Work, the Brazilian Women, and the Teaching Profession: Some Notes  [PDF]

Abstract: In this article, we present some notes on three distinct themes, but whose understanding requires an interdisciplinary analysis considering presenting aspects that intertwine and feature dependent ways from each other. Thus, the introduction presents the world of work aspects in our society, seeking to situate the important participation of all its processes, including women, through training processes of the production of knowledge on education. Then, we present a reflection on the work of women, double work shift and the division of labor between the sexes. Finally, we discuss some historical aspects about the woman in the teacher profession in Brazil.

Abstract: In the first part of the paper Castoriadis' critical analysis of Plato's Statesman is discussed and the main points of this critique, chiefly the concealment of politics and democracy are presented. The second part (which is followed by a short comparison of the projects of autonomy and Inclusive Democracy) briefly deals with Castoriadis’ critique of contemporary political practice and theory, and depicts the unravelling of politics and of democracy-- views which are particularly significant for us today.

Abstract: The aim of this article is twofold. First, to discuss the institutional preconditions of a democratic paideia, both at the social level and the educational level itself. Second, to examine a transition strategy for the move from present miseducation (as it evolved in modernity) to a democratic paideia, through an emancipatory education process. A basic tenet of the approach adopted by this paper is that education is intrinsically linked to politics as the very meaning of education is assumed to be defined by the prevailing meaning of politics.
Education and Entry into Motherhood: The Czech Republic during State Socialism and the Transition Period (1970-1997)

Abstract: The Czech Republic presently shows one of the lowest total fertility rates (TFR) in Europe. A decline in period fertility followed the transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy that started in 1990. In this study, we investigate women's transition to first births, focusing on the impact of female education. We make a distinction between the effects of education attainment and time elapsed since completion of education. There are two aspects to the role of education that influenced the delay of entry into motherhood in the 1990s. First, during early adulthood women spent more time in education than their contemporaries did in the era of state socialism. Second, women entered motherhood much later after completion of education than before, which contrasts with the previous pattern of a strong immediate effect the completion of studies had on first-birth risks. The decline in first-birth risks in the 1990s applies more so to women with a higher level of education than to those with a lower level. We argue that greater education differentiation of labor market opportunities and constraints brought about greater education differentiation in the timing of entry into motherhood.

Educazione, a questo punto, potrebbe diventare sinonimo di affetto. Questa è la premessa. Da alcuni anni, con Teresa, stiamo verificando sul campo l’efficacia di queste idee nella quotidianità della vita scolastica in una scuola media della Toscana. Abbiamo lavorato creando collaborazioni con ragazzi giudicati irrecuperabili e dopo molte storie accumulate abbiamo deciso, quest’anno, di tenere un diario scolastico , di cui fa parte questo primo articolo.

Abstract: La fabrication d’honnêtes homes. Or how Maria-Theresia tried to create model citizens in the colleges of Austrian Netherlands (1777-1789) During the second half of the 18th century, education became a political issue in large areas of Europe. The Austrian Netherlands whole-heartedly took part in this movement. Here, the government shared the optimistic believe of enlightened philosophers that education was able to mould youth and to change society in a specific way. In this article, we take a closer look at the moral and the religious education that young people received in the colleges. Focussing both on normative documents and on sources that unveil day-to-day reality in the schools, we sketch the ideal of the honest men the government wanted to fabricate, and we evaluate the results of this undertaking at different levels.

Confluent Education in a Counseling Psychology Program  [PDF]

Abstract: This study examined the effectiveness of using a humanistic teaching model in a graduate level counseling program. Specifically, the Confluent Education model was implemented in a Master’s level, psychological assessment course. The results of a knowledge test suggested only marginally significant differences between the experimental and traditionally taught (control) groups. However, the results from student feedback clearly showed that the students in the experimental group preferred Confluent Education over the traditional model, which suggests that Confluent Education is more engaging and increases the student’s confidence in their counseling and critical thinking skills.
