Abstract: the commitment of immune system, which may be presented by individuals with chronic diseases, leading to a low immune response. one of the treatments used for acute injuries in tendons is the low-power laser, however there is a gap in relation to its use in immunosuppression. the objective of this study was to analyze if low-level laser therapy is effective for the treatment of pain in immunosuppressed rats subjected to trauma tendon. we used 23 male rats of wistar strain, divided randomly in three groups: control group, placebo and laser. the animals were immunosuppressed (by administration of cyclosporin a) and underwent right achilles tendon injury, with impact of about 0.40 j. for treatment, we used low-level laser, 670 nm, 30 mw and 2 j/cm2, during 3 days. pain assessment was performed by the functional incapacitation test and von frey filament digital. the results showed a reduction of functional pain and pressure pain on the plantar surface and the injured site (right achilles tendon) for the laser group. therefore, we concluded that the low-power laser is effective for reducing pain in immunosuppressed rats subjected to trauma tendon.
A biblioteca e os seus públicos: uma proposta interpretativa
Rodrigues,Eduardo Alexandre;
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas , 2007,
Abstract: this essay presents a sociological interpretation of the "publics"/audiences of a public library which is part of the portuguese network of public libraries. the data obtained and the interpretations drawn from it in are put in the double framework of the sociology of culture and the sociology of social classes, particular emphasis being given to recent approaches of the so-called cultural "publics"/audiences. the analyses carried out also help to understand how the general objectives and missions of the portuguese public network are carried out in a specific library. particular importance is given to the analysis of the impacts of those missions and objectives on the social properties and the diverse modes of relationship with the library that characterize the people who use it.
Neural and Cognitive Markers and Regulation of Emotion in Depression: A Mini-Review and a Short Case Report  [PDF]

Open Journal of Psychiatry (OJPsych) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojpsych.2017.74030
Abstract: In the presented short clinical case of depression, the constructs of Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) of loss (negative valence systems) and cognitive control (cognitive systems) have been operationalized. It has been concluded that a normal cognitive control of emotion, requiring the functional and structural integrity of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), is lacking in depression, but its amelioration can be achieved through the implementation of cognitive remediation/rehabilitation programs. A mini-review on neural and cognitive markers and regulation of emotion in depression is previously presented.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2011000400008
Abstract: objective: 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme a (hmg-coa) reductase inhibitors, or statins, have been associated with improved clinical outcomes after ischemic stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage, but with an increased risk of incidental spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ich). we investigated whether the statin use before ich, was associated with functional independence, 90 days after treatment. method: we analyzed 124 consecutive ich patients with 90-day outcome data who were enrolled in a prospective cohort study between 2006 and 2009. eighty-three patients were included in this study. among ich survivors, univariate cox regression models and kaplan-meier plots were used to determine subject characteristics that were associated with an increased risk of recurrence. statin usage was determined through interviewing the patient at the time of ich and confirmed by reviewing their medical records. independent status was defined as glasgow outcome scale grades 4 or 5. results: statins were used by 20 out of 83 patients (24%) before ich onset. there was no effect from pre-ich statin use on functional independence rates (28% versus 29%, p=0.84) or mortality (46% versus 45%, p=0.93). conclusion: pre-ich statin use is not associated with changes to ich functional outcome or mortality.
Serum C-reactive protein levels predict neurological outcome after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
Romero, Flávio Ramalho;Bertolini, Eduardo de Freitas;Figueiredo, Eberval G.;Teixeira, Manoel Jacobsen;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2012000300009
Abstract: objectives: our aim was to evaluate the relationship between serum c-reactive protein (crp) levels and the neurological prognosis and development of vasospasm in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (asah). methods: eighty-two adult patients with asah diagnoses were prospectively evaluated. glasgow coma scale (gcs) score, hunt and hess grade, fisher grade, cranial ct scans, digital subtraction angiography studies and daily neurological examinations were recorded. serial serum crp measurements were obtained daily between admission and the tenth day. glasgow outcome scale (gos) and the modified rankin scale (mrs) were used to assess the prognosis. results: serum crp levels were related to severity of asah. patients with lower gcs scores and higher hunt and hess and fisher grades presented statistically significant higher serum crp levels. patients with higher serum crp levels had a less favorable prognosis. conclusions: increased serum crp levels were strongly associated with worse clinical prognosis in this study.
Compress?o da cartilagem cricóide: aspectos atuais
Moro, Eduardo Toshiyuki;Goulart, Alexandre;
Revista Brasileira de Anestesiologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-70942008000600010
Abstract: background and objectives: sellick described the importance of applying pressure in the cricoid cartilage during anesthesia induction to prevent regurgitation of gastric contents. since then, the maneuver has been widely accepted by anesthesiologists as a fundamental step during induction with the rapid sequence technique. the objective of the present report was to discuss the indications, technique, complications, and reasons why some authors have refuted the efficacy of this technique. contents: the indications, technique, and complications of compression of the cricoid cartilage were reviewed. the aspects that have motivated some authors to abandon the sellick maneuver during anesthetic induction with the rapid sequence technique are also discussed. conclusions: the cricoid cartilage pressure maneuver requires knowledge of the anatomy of upper airways and the correct force to be used. endoscopic and radiologic studies, as well as patients who developed pulmonary aspiration despite the use of sellick maneuver, have raised doubts about the usefulness of this technique. besides, can cause deformity of the cricoid cartilage, closure of the vocal cords, and difficulty to ventilate if it is not used properly. despite the importance given to sellick maneuver in preventing pulmonary aspiration, there are no guarantees it will protect the airways of all patients, especially when the technique is not properly used.
Campylorhamphus procurvoides successor (Aves: Dendrocolaptidae) is a junior synonym of Campylorhamphus trochilirostris notabilis
Portes, Carlos Eduardo;Aleixo, Alexandre;
Zoologia (Curitiba) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-46702009000300019
Abstract: the taxonomy of the genus campylorhamphus bertoni, 1901 is still uncertain, with many inconsistent evolutionary patterns implied by current taxonomy. a re-analysis of the type-series of campylorhamphus procurvoides successor todd, 1948 revealed that the holotype is indistinguishable from campylorhamphus trochilirostris notabilis zimmer, 1934, while the paratypes belonged either to the latter taxon or to a second already named taxon (campylorhamphus trochilirostris snethlageae zimmer, 1934), and a third and yet undescribed taxon allied to campylorhamphus procurvoides. here, we present statistical analyses of morphological data supporting the synonymization of c. p. successor into c. t. notabilis, the name with priority. our findings resolve the long-standing controversy related to the distribution of campylorhamphus procurvoides populations in the várzea habitats of the lower amazon river.

Abstract: The in vitro production of bovine embryos by in vitro fertilization or nuclear transfer procedures is a powerful tool in wide use for scientific, conservationist and commercial purposes. However, developmental abnormalities are unpredictable consequences of such in vitro embryo manipulations, which may interfere with the pattern of fetal and placental growth and life ex utero, in a set of symptoms collectively called Large Offspring Syndrome (LOS). The economical significance of the syndrome is associated with increased rates of pregnancy losses, placental and fetal aberrations that culminate in abortion, hydrops of the fetal membranes, prolonged gestation, diminished signs of parturition, dystocia, and birth of large calves with lower postnatal survival. Lower pregnancy rates with higher gestational and postnatal losses represent significant economical losses for a lower prolificacy. The understanding of mechanisms of prenatal growth in normal development and in those related to the syndrome will be of significance for prevention or attenuation of abnormalities of common occurrence in cattle, with potential direct scientific and economical implications.
