Abstract: reflection on education in the 21th century with special attention on librarians' education. it emphasizes the four basic points, praised by unesco, to a new concept of education: to learn to know, to learn to live together, to learn to do and to learn to be. it presents the points developed by morin, for unesco, that will be able to improve the education of the future. on the bases of such points examine the role of librarians education in 21th century. the educators' dilemas in these times are centered in three questions: what to teach? how to teach? and why to teach? it suggests that the librarianship curricula must privilegie librarians' educative role and that this role must be founded in a set of values in order to modify perceptions, and emphasize cooperation in detriment of technology. the paper concludes that the most important function of librarians in 21th century will be the one of information managers.

Abstract: this research attempted to verify the use of internet in information search processes in scientific communities, aiming to detect the occurrence of information disintermediation and its consequences on scientific community process and information as well as its consequences on scientific communication process and performance on the information unit. in this research, disintermediation was considered as absence of intermediates between the information resources and researchers. a sample of 324 researchers/teaching staff of the federal university of santa catarina, linked to graduate programs was used and sorted by: random and stratified by area of knowledge, random and simple, by capes evaluation grades, and random and conglomerated by the graduate program. a questionnaire was used as the tool for collecting data with questions for the survey of sociodemographic and resource use information. the data were organized using the spss statistics package version 11.0 using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages), association statistics (c2 test), and comparative statistics (kruskal-wallis and mann-whitney test), at p=0.05. the analyses of the results allowed to confirm that pathways preferred by researchers in the search for information were: private library, 46.3%, and internet, 43.2%. among the resources available at the ul/ufsc system the journal was the one most indicated by researchers. a preference for materials in electronic format was also indicated due to the easier accessibility. in relation to the mediators in the process of information search, colleagues/pairs were the most indicated. electronic mail was the most used internet resource. this also confirms the use of network where the communication between pairs, with 65.4%, was the indication with the highest frequency. among the available online services at ul/ufsc, capes gateway was the most indicated (61.7%). as for the disintermediation process, since it has increased in all areas because resea

Abstract: echovirus (echo) 30 or human enterovirus b is the most frequent enterovirus associated with meningitis cases. epidemics and outbreaks of this disease caused by echo 30 have occurred in several countries. in brazil, echo 30 has been isolated from sporadic cases and outbreaks that occurred mainly in the south and southeast regions. we used rt-pcr to examine echo 30 isolates from meningitis cases detected from march 2002 to december 2003 in belém, state of pará, in northern brazil. the patients were attended in a basic health unit (state health secretary of pará), where cerebrospinal fluid (csf) was collected and stored in liquid nitrogen. weekly visits were made by technicians from evandro chagas institute to the health unit and samples were stored at -70oc in the laboratory until use. hep-2 and rd cell lines were used for viral isolation and neutralization with specific antisera for viral identification. rna extraction was made using trizol reagent. the rt-pcr was made in one step, and the total mixture (50 μl) was composed of: rna, reaction buffer, dntp, primers, rnase inhibitor, reverse transcriptase, taq polymerase and water. the products were visualized in agarose gel stained with ethidium bromide, visualized under uv light. among the 279 csf samples examined, 30 (10.7%) were ev positive, 29 being echo 30 and one was cox b. nineteen echo 30 were examined with rt-pcr; 18 tested positive (762 and 494 base pairs). the use of this technique permitted viral identification in less time than usual, which benefits the patient and is of importance for public-health interventions.

Abstract: this study aimed to discuss the use of the variable of race/color as a determining factor for social inequalities and social exposure to the risk of illness and death. this was a reflection on the present production of national and international literature within the field of public health and epidemiology. forty-seven original articles and reviews produced between 1990 and 2005 were included in this study. it was observed that international studies have sought to debate and find a basis for using the variable of race/color within the healthcare field. in brazil, the use of this variable is still at an initial stage, but among the few investigations undertaken, differentials have been shown and further production of research along these lines has been encouraged. investigations on the role of race/color in producing health differentials may produce information capable of contributing towards drawing up policies aimed at reducing healthcare inequalities.
