Abstract:

Lasioderma serricorne is known to be pest of tobacco, besides of attacking other products in storage. Anisopteromalus calandrae is an ectoparasitoid of coleopteran larvae also parasitizing the tobacco beetle. This study was aimed to evaluate the parasitism of A. calandrae on different densities of L. serricorne larvae grown in different diets and photoperiods, and to record the longevity and reproductive potential of A. calandrae. Individuals of L. serricorne were raised in three diets: wheat flour (F); wheat flour and brewer’s yeast (FY) and wheat flour and dried tobacco (FT). Different amounts of host larvae (10, 20, 50 and 100) for each diet were exposed to a couple of parasitoids. The same larval densities from diet F were exposed for 24 h to a couple of adult parasitoids maintained in three photoperiods (0:24, 12:12 and 24:0 - scotophase: photophase). The highest values of apparent parasitism were in the density of 50 larvae in the FY diet (96.34%) and 100 F (92.91%). There was no significant difference in the parameters in each photoperiod in all larval densities. However, the treatment in which hosts and parasitoids always remained in scotophase, was the one that had a significantly higher sex ratio. Females had longer longevity than males surviving for up to 25 days. On the fourth day of larvae exposure occurred, the maximum number of offspring generated. It is inferred that A. calandrae has potential to be used as a control agent for coleopterans that attack stored products.

Abstract: This study assessed the chronic effects of physical exercise on the level of DNA damage and the susceptibility to exogenous mutagens in peripheral blood cells of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The case-control study enrolled COPD patients separated into two groups (group of physical exercise (PE-COPD; ); group of nonphysical exercise (COPD; )) and 51 controls. Peripheral blood was used to evaluate DNA damage by comet assay and lipid peroxidation by measurement of thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS). The cytogenetic damage was evaluated by the buccal micronucleus cytome assay. The results showed that the TBARS values were significantly lower in PE-COPD than in COPD group. The residual DNA damage (induced by methyl methanesulphonate alkylating agent) in PE-COPD was similar to the controls group, in contrast to COPD group where it was significantly elevated. COPD group showed elevated frequency of nuclear buds (BUD) and condensed chromatin (CC) in relation to PE-COPD and control groups, which could indicate a deficiency in DNA repair and early apoptosis of the damaged cells. We concluded that the physical exercise for COPD patients leads to significant decrease of lipid peroxidation in blood plasma, decrease of susceptibility to exogenous mutagenic, and better efficiency in DNA repair. 1. Introduction The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in countries with different levels of economic development, and it is estimated that in 2020 the COPD will become the third leading cause of death all over the world [1, 2]. COPD is currently defined as a preventable and treatable disease characterized by airflow limitation, resulting from an abnormal inflammatory reaction to inhaled particles from cigarette smoking and associated with comorbidities [2]. The COPD is multifactorial and its pathology often includes systemic inflammation and oxidative stress [3, 4]. The formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by cigarette smoke and inflammatory cells, generated in the pulmonary epithelium, has been associated with slowly progressive and irreversible decrease in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), loss of muscle mass, and muscle dysfunction [3, 4, 11] and probably modulates some of the systemic effects of COPD (i.e., skeletal muscles atrophy, osteoporosis, anemia, and cachexia [11, 12]). Some of the many different compounds in cigarette smoke can react directly with cellular components to form ROS while other carcinogens must be activated to produce single- and double-strand

Abstract: the article deals with the construction of discourse objects in scientific popularization reports for children and aims to examine the production of meanings about science themes in the anaphoric registrations which start from daily themes to culminate in specialized expressions. semantic-pragmatic aspects of the anaphora operated by the text producer in order to inform/explain and captivate the child reader are observed. the corpus is composed by seven reports published in the magazine ciência hoje das crian?as, which were selected by being a hyperstructure. the principles relative to the communication contract of science médiatisation postulated by charaudeau (2008b), the notions of schematization and cultural pre-constructs (grize, 1990, 1996), the notion of hyperstructure (adam & lugrin, 2000; 2006) and the studies about discursive referenciation (mondada, 2002) are the theoretical bases of this study. the recurrence in the engendering of intelligible schemes for the child reader, via co-construction of the anaphora - which, categorized in the hyperestructure instances, reveal mise en scène strategies -, was verified.

Abstract: the purpose of this paper is to understand and analyse the contents of the social representations about the rural school in the middle of the twentieth century in portugal, in the dimensions of "information" and "attitudes", produced by a group of persons born between 1926 and 1936 and who attended school in a village, in the municipality of ferreira do zêzere, not going beyond the four years of the elementary school. the research focuses a qualitative exploratory research, using as a conceptual and methodological framing the social representations theory, in particular the study of the school representation anchorage until the fourth decade of the twentieth century, depending on the mental picture/ representation of the school of today and taking as a basis of analysis the discursive contents of this group of elderly people. in conclusion: these people, after selection, construction and organization of the information and attitude, built up their school social representations, that have been expressed in homogeneous and heterogeneous contents at information level, revealing different social insertions in terms of social identities. these aspects have been articulated with different ways of life, different ways of relationship with the school, and also due to the fact that this is a period that is far away from now in about half a century.
"ábrase esta rueda, vuélvase a cerrar": La construcción de la identidad mediante el canto de coplas

Abstract: in the province of san salvador de jujuy, more precisely in the quebrada de humahuaca and the puna regions, the cult of copla singing is a phenomenon still alive among the social practices of native communities. this work aims at analyzing the function of copla singing in the identity build up of its performers, concerning both the individual dimension where the copla singer is set apart as a subject with a specific social role, as well as the collective projection that singer and song shed onto their community. two cult tinted festivities become the subject matter of our study: the "encuentro de copleros" celebrated annually in purmamarca during the first days of january and the "topamiento de comadres" which takes place on the thursday before carnival celebrations. on both occasions copla performer circles are organized. these circles constitute true scenarios for the formation and circulation of figurative processes, through which the subject constructs himself as such and also forms a world -view. in circles, a central role is played by the performer's voice and body, elements mentioned in a subgroup of coplas dealing with the singing, singer and performance. this presentation analyzes the ritual celebration of copla performer circles from a semiotic perspective, establishing discursive relationships with the texts registered during the already mentioned festivities.
Feminidad y monstruosidad en el imaginario social: una lectura y dos textos
Mirande,María Eduarda;
Cuadernos de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales. Universidad Nacional de Jujuy , 2002,
Abstract: the concept of de feminine, its consequent valuations and processes o symbolization fill a significant place in the shaping of the structure of the collective social mind at all times and in all societies. the present work tries to visualise two texts wich, though distant in time, converge in the way they present the problem of the feminine in discourse. one the one hand, we analyse two episodes from the libro de buen amor by the arcipreste de hita, a spanish text from the xiv century; and on the other hand, some versions of the "mulánima", collected in san salvador de jujuy in 1997. both texts present the image of the woman by resorting to the figure of a monster. in the first text, a woman from the highlands, half beast, half human, saves a lost gentleman from sure death in exchange from money; in the "mulánima" versions, the adulterous woman, after dying, turns into an awful looking mule as a result of the condemnation of her soul. the question that arises turns around the depply significant issues presented by the figure of the deformed feminine body and a feminity drawn upon and begotten by monstrosity. this question is the guideline that orientates our thinking, and it is our intention to find an answer to it through the present work.
