Verani, José Fernando de S.;Maranh?o, Eduardo P.;Laender, Fernando;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1993000100004
Abstract: this article describes the process by which some concepts of epidemiological surveillance are elaborated and turned into operational categories to comprise the so-called epidemiologial surveillance system for two specific diseases. the authors describe some epidemiological concepts and categories which were elaborated over the course of the smallpox eradication program and more recently in the poliomyelitis eradication program. such concepts and categories as outbreak containment, cross-notification, and case definitions are described as they fit into a series of actions which make up the epidemiological surveillance system. finally, it is worth noting that the description developed in this article is based on personal observations, since the authors participated in the smallpox eradication program in bangladesh and somalia as well as in the regional poliomyelitis eradication program in the americas.
Seroprevalence of antibodies against rubella virus in pregnant women in Haiti
Désinor,Olbeg Y.; Ansèlme,Renette J. P.; Laender,Fernando; Saint-Louis,Calerbe; Bien-Aimé,Jean Eddy;
Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892004000300002
Abstract: objective: to assess the seroprevalence of immunity to the rubella virus in pregnant women in haiti attending the obstetrics and gynecology department of the state university hospital, in the capital city of port-au-prince, in order to help with the introduction of the rubella vaccine for the population and provide protection for women of reproductive age in the country. methods: this cross-sectional study was done between february 2002 and may 2002. a total of 503 pregnant women were tested for rubella-specific immunoglobulin g antibodies, using enzyme immunoassay; 8 of those women were later excluded because they did not know their age, leaving 495 women in the analysis. results: of the 495 participants included in our analysis, 471 of them (95.2%) were seropositive; only 24 of them (4.8%) were seronegative (susceptible). a statistically significant difference (p = 0.02) was found in the rate of seronegativity for rubella virus between the pregnant women living in the port-au-prince area (17 of 426 women, or 4.0%) and those living in rural areas (7 of 69 women, or 10.1%). in terms of age, 81 of the 495 (16.4%) women were under 21 years old. conclusions: this study is an important first step in addressing the issue of prevalence of rubella virus infection among haitian women and in dealing with the still-underrecognized public health problem of congenital rubella syndrome in haiti. we recommend additional research that uses randomized sampling and includes a significant proportion of women from rural areas of the country.
Assessing the Leadership Skills of the Chiefs of Police in the Towns of Nueva Ecija, Philippines: A Dichotomy between Managerial Competence and Decision Making Ability  [PDF]
Jesster P. Eduardo, Arneil G. Gabriel
Open Journal of Leadership (OJL) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojl.2017.64011
Abstract:
The study of organizational behavior and performance is often linked to organizational leadership. The Police force as civilian in character is mandated to maintain peace and order in the community and is expected to effectively and efficiently control crime. Short to meet the mandate calls for a study of police leadership. The performance of police office as a group depends to a great extent on the leadership skills of its Chief of Police (COP). The study used the Attribution Theory to analyze the leadership skills of police offices in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Better police performance is first and foremost an attribute of a skilled police chief. By using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods of research, the study measured the leadership domains of “managerial competence and decision-making ability” of the participating heads of police offices. The paper argued that leadership is vital to a performing police office and thus “managerial competence” and “decision-making ability” as important domains of leadership must always be part of the professional growth and development of the COP. The dichotomy between the two domains must remain at bay while training and education programs are instituted to the level of the two leadership domains thereby improving considerably the performance of the police offices.
