Abstract: objective: mometasone furoate (mf) is a new, potent synthetic inhaled corticosteroid. worldwide, mf is administered via a dry-powder inhaler that contains multiple doses. as a preparation that would be more cost-effective, single-dose mf capsules were developed in brazil. the objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the two inhalers for mf administration in patients with asthma. methods: a randomized, multicenter, open-label, parallel-group clinical trial involving 74 adult patients with moderate, persistent asthma who were randomized into two groups to receive approximately 400 μg of mf once a day for 60 days, either via the multiple-dose inhaler or via the newly developed single-dose inhaler. results: no significant differences were observed between the two groups regarding the primary endpoints (fev1 and rescue medication use) or the secondary endpoints (morning pef, tolerability, and safety, the last as assessed on the basis of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function). conclusions: the use of the single-dose inhaler developed in brazil for mf administration is as effective and safe as is that of a standard inhaler in the treatment of patients with asthma.

Abstract: Inability to clearly defend against the criticisms of frequentist methods has turned many a frequentist away from venturing into foundational battlegrounds. Conceding the distorted perspectives drawn from overly literal and radical expositions of what Fisher, Neyman, and Pearson 'really thought', some deny they matter to current practice. The goal of this paper is not merely to call attention to the howlers that pass as legitimate criticisms of frequentist error statistics, but also to sketch the main lines of an alternative statistical philosophy within which to better articulate the roles and value of frequentist tools.

Computer Science , 2014,
Abstract: Sentiment analysis of Twitter data is performed. The researcher has made the following contributions via this paper: (1) an innovative method for deriving sentiment score dictionaries using an existing sentiment dictionary as seed words is explored, and (2) an analysis of clustered tweet sentiment scores based on tweet length is performed.
Heart transplants for patients with Chagas' heart disease
Bocchi, Edimar Alcides;
Sao Paulo Medical Journal , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-31801995000200021
Abstract: the role of heart transplants for treating chagas' heart disease is not quite clear. immunosuppression could lead to resurgence of t. cruzi infection with acute or chronic damage to the allograft. there are few publications regarding this issue. thus we reported the follow-up of 18-patients with chagas' heart disease submitted to orthotopic heart transplants from 1985 to 1993 at the heart institute. the patients were in functional class iv or iii, or ii, with sustained ventricular tachycardia episodes. the mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 25 ± 9% and the mean right ventricular ejection was 22 ± 6% (muga). immunosuppression was based on cyclosporin, azathioprine and corticosteroids. for specific post-transplant monitoring of t. cruzi infection, blood tests were performed (examination of blood or leukocyte concentrate, giemsa-stained blood smears, blood culture, xenodiagnosis, mouse inoculation) and tissue biopsy (skin or myocardium). in addition, complement fixation hemagglutination and immunofluorescence assays were performed. t. cruzi parasitemias were detected in 18 circumstances in 13 patients. resurgence of chagas' disease was diagnosed in 11 circumstances in 5 patients. fever, subcutaneous nodules and myocarditis predominated in these episodes. all episodes of parasitemia and chagas' disease resurgence were successfully treated with benzonidazole. all surviving patients had normal cardiac function despite left ventricular function worsening during some myocarditis episodes. neoplasias were important findings and 3 patients developed lymphoproliferative disease, 2 developed karposi's sarcoma and 1 patient developed skin cancer. the survival rates at 4 and 12 months were 83% and 49% respectively. the survival of patients who underwent heart transplants from august 1991 to april 1993 was 100% at 4 months and 75% at 12 months. heart transplants for chagas' heart disease may be associated with episodes of parasitemia and a reoccurrence of episodes of chag

This study deals with the history of rural education in the period from 1940 to 2009, from the memory of ten teachers who worked in multigrade classes in the public educational system in Lomba Grande, a region in the city of Novo Hamburgo/RS, Brazil. Memories are analyzed from the perspective of "social time", when memory allows individuals to take their places in the network of social relations that are part of this context, involving collective memories of thisgroup of subjects, whose memory allows us to understand the process ofincorporation and choice of teaching, especially the aspect of training to become a teacher. The research is qualitative and uses the methodology of Oral History, with semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. The theoretical framework rests on the perspective of Cultural History. The analysis emphasizes the size of memory in constituting teaching in multigrade classes and their relation to the representation of teaching as a cultural practice. In the set of analysis, strategies constructed in the schooling process, the conduction of supplementary courses, forms of entry into the municipal public teaching service and in-service training are highlighted.
