OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of conservative treatment of trigger thumb in children, in order to discuss the real need for surgical release in these patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on a group of children with trigger thumb who were treated conservatively by the same orthopedic surgeon with gentle manipulation at the time of the consultation and guidance on stretching to be performed at home. The cases were followed up for at least five years. RESULTS: Thirteen thumbs in 11 children (seven boys and four girls) were treated. The mean age at the first consultation was 26.3 months (range: 11 to 36 months). The mean follow-up was 10 years (range: 5 to 16 years). Ten thumbs showed satisfactory results (77%): eight of these were diagnosed when the child was younger than two years of age. The mean time taken from diagnosis to clinical improvement was 20.8 months (range: 6 to 36 months). The three thumbs that required surgical treatment were diagnosed after the age of two years and six months. CONCLUSIONS: Conservative treatment of trigger thumb in children showed a high rate of success, especially in children who were diagnosed up to the age of two years. This is important information to be passe

Abstract: enzymatic bioreduction of nitro groups plays an important role on the activity of biologically active nitroaromatic compounds. electrochemical methods are useful tools to simulate in vivo metabolic processes. this work presents electrochemical studies in aprotic media (n, n-dimethylformamide (dmf) plus tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (tbap) 0.1 mol l-1) using cyclic voltammetry (cv), differential pulse voltammetry (dpv) and square wave voltammetry (swv) of twelve morita-baylis-hillman adducts (mbha) with significant leishmanicidal activity. to facilitate the analysis, the molecules were grouped in four classes according to the side chain. cv studies show three up to four reduction waves, in which the first two waves are related to nitro group reduction. the other waves (presenting more negative potential) refer to the reduction of the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl or to the nitrile activated olefin side-chain. ortho adducts present facilitated reduction in comparison to the other isomers (meta and para) possibly due to hydrogen bond formation between the benzylic-oh and the nitro group, which stabilizes the reduction product (anion radical nitro) more efficiently than the original compound. ortho derivatives also present higher leishmanicidal activity upon comparison to the other derivatives of each class. conformational studies using hf/6-31+g(d)/pcm as a calculation level highlight this effect. molecular hardness (n) and atomic charges (qn) values corroborate the obtained experimental data.

Abstract: human memory research has been revealing dissociations among memory tasks, both in normal and in memory-impaired subjects. this study evaluates the applicability of the dominant theoretical approaches in this domain to normal participants. the memory systems approach predicts dissociations between an implicit memory system and an explicit memory system. alternatively, a processing account predicts dissociations based on the degree of overlap between the cognitive operations at study and test, resulting in dissociations between conceptual and perceptive tasks. results revealed that performance in the explicit memory tasks of free recall and graphemic cued recall was dissociated from performance in the implicit memory tasks of word fragment completion and general knowledge questions. the manipulation of the level of processing at study enhanced performance in the explicit memory tasks, but had no effect on the implicit memory ones, independently of the perceptive or conceptual nature of the tasks. these findings suggest that dissociations among memory measures are better explained in terms of different memory systems that underlie different memory tasks.

Abstract: fall armyworm, spodoptera frugiperda (j. e. smith), is the most important maize insect pest in brazil and its damage can reduce yield up to 34%. the objective of this work was to utilize the pcr technique to identify bacillus thuringiensis (b.t) strains that control s. frugiperda in maize crops. bioassays showed that 16 strains were very effective against s. frugiperda, 15 of them collected from soil samples and one (t09) obtained at the institute pasteur. the dna of these strains were probed with cryi general primers and their proteins were analised by sds-page eletrophoresis. all strains present positive results for cryi genes. to further characterize these strains, specific cryi primers were employed. pcr technique showed that some strains harbour the same cryi genes. the only difference was the amplification of an unexpected fragment of approximately 160bp when a mixture of cryib and cryid specific primers was used. analysis by phase contrast microscope showed that crystal proteins produced by these strains were all bipyramidal crystals. also, eltrophoretic analysis of proteins by sds-page showed the same protein banding pattern for most of the strains.

Abstract: despite the good results generated by studies of uses and needs of musical information published in the last years, there is lack of basic referential to support the organization of concepts and the mapping of variables associated to the phenomena that are object of investigation. this paper presents a behavioral model for the needs and usage of musical information that can facilitate the identification of variables of analysis and production of instruments for data collecting in quantitative and qualitative studies. in order to validate the proposed conceptual model, the results of one application of the model in a quantitative exploratory study with non specialized users of music are presented.

Abstract: Considering the current discussion of environmental issues, the introduction of interdisciplinary topics such as biodiesel in the classroom is an essential strategy for student comprehension of issues related to this energy source (Oliveira et al.,2008). This project aimed at checking teacher knowledge regarding renewable energy in private and state schools in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ). We concluded that most teachers have never approached the issue in their classes. The study demonstrates that teachers need to approach the topic in class.

Abstract: \noindent We study the Zariski tangent cone $T_X\stackrel{\pi}{\lar} X$ to an affine variety $X$ and the closure $\bar{T}_X$ of $\pi^{-1}({\rm Reg}(X))$ in $T_X$. We focus on the comparison between $T_X$ and $\bar{T}_X$, giving sufficient conditions on $X$ in order that $T_X=\bar{T}_X$. One aspect of the results is to understand when this equality takes place in the presence of the reducedness of the Zariski tangent cone. Our other interest is to consider conditions on $X$ in order that $\bar{T}_X$ be normal or/and Cohen--Macaulay, and to prove that they are met by several classes of affine varieties including complete intersection, Cohen--Macaulay codimension two and Gorenstein codimension three singularities. In addition, when $X$ is the affine cone over a smooth arithmetically normal Calabi--Yau projective variety, we establish when $\bar{T}_X$ is also (the affine cone over) an arithmetically normal Calabi--Yau like (projective) variety.
