Abstract: Background: Several population studies have shown that patients with neural tube defects (NTD), have a higher frequency of a genetic mutation related with thermolability of the enzyme 5,10-metylentetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). There are regional and ethnic variations in the genotypic or allelic frequency of this mutation and its possible relationship with NTD and others congenital anomalies. Aim: To estimate the frequency of the C677T polymorphism of MTHFR in control women and mothers of spina bifida cases. Patients and Methods: We analyzed 58 blood samples from mothers who had a child diagnosed with spina bifida. A group of 184 healthy mothers matched by age and with no NTD offspring served as controls. We determined the C677T polymorphism on the MTHFR gene by means of PCR and the analysis of the digestion pattern of HinfI restriction enzyme. Results: The genotypic frequencies showed concordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, in controls (p=0.35), and in mothers of the cases (p=0.95). The odds ratio to the TT genotype compared with the CC genotype (reference category) was estimated as 1.54 (IC 95%: 0,66-3,61), while the odds ratio for the TC genotype compared with CC genotype was 1.06 (IC 95%: 0,48-2,33). Conclusion: No differences in the C677T polymorphism of the MTHFR were observed between mothers who had a child diagnosed with spina bifida and control mothers (Rev Méd Chile 2003; 131: 1399-404).

Abstract: objective: to describe the recruitment of patients, assessment instruments, implementation, methods and preliminary results of the brazilian research consortium on obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, which includes seven university sites. method: this cross-sectional study included a comprehensive clinical assessment including semi-structured interviews (sociodemographic data, medical and psychiatric history, disease course and comorbid psychiatric diagnoses), and instruments to assess obsessive-compulsive (yale-brown obsessive-compulsive scale and dimensional yale-brown obsessive-compulsive scale), depressive (beck depression inventory) and anxious (beck anxiety inventory) symptoms, sensory phenomena (universidade de s?o paulo sensory phenomena scale), insight (brown assessment beliefs scale), tics (yale global tics severity scale) and quality of life (medical outcome quality of life scale short-form-36 and social assessment scale). the raters' training consisted of watching at least five videotaped interviews and interviewing five patients with an expert researcher before interviewing patients alone. the reliability between all leaders for the most important instruments (structured clinical interview for dsm-iv, dimensional yale-brown obsessive-compulsive scale, universidade de s?o paulo sensory phenomena scale) was measured after six complete interviews. results: inter-rater reliability was 96%. by march 2008, 630 obsessive-compulsive disorder patients had been systematically evaluated. mean age (±se) was 34.7 (±0.51), 56.3% were female, and 84.6% caucasian. the most prevalent obsessive compulsive symptom dimensions were symmetry and contamination. the most common comorbidities were major depression, generalized anxiety and social anxiety disorder. the most common dsm-iv impulsive control disorder was skin picking. conclusion: the sample was composed mainly by caucasian individuals, unmarried, with some kind of occupational activity, mean age of 35 years, on

Abstract: background: ample use of serological markers of high sensitivity and specificity led to relevant changes in the epidemiology of celiac disease. the impact of these changes in our country is poorly known. aim: to assess the diagnostic procedures, clinical presentations and follow up of celiac disease as conducted in current pediatric practice. material and methods: a multicentric retrospective study of patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2005 in five pediatric hospitals in santiago, chile. data was obtained from clinical records, recorded in electronic spreadsheets and analyzed by descriptive statistics. results: seventy four of 83 identified patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. mean time to reach the diagnosis was 2.1 years. cases younger than 10 years presented digestive manifestations such as chronic diarrhea and abdominal distension. twenty one percent of older patients had atypical presentations (mainly short stature, refractory anaemia). ten percent of cases were screened because a first degree relative had celiac disease. all patients had significant duodenal/jejunal lesion. iga-antiendomysial antibodies (n =65) and iga-antigliadin antibodies (n =23) were the most commonly used screening tests used but often, they were not available for follow up. a second biopsy was planned in all patients but only 26 had it due to repeated dietary transgressions, often due to unnoticed consumption of gluten in poorly labeled products. conclusions: digestive manifestations were the main presentation form for celiac disease among patients under 10 years of age. atypical symptoms become relevant in patients older than 10 years. antiendomysial and antitransglutaminase antibody measurement should be incorporated for routine screening and follow up of celiac disease in public hospitals. to improve food labeling about their gluten content is needed

Abstract: Natural and anthropogenic factors are responsible for changes in wetland function and structure. This research deals with the complexity of interactions among flood attributes, climatic data and land use trajectories to track the impact of land use changes for wetland management, over 30 years (1984- 2014). This paper presents a multi-temporal analysis of a floodplain to know the inter-annual ecohydrological variability, including extraordinary events of floods and droughts, using indicators of hydrological regime. It also presents a quantitative description of the geospatial variability in the Mogi Guaçu wetland components to assess the changes in the conversion, replacement, of wetland landscapes by anthropic growth activities. Flood attributes and anthropogenic pressures have altered temporal habitat variability in changes on the river course, in sandbars extent, and oxbow lake genesis and extinction, with a decline in the biota dependent on these habitats. These results have significant implications of the quick expansion of anthropogenic activities and provide key information about the impact of land use changes on the wetland function and structure. It is an objective tool to help the environmental management of wetland areas.

This paper centers on the contributions offered by the paradigm of cyberculture and the Web 2.0 to propositions relating to the evaluation of student learning, in particular online learning. The paper targets the advances and limitations of current practices in online education, then proposing their expansion to encompass students’ browsing and their learning process in cyberspace. It is argued that such activities reach beyond the limits of the virtual learning environment and are related to the new practices of interaction, collaboration, co-authoring and creative appropriation experienced by many students. New forms of evaluation allow for assigning value to these activities and raising the quality of learning processes.

Many discussions were made about the theology and its place in a university. This paper aims to be a contribution for this matter, orientated by John Henry Newman. Excluding the theology from the university we take away its scientific claracter.
