Single-Phase Velocity Determination Based in Video and Sub-Images Processing: An Optical Flow Method Implemented with Support of a Programmed MatLab Structured Script  [PDF]

Abstract: Important in many different sectors of the industry, the determination of stream velocity has become more and more important due to measurements precision necessity, in order to determine the right production rates, determine the volumetric production of undesired fluid, establish automated controls based on these measurements avoiding over-flooding or over-production, guaranteeing accurate predictive maintenance, etc. Difficulties being faced have been the determination of the velocity of specific fluids embedded in some others, for example, determining the gas bubbles stream velocity flowing throughout liquid fluid phase. Although different and already applicable methods have been researched and already implemented within the industry, a non-intrusive automated way of providing those stream velocities has its importance, and may have a huge impact in projects budget. Knowing the importance of its determination, this developed script uses a methodology of breaking-down real-time videos media into frame images, analyzing by pixel correlations possible superposition matches for further gas bubbles stream velocity estimation. In raw sense, the script bases itself in functions and procedures already available in MatLab, which can be used for image processing and treatments, allowing the methodology to be implemented. Its accuracy after the running test was of around 97% (ninety-seven percent); the raw source code with comments had almost 3000 (three thousand) characters; and the hardware placed for running the code was an Intel Core Duo 2.13 [Ghz] and 2 [Gb] RAM memory capable workstation. Even showing good results, it could be stated that just the end point correlations were actually getting to the final solution. So that, making use of self-learning functions or neural network, one could surely enhance the capability of the application to be run in real-time without getting exhaust by iterative loops.
Financial risk monitoring and transaction costs in coffee & soybean trading companies and processors

Abstract: this study characterizes the use of risk monitoring mechanisms by coffee and soybean trading and processing companies. it also investigates the role these mechanisms play in the mitigation of certain transaction costs associated to bounded rationality, information asymmetry, and business opportunism in negotiations involving derivatives. the results presented are based on literature and original research, which consisted of interviews with 19 coffee and soybean trading and processing company agents that deal with the management and execution of derivatives trades. the interviews suggest that the interest in formal risk monitoring mechanisms depends strongly on the organizational structure of the business. in family businesses, in which the owner participates actively in negotiations, the interest is limited. in non-family businesses, where there is a clear separation between supervisory upper-management and agents involved with trading, the interest in risk monitoring systems is more evident. this result seems to indicate that the mitigation of transaction costs associated with information asymmetry and opportunism might be stronger motivations for interest in risk monitoring mechanisms than the costs resulting from bounded rationality.

Abstract: We introduce and discuss the concept of Gaussian probability density function (pdf) for the n-dimensional hyperbolic space which has been proposed as an environment for coding and decoding signals. An upper bound for the error probability of signal transmission associated with the hyperbolic distance is established. The pdf and the upper bound were developed using Poincare models for the hyperbolic spaces.

Abstract: creativity and mental image are important human beings characteristics and can be observed in the behavior of different people. a great number of researchers has studied creativity and mental image in order to set up the origin and process of both. this article focuses on creativity and mental image main theories contribution and discusses how it is possible to assess creativity learning by using a pedagogic workshop in a technical school. this workshop intended to observe how creativity can be improved by these technical school students. the results showed that the educational process must pay attention to the students' development in order to provide creativity and mental image learning.

Abstract: autoclave molding produces polymer composites, where the processing conditions can be optimized with physicochemical knowledge of the polymeric matrix. the cure reaction evolves simultaneously with changes in rheology, which is normally refered to as rheo-kinetic behavior. with the knowledge of the appropriate cure cycle one can identify the steps in which pressure should be applied and when to raise the temperature. this paper is aimed at investigating the cure, kinetics and rheological parameters of three prepreg epoxy systems, namely f161, f584 and 8552, which are currently used in the brazilian aeronautic industry. differential scanning calorimetry (dsc) and rheological techniques have been used, both in the isothermal and dynamic modes. kinetics data were obtained from dynamic and isothermal dsc, with rheological measurements being carried out during the cure. the mathematical models used were the nth order reaction model and the autocatalytic model with order of 2. the gel temperature was ~100 °c, and the corresponding gelification time was 135 s. with the determination of the kinetics for the cure and of the rheological parameters of the prepreg systems, a cure cycle should be established that led to high-performance composites using the autoclave molding.

Abstract: advanced thermoplastic composites are an alternative to thermoset composites in many aeronautical applications owing to their superior properties. among the thermoplastic matrix, pps (poly phenylene sulfide) stands out due to its structural characteristics. the objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of environmental conditioning on the shear behavior of pps / carbon fiber composites. samples of this material have been conditioned in saline water solution, in hygrothermal conditioning and under uv radiation. after conditionings the specimens were evaluated by interlaminar shear strength (ilss) and iosipescu shear test methods. the environmental conditioning reduced the interlaminar shear stress (ilss) of conditioned composites in comparison with non-conditioned composites tested with the same method (58.4 ± 1.9 mpa). the ilss decreased by ca. 14 and 3%, respectively, after hygrothermal conditioning and saline water solution. moreover, the values of interlaminar shear stress under uv radiation decreased by 2, 11 and 9% after exposure times of 300, 600 and 900 hours, respectively. the non-conditioned composites tested with the iosipescu method (109.2 ± 0.4 mpa ) also had ilss decreasing with environmental conditioning: the values decreased 6% after hygrothermal conditioning and 12% after saline water solution. the uv radiation exposure led to a decrease of 6, 10 and 14% following exposures during 300, 600 and 900 hours, respectively.

Population Dynamics of Large Herbivores and the Framing of Wildlife Conservation in Zimbabwe  [PDF]

Abstract:

This article reviews: 1) The role of natural and human-induced controls in influencing large herbivore populations; 2) how human controls (i.e., policy instruments, incentives and provisions) influence human activities and wildlife conservation; and 3) media framing of wildlife conservation using Zimbabwe as a case study, in particular Gonarezhou National Park and adjacent areas. The review shows that droughts are important in influencing large herbivore populations in semi-arid ecosystems; political instability and economic collapse does not necessarily lead to increased illegal hunting in situations where policy instruments, such as laws, are enforced. A higher perceived effectiveness of Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources was partly associated with a decline in human-wildlife conflicts and there was a spill-over effect of frames from the political domain into wildlife conservation following Zimbabwe’s land reforms in 2000. It is concluded that natural bottom-up processes (e.g., droughts) influence large herbivore population dynamics whereas policy instruments, incentives, provisions and societal frames mainly have a top-down effect on wild large herbivore populations in savanna ecosystems.

Abstract: thermoplastic composite parts were produced by the hot press compression molding process with three different thermal cycles, which were evaluated employing the material comparative analysis, before and after the manufacturing of parts. the properties of laminates and parts were evaluated by visual inspection, presence of voids or delamination by using optical microscopy, degree of crystallinity (doc) utilizing dsc technique and mechanical properties making use of the flexural test. the results showed no delamination or voids. however, when the coldest mold was used (100 °c), the mechanical properties decreased up to 25% and a significant difference of doc was observed from the part surfaces in contact with the mold (13%) to its centre (21%). this did not occur with the other processing conditions (molds at 170 and 210 °c), which exhibited docs around 20%.
