Abstract: topography of the opening points of the parotid ducts into the vestibule of the mouth from a female adult "guara" wolf (chrysocyon brachyrus) coming from the sabiá park zoo in the city of uberlandia, minas gerais, brazil, was studied. horizontal incisions were performed on the walls of the vestibule of the mouth on each side up to the point of the labial comissure that allowed the identification of the parotid duct openings as well as its relationships with the vestibular surface of the pre-molar and upper molar teeth. in this opportunity, it could be observed that, in this animal, the parotid ducts open into in correspondence to the upper first molar tooth.

Abstract: The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a complex disease that affects mainly the immune and hematological systems of cats. And because the thymus was closely associated with the immune system, the aim of this study was to quantify the morphological changes in the thymus of naturally infected and uninfected animals. Thymus morphological changes were evaluated by quantifying the following parameters: thymocytes, fat tissue, thymic corpuscles, connective tissue, and type I and III collagen. This study analyzed a total of seven cats, five in the negative group (Fn) and two in the positive (Fp) group. The areas occupied by thymocytes in FeLV negative (Fn) and positive (Fp) animals were, respectively, 55.16% ± 6.15% and 44.81% ± 6.15% (p = 0.39); adipocytes, 42.14% ± 5.97% (Fn) and 53.42% ± 11.3% (Fp) (p = 0.34); blood vessels, 0.85% ± 0.24% (Fn) and 1.75% ± 0.52% (Fp) (p = 0.15). Whereas thymic corpuscles occupied an area of 0.68% ± 0.19% in negative animals (Fn) only. The connective tissue covered area varied between 12.05% ± 0.68% (Fn) and 10.34% ± 0.62% (Fp) (p = 0.009). Collagen type I (p = 0.30) and type III (p = 0.59) were present in, respectively, 1.73% ± 0.3% and 0.44% ± 0.09% in Fn, and 1.44% ± 0.36 and 0.44% ± 0.13% in Fp. The FeLV virus was not able to completely modify the thymus structure of infected animals, considering the areas occupied by thymocytes, adipose tissue, blood vessels and also type I and III collagens. However, the connective tissue underwent a certain degree of remodeling since less connective tissue area was observed in FeLV infected animals. The absence of thymic corpuscles in immunosuppressed animals suggests a possible connection to thymopoiesis.

Abstract: Given the importance of the thymus to the immune system and the limited knowledge about its development and involution processes, this study evaluated the expression of the vascular endo-thelial growth factor, a key angiogenic factor for the formation of vascular tissue bed and modulation of functions related to cell proliferation and migration, hormone synthesis, and immunomodulation. In this study, thymus samples of dog fetuses (30, 40, 50 and 60 days old), and young (180 days old) and adult (365 days old) dogs were submitted to real-time PCR and Western blot. Time-dependent changes were observed for proteins and genes associated with the development of the vascular system, such as VEGF-A, VEGF-C, Flt-1, KDR, FLT-4, and EG-VEGF. This result demonstrates that these system components play different roles during development and involution of the thymus. Possible functions, such as the modulatory effect on vasculogenesis and microenvironment, influence the proliferation and differentiation of thymocytes, T cells maturation, cell-cell interaction and hormone secretion.
Macroscopic and histomorphometric analysis of the esophagogastric junction region of horses used for traction

Abstract: The esophagogastric junction was evaluated macroscopically and histologically, seeking to identify adaptive changes in a sample of six adult horses, being four males and two females, used for traction. The mucosa of the esophagogastric junction region was evaluated macroscopically with regard to the staining and the presence of ulcers. Tissue samples from this region were subjected to the conventional histologic technique and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. Aiming to measure the thickness of the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, the software ProgRes Capture Pro 2.5 was used. It was possible to observe ulcers in four animals, they presented themselves in the form of countless millimetric erosions along the margo plicatus, with an approximate diameter of 0.5mm, and a lesion extending from the margo plicatus to the esophagogastric junction region measuring 14.2 x 2.7cm. It was found that the average thickness of the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, measured with an increase of 10x, was 104.9μm+31.98. A particular arrangement for each animal was observed, and it was proved through statistical analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey’s test, thus revealing the morphological adaptation of the region.
Arterial supply to the cloacal bursa of the Lhoman White LSL lineage fowl (Gallus gallus Linnaeus, 1758)

Abstract: A study has been carried out on the origin, number and disposition of the arterial branches supplying the cloacal bursas of 30 female fowl (Gallus gallus) of the Lhoman White LSL lineage, aged between eight and ten weeks. The right isquiadic artery was cannulated and injected with a 50% colored solution of Neoprene latex “450”. Next, the samples were fixed with a 10% formalin solution through deep intramuscular, subcutaneous and intracavitary injections for a period of at least 48 hours. Dissections confirmed that the cloacal bursa was supplied by direct branches from the right bursocloacal arteries in 29 cases (96.67%), the left bursocloacal arteries in 28 cases (93.33%), the right cloacal arteries in 13 cases (43.33%), and the left cloacal arteries in 15 cases (50%). The number of branches from the arteries, independent of their origin, varied from two to six. There were two branches in 5 cases (16.67%), three branches in 14 cases (46.67%), four branches in 3 cases (10%), five branches in 6 cases (20%), and six branches in 1 case (3.33%). The distribution of the vessels was unique in each sample.

