. HPLC and bioassay techniques confirmed the slow release of chlorpyrifos. Leaching potential showed retention of chlorpyrifos in the top soil. Therefore application of organoclay formulation of chlorpyrifos may reduce their potential environmental contamination and produce safe applications.

A Hierarchical Load Balancing Policy for Grid Computing Environment

Abstract: With the rapid development of high-speed wide-area networks and powerful yet low-cost computational resources, grid computing has emerged as an attractive computing paradigm. It provides resources for solving large scientific applications. It is typically composed of heterogeneous resources such as clusters or sites at different administrative domains connected by networks with widely varying performance characteristics. The service level of the grid software infrastructure provides two essential functions for workload and resource management. To efficiently utilize the resources at these environments, effective load balancing and resource management policies are fundamentally important. This paper addresses the problem of load balancing and task migration in grid computing environments. We propose a fully decentralized two-level load balancing policy for computationally intensive tasks on a heterogeneous multi-cluster grid environment. It resolves the single point of failure problem which many of the current policies suffer from. In this policy, any site manager receives two kinds of tasks namely, remote tasks arriving from its associated local grid manager, and local tasks submitted directly to the site manager by local users in its domain, which makes this policy closer to reality and distinguishes it from any other similar policy. It distributes the grid workload based on the resources occupation ratio and the communication cost. The grid overall mean task response time is considered as the main performance metric that need to be minimized. The simulation results show that the proposed load balancing policy improves the grid overall mean task response time.
