Abstract: the aims of this work were to estimate the coefficient of relatedness within families and the genetic parameters for growth related traits in a progeny test from an open-pollinated variety of pinus caribaea morelet hondurensis barret & golfari, established in mato grosso do sul state, brazil. the experimental design was the triple 10 x 10 lattice, with 96 families, three replicates, and ten plants per plot. fourteen years after planting, the trial was measured for the following traits: total height, diameter at breast height (dbh), and true volume. the estimation of coefficients of relatedness within family from microsatellite loci indicated that families are true half-sibs (^rxy = 0.253). thus, the additive genetic variance (σ2a) can be estimated assuming that the genetic variance among progenies (σ2p) accounts for ? of additive genetic variance (^σ2a = 4^σ2p). the estimative of heritability coefficients at individual level (hi2) was relatively high (0.28 for dbh and 0.44 for height). the heritability coefficient considering the average families (hm2) was also high, ranging among the traits from 0.50 to 0.58. these results suggest that the population can be improved by both massal and among families selection. additionally, the estimated genetic gains with sequential selection among and within families were high (ranging from 8.92% for height to 37.56% for volume), demonstrating that this method of selection can generate high genetic improvement.

Japanese Are Modest Even When They Are Winners: Competence Ratings of Winners and Losers in Social Comparison  [PDF]

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2013.411119
Abstract:

Social comparison experiments in two different social conditions, competing between friends and between strangers, were carried out with 88 Japanese male undergraduates. Participants were asked to come to the laboratory in friend pairs to participate in the experiment. Two pairs were randomly combined for each experimental session. In the Between-Friends condition, one of the two pairs solved 20 anagrams competitively while the other pair observed them. In the Between-Strangers condition, one performer and one observer were randomly chosen in each pair and the performers solved anagram tasks competitively. As in our previous study, the anagram tasks were presented utilizing a presentation trick so that one performer-and-observer group viewed easier anagrams than the other group without their noticing the difference. As intended, those who viewed the easier anagrams outperformed the others, becoming winners in all sessions. No participants noticed the trick. After the task, all four participants rated the ability of the two performers including themselves. Their ability ratings showed that they tended to evaluate their own ability modestly. Even winners consistently rated themselves lower than the others rated them. Two possible explanations of why Japanese participants made such modest responses were presented and discussed.

Abstract: this work had the aim to verify the effect of the number of plants per plot in the evaluation of half-sib families. for that, 25 half-sib families of cms-39 were evaluated with the experimental design being a simple lattice, 5 x 5, with two replications. each plot was constituted by three lines with 10 m of length. each plot was subdivided in sub-plots with five plants, being discarded extremities. associating the contiguous sub-plots it was possible to simulate 270 variance analyses, with the number of plants per plot varying from 5 to 135. genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated with their respective errors. expected selection response yield was also simulated for each sample size. in this simulation, it was verified that the number of plants per plot affected experimental precision. as larger was the number of plants, more accurate were the experiments; plots with the same number of plants, even so distributed in two or three lines, provide greater experimental precision. the selection expected response decreases with the increase in the number of plants per plot.

Abstract: this article presents a research program developed for the evaluation and determination of the morh-coulomb model parameters and the hardening soil model parameters in clay soils. the metodology includes the analysis of some correlations, basic characterization soil tests and undrained compression triaxial tests carried out on reconstituted soil samples in laboratory (kaolin). from the obtained parameters the behavior stress-strain was simulated in the element finite software plaxis, examiningthe performance of the models by comparing the numeric calculation results with the experimental soil behavior. for the sets of considered model parameters, the analysis shows that the computational results have a reasonable agreement with the experimental results, appreciating a better approximation to the behavior described by the tests in the simulations performed with the hardening soil model, whose results evidence a better grade of adjustment to the typical hyperbolic relationship of the soil tested. in addition, the concluding results represent an important validation of the methodology program developed.

This article presents a research program developed for the evaluation and determination of the Morh-Coulomb model parameters and the Hardening Soil model parameters in clay soils. The metodology includes the analysis of some correlations, basic characterization soil tests and undrained compression triaxial tests carried out on reconstituted soil samples in laboratory (kaolin). A Revival of Little Black Sambo in Japan  [PDF]
Kazuo Mori
Advances in Literary Study (ALS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/als.2014.21003
Abstract:

In the late 1980s, a popular children’s book “Little Black Sambo”(hereafter,LBS) disappeared from all bookstores in Japan. The book was alleged to have racist characteristics such as the name of the boy, the way the illustrations caricatured blacks, etc. Mori (1997) revised the original story by changing the protagonist from a black boy to a black Labrador puppy, with eliminating the word “Sambo”,which had a historically pejorative connotation in the US. Mori (2005) conducted an experiment to compare the entertainment value of the two versions of LBS using four-year-old children and found no difference. Mori (2005) also casted a suspicion that the real reason why the book was withdrawnin Japan was a matter of piracy rather than racism. All Japanese publishers at that time had not properly obtained the copyright. Nowadays there are several versions of LBS available in bookstores all over Japan.
