Abstract: aiming at the evaluation of the possibility to change the point of addition of hydrated lime, from the slurry stocking tanks of the pipeline to the feed of the concentrate thickeners, a sample of the feed material of samarco's concentrator was collected. laboratory experiments, involving grinding, dispersion, desliming and flotation, were carried out by varying the addition of hydrated lime as a function of the slurry's ph, to check out the interference generated by the ca2+ cations present in the recovered water over the desliming and flotation processes. the ph targeted level was chosen to better comply with the slurry rheology control during the pumping process (ph=11,4). the results appointed the change as possible, given the performance of the desliming process receives a continuous control. if the increase in the level of the hydrated lime added is enough to increase the pulp ph level to values above 10,5, the ca2+ cations start to act as coagulants, therefore promoting a negative effect over its own performance, affecting the flotation process and making it difficult to obtain the specified sio2 levels in the concentrate.

Abstract: This paper investigates the determinants of performance of the investments of private equity and venture capital (PEVC) funds in Brazil. We use two unique databases: the First Brazilian Private Equity and Venture Capital Census and the Guia-GVcepe Endeavor, with information on this industry for the period 1999 to 2007. As measures of performance we use the percentage and number of exits through IPO, acquisition by a company or by another investor. Our results indicate that the factors influencing the performance of investments are: size of the fund, number of investments, the practice of co-investment, experience and foreign origin of the managing organization, focus on late stage, intensity of contact between managers and portfolio companies and the number of seats on the boards of the invested companies. The number of successes grows with the number of investments at a declining rate. This can indicate 1) a limit to the ability of managers or 2) that a large number of investments allows for greater diversification of risk, directing investments to companies of high risk but with a high upside.

Abstract: grazing behaviour, ponderal growth and level of parasitic infestation were studied in suffolk breed sheep, from 1994 to 1995, in nova odessa, s?o paulo. two management systems were compared: restricted grazing, where the animals were released to the pastures at 9:50 a.m. and confined at 5:30 p.m., and 24 hour grazing, where the animals were maintained all the time in the paddocks, but with access to shelters. thirty-four adult ewes were used in the summer period (17 under restricted grazing and 17 full-time grazing), and 42 ewes in the winter period (21 with restricted grazing and 21 full-time grazing). also, for both seasons, 12 tracer animals, six in each grazing system, were used to obtain worm counts from their digestive tracts. for three consecutive days, grazing behaviour, that is, whether grazing or not, was observed in january/february (summer) and july/august (winter) at 30 minute intervals from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., also whether the animals stayed in the sun or shade, irrespective of whether they were grazing or not. the level of parasitic infestation was evaluated under each system by eggs per gram countings (epg) of the herd and the tracer animals, as well as by larvae count. it was concluded that restriction of grazing time by itself does not provide any effective control of parasitic infestation in sheep, however a better control was obtained in the summer period. restricted grazing time was compensated by the greater activity of the animals during the hotter hours of the day, however, this behaviour affected the animal performance, resulting in lower weight gains. greater forage availability in relation to estimated consumption may explain the similarity between the grazing times observed in both management systems, either in the summer or in the winter.

Abstract: one of the great current challenges of agricultural research is the production of improved castor bean cultivars, with genetic stability, high quality and high yielding potential. the objective this work was to estimate genotypic, phenotypic and environmental correlations among traits of the castor bean plant to make the characterization of the accessions easy. they were evaluated in lavras, mg, brazil, in a randomized block design with three replicates, fifteen castor bean accessions. the traits evaluated were: plant height, stem height, number of nodes, stem diameter, final number of clusters, stand and 100-seed weight. it was observed that there was a positive phenotypic correlation of the node number and stem height, stem height and plant height, plant height and stem diameter and at last between stem diameter and 100-seed weight. there was also a positive environmental correlation among the correlations stem height and plant height, plant height and stem diameter, plant height and final stand and stem diameter and number of clusters, concluding that the estimated correlations make it possible to know the associations among the traits, giving important information to the establishment of a genetic improvement plan of castor bean from the accessions evaluated.