Abstract: The origins, numbers and type of arterial branches responsible for the blood supply of thoracic lobes of the thymus were studied in 28 stillborn dogs of the Great Dane, of which 18 were males and 10 were females. The arterial systems of these animals were filled with aqueous solution of Neoprene Latex “450”, 50%. After, the specimens were fixed in 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution. The lobes of the thymus were supplied by direct or indirect arterial branches coming from the right and left internal thoracic arteries, pericardiacophrenicas arteries, right and left costocervicais trunks, and left subclavian artery. The left subclavian artery and brachiocephalic trunk emitted direct branches towards the left thoracic lobe of the thymus.

Abstract: This study aims to discover more about the arterial supply of cervical lobes of the thymus, in relation to its origins, distribution and ordination in swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) of Camborough 25 lineage. Thus, 29 swine (17 males and 12 females) were studied. The arterial system of the models was colored with aqueous solution of Neoprene Latex “450” (50%) and after the models were fixed in 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution. Great individual variations in the length and size of the thymus vessel supply, and also in the layout, size and thickness of the cervical lobes of the thymus, were observed. The superficial cervical artery (96.55%), common carotid artery (54.54%) and occipital artery (55.17%) contribute to the blood supply of the cervical lobes on both sides. In addition, branches from the lingual artery (3.45%) and internal carotid artery (3.45%) on both sides, as well as the subclavian artery (6.90%) on the left side, were observed. No significant differences in vascularization of lobes in relation to antimerals or sexes were evidenced. Considering the findings, it was conclued that each animal had its own characteristics and peculiarities, thus enabling the establishment of a particular arrangement of the swine strain.

Abstract: This study aimed at describing the particular morphological aspects of the arteries responsible for blood supply of thymus in Camborough 22 swine fetuses. In order to do so, the origin and distribution of the arteries which vascularize the right and left thoracic lobes of thymus, 30 Camborough 22 swine fetuses, being 15 males and 15 females, were studied. The animals had the arterial system filled with aqueous solution at 50% stained Neoprene Latex, through the descending portion of thoracic aorta, and then it was fixed at 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution. The thoracic lobes of thymus were vascularized by direct branches of the right (40%) and left (30%) internal thoracic arteries, and left superficial cervical (3.33%). Bicarotid trunk (3.33%) contributed with direct branches to de left thoracic lobe of thymus. The left (50%) and right (66.67%) internal thoracic arteries, right (6.67%) and left (6.67%) subclavian, right deep cervical (3.33%) and left dorsal scapular (3.33%) provided indirect branches for the correspondent thoracic lobes of the thymus in each side. The brachiocephalic (13.33%) and the bicarotid (6.67%) trunks destined indirect branches to the thoracic lobe of thymus at the same side. There were no significant differences in relation to the origin of the arteries, the kinds of branches and sex of the festuses regarding the side of thymus lobe which was vascularized.

Abstract: electrocardiographic parameters of 20 thoroughbred arabian horses were established at rest and after prolonged endurance exercise. the mean heart rate was 35.85bpm at rest with predominant sinus rhythm, and 53.78bpm with sinus tachycardia after exercise. as physiological variation, wandering pacemaker was observed, and as non physiological, premature ventricular complex was noted. at post-exercise there was an increase of the amplitude of waves p, r, s and t, with p wave tending to become single in 35% of the animals and bifid positive in 65%, and with monophase positive t wave. there was a reduction in the duration of the waves, intervals and segments, and elongation of qtc, but the qrs complex hardly changed. the electrical axis in the frontal plane showed deviations to the right and to the left at rest, suggesting chamber enlargement and hypertrophy secondary to training, while after the exercise it showed extreme deviation to the right, indicating electrolyte imbalances. the average heart score was 128.45ms, which features the animals as athletes, being reduced to 118.60ms after exercise.

Abstract: cardiomyocytes are sustained and inserted into a connective tissue skeleton that has different distribution depending up on the properties of the region in which it stands. the purpose of this study was to quantify the proportion of connective tissue in relation to the arrangement of cardiomyocytes of left and right ventricles and interventricular septum in myocardium of six mixed breed, ill trifted adult horses, of both sexes, used for traction. with hearts still fresh and with the aid of a digital caliper, it was estimated the height of left ventricle, the heart's width, the heart's circumference and the thickness of the ventricular free walls and interventricular septum. the fragments on the middle third of the interventricular septum and free walls of the ventricles were subjected to conventional histological technique. the blocks were cut with thickness of 5μm and stained with picrosirius red, gomori trichrome and azan trichrome to show the connective tissue. the slides were analyzed using optical microscope coupled to a digital analysis program image-pro plus?. the average proportion of connective tissue in the left ventricle was 6.1+3.7%, in the interventricular septum and it was observed a mean of 6.8+3.6%. in the right ventricle the average was 6.0+3.0%. applying the h test of kruskal-wallis, it was found that there was statistical difference between the different dyes used for each region. in the pearson correlation test it was not found pattern correlation between the thickness of the regions analyzed and the proportion of connective tissue