Un modelo simple para describir la dinámica de la biomasa del camarón nailon Heterocarpus reedi en Coquimbo, Chile
Pérez,Eduardo P.;
Investigaciones marinas , 2005, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-71782005000200001
Abstract: a daily record of space/time dynamics was carried out on cpue (ton·trawl-1) for the nylon shrimp trawl fishery based at coquimbo, chile, between september 1997 and august 2000. a modified biomass depletion model was constructed to analyze the temporal variations in cpue based on the concepts of abundance (total population biomass) and availability (potential biomass capture). both quantities were calculated by equations whose differences (positive and negative) indicated the changes in availability of biomass over time, as well as recruitmernt (magnitude and seasonality). the modified model suggested there were two periods annually, of different lengths, and different biomasses available with the fishing gear. the model also indicated a more rapid rate of reduction in biomass than did the cpue. the results could influence the determination of the best season for carrying out direct resource evaluations aimed at determining catch quotas
An economic analysis of the Heterocarpus reedi and Cervimunida johni fisheries off northern-central Chile, from 1997 to 2000
Pérez,Eduardo P;
Investigaciones marinas , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-71782007000200005
Abstract: the economic effects resulting from the diminishing catch per unit of effort (cpue) in the nylon shrimp and squat lobster fishery off northern-central chile from 1997 to 2000 were evaluated. a bio-technological simulation model was used that describes the physical and biological performance variables for the fishery. an economic submodel was incorporated to the original model in order to perform an integrated analysis of the crustacean fishery, including the catch and processing sub-sectors. the economic results, in conjunction with the data on catch and stock size, explained this fishery's dynamic off northern-central chile during the study period. the total catch increased 21% between 1997 and 2000 and the final production increased 24%, but the quasi rent of the variable costs increased only 11%. the same period saw costs associated with fishing trips increase 117% and the total production cost increased 93%. the study results showed that part of the profits were lost due to the decreased biomass of both resources and the excessive increase in the average production costs, which were explained by the increased fishing trip costs. in order to obtain a better representation of the fishery's performance, economic references points should be incorporated to complement the traditional biological (biomass) and fishery (cpue, catches) proxies
Una modificación de la ecuación de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy para incluir el efecto de la temperatura en el crecimiento del abalón rojo Haliotis rufescens para su uso en acuicultura
Pérez,Eduardo P;
Revista de biología marina y oceanografía , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-19572010000200012
Abstract: biological information, available in specialized journals, was used to reinterpret the growth pattern of haliotis rufescens as temperature dependent. von bertalanffy growth curves (vbgf) using age and length experimental data under five different temperature regimes gathered in iceland was obtained. using these vbgc an inverse relationship between culture temperature and average maximum length (l∞) was established. furthermore, an inverse relationship between l∞ and brody coefficient (k) was evident. then, using l∞, k and the growth performance index (φ') a general vbgf was fitted, which it does l∞ temperature _ dependent, while k is dependent from l∞ values. finally, using ancillary information, the modified vbgf including the temperature effect on the h. rufescens growth pattern could have a more generalized application. new growth estimates are required to give more robust use to the modified equation is proposed.

Abstract: RESUMEN. A daily record of space/time dynamics was carried out on CPUE (ton·trawl-1) for the nylon shrimp trawl fishery based at Coquimbo, Chile, between September 1997 and August 2000. The H-index Paradox: Your Coauthors Have a Higher H-index than You Do

Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: One interesting phenomenon that emerges from the typical structure of social networks is the friendship paradox. It states that your friends have on average more friends than you do. Recent efforts have explored variations of it, with numerous implications for the dynamics of social networks. However, the friendship paradox and its variations consider only the topological structure of the networks and neglect many other characteristics that are correlated with node degree. In this article, we take the case of scientific collaborations to investigate whether a similar paradox also arises in terms of a researcher's scientific productivity as measured by her H-index. The H-index is a widely used metric in academia to capture both the quality and the quantity of a researcher's scientific output. It is likely that a researcher may use her coauthors' H-indexes as a way to infer whether her own H-index is adequate in her research area. Nevertheless, in this article, we show that the average H-index of a researcher's coauthors is usually higher than her own H-index. We present empirical evidence of this paradox and discuss some of its potential consequences.
Vaivenes de un temprano intento de sustitución de importaciones: la producción de ácido tartárico en Mendoza en los comienzos de la especialización vitivinícola
Pérez Romagnoli,Eduardo;
Mundo agrario , 2009,
Abstract: the work refers to the first experiences producing tartaric acid in mendoza, on the beginnings of 20th century. the tartaric acid, elaborated from wine making remainders, is essential to correct the low acidity of musts obtained in the wine argentine region. the aim is to tackle the conditions that led to the regional manufacture of this product, the tasks of regional and extra-regional businessmen and some of the problems they have faced. the hypothesis is that, besides the "induced" industries (metallurgy, cooperage), the modern viticulture and wine making have caused the birth and development of "derivative" industries, as that it is analyzed.
