Abstract: Background: Detection of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) in acute ischemic stroke patients poses diagnostic challenge. The aim of this study was to predict the presence of PAF by means of 12-lead ECG in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Our hypothesis was that P-wave dispersion (Pd) might be a useful marker in predicting PAF in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: 12-lead resting ECGs, 24-hour Holter recordings and echocardiograms of 400 patients were analyzed retrospectively. PAF was detected in 40 patients on 24-hour Holter monitoring. Forty out of 360 age and gender matched patients without PAF were randomly chosen and assigned as the control group. Demographics, P-wave characteristics and echocardiographic findings of the patients with and without PAF were compared. Results: Maximum P-wave duration (p=0.002), Pd (p<0.001) and left atrium diameter (p=0.04) were significantly higher in patients with PAF when compared to patients without PAF. However, in binary logistic regression analysis Pd was the only independent predictor of PAF. The cut-off value of Pd for the detection of PAF was 57.5 milliseconds (msc). Area under the curve was 0.80 (p<0.001). On a single 12-lead ECG, a value higher than 57.5 msc predicted the presence of PAF with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 73%. Conclusion: Pd on a single 12-lead ECG obtained within 24 hours of an acute ischemic stroke might help to predict PAF and reduce the risk of recurrent strokes.

Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2007,
Abstract: Posthypoxic action myoclonus (PAM) can be developed in patients who survived an hypoxic brain injury and is resistant to pharmacological therapy. The patient presented here developed PAM with very serious myoclonic jerks by which he was fully incapacitated. His myocloni did not respond to treatment with most commonly used agents, i.e. valproate, topiramate, clonazepam and baclofen alone or in combination. An important degree of improvement was observed after levetiracetam was started.

Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2010,
Abstract: Background: There are only few studies adressing differences of triggering factors between genders and different types of migraine. This study was conducted to assess the differences between triggering factors and their intergender differences in migraine with aura(MA), migraine without aura(MO) and tension-type headache(TTH)Methods: A total of 221 patients (53 MA, 129 MO and 39 TTH) were given a questionnaire consisting of headache triggers. Results: Logistic regression analysis revealed that female sex, bright light and skipping meals were associated with migraine and milk was associated with TTH. Comparison according to gender showed that in MO the total sum of triggers was higher and bright light, loud noise, strong odors, coffeinated beverages, insufficient sleep, high altitude and having any food trigger were more frequent in females. In MA no gender difference was found. In patients with TTH alcoholic beverages other than red wine were a more common trigger among male patientsConclusion: Our results show that triggers differ among females and males with MO but not MA. This may suggest that the female brain is more vulnerable to triggers in MO. It is possible that the regions of the brain on which triggers act show gender specific differences possibly related to differences in neurotransmitter concentrations, receptors, excitability and hormonal interactions.

Abstract: the coruh valley, located in northeastern turkey, is one of the most important centers of diversity in pomegranate in turkey. in this study, we attempted to characterize 19 promising pomegranate genotypes originating from the coruh valley in using fluorescent dye aflp markers and capillary electrophoresis. four aflp primer combinations were used, generating a total of 297 fragments, 213 of which were polymorphic (73.0%). resolving powers of the aflp primers ranged from 0.700 to 1.018, with a total of 3.440, while polymorphism information contents ranged from 0.707 to 0.837 with an average of 0.764. upgma clustering of the genotypes showed two major groups. most of the fruit characteristics of the genotypes within the same group were variable. therefore, the results showed that molecular characterization is necessary to get reliable relationships among pomegranate genotypes and aflp markers can be used effectively in pomegranate.

Turkish Studies , 2012,
Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the features of image, language and style in the poems of Kemalettin Kamu, a poet of Turkish literature in Armistice era. These features are quite important to reveal the poetic structure in Kamu’s poems. As the poet reflected his inner world to the outer world via literature, images in his poems are classed under certain headings in accordance with the common features. These headings derived from the evaluation of images in his poems are also deemed to have value in reflecting his inner world more concretely. The language and style used by Kemalettin Kamu, a.k.a. the poet of the motherland and faraway places from the motherland, in his poems will be analysed and evaluated in a separate section. Bu al ma, Türk edebiyat n n mütareke d nemi airlerinden Kemalettin Kamu’nun iirlerindeki imaj, dil ve üslup zelliklerini de erlendirmeyi ama lam t r. International Business Research , 2011, DOI: 10.5539/ibr.v4n4p104
Abstract: The role of marketing during the economic recession becomes more significant than usual times. It is necessary to understand how firms should adjust their marketing strategies to handle with recessions. Although recessions have been studied primarily in finance and economics, there is a void in marketing literature about it. Recessions have significant effects on consumer behaviors and substantial impacts on firms, and these affect particular socio-demographic strata and business segments in different ways. The effects of recessions need to be examined both to cope with the ensuing problems and to get ready for prospective recessions. This exploratory research paper examines the changing marketing practices, marketing opportunities, and strategies of Turkish firms that were employed to respond to 2008 global economic crises, which caused recession in many economies. It was observed that adjustments are needed in marketing strategies and activities during economic recessions to benefit from arising opportunities and keep away from arising threats.

Asian Social Science , 2011, DOI: 10.5539/ass.v7n10p267
Abstract: Prefabricated house industry might be considered as being at the stage of birth in Turkey and the consumer demand for this product category seems sluggish owing to some reasons. This empirical study explores some possible reasons of the low demand rates for prefabricated houses and data was gathered via an online survey in Turkey and some statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS statistical program. This paper also provides a cognitive framework to understand the consumer buying dimensions of prefabricated houses. The results reveal that marketing communication tools are not being used sufficiently, and thus marketing communications are not being held effectively by prefabricated houses manufacturers. As a result, consumers lack some significant information related with the attributes of the product, in this case prefabricated houses, they held misinformation about the product, and so they do not develop desired buying intentions about this product category.

Asian Social Science , 2011, DOI: 10.5539/ass.v7n9p194
Abstract: Most literature focuses on the branding in the profit sector, while few efforts have been spent on studies in the nonprofit sector which has been in the rise in the last decades and constitutes a remarkable percentage of the economy in many developed countries. Nonprofit organizations are in essence a kind of an indicator of how developed a country is, so it might be accepted that in underdeveloped countries and developing countries they are not well established yet, so analyzing the well established nonprofit organizations will also usher the ones which are at still birth age. An issue which should be analyzed about nonprofit organizations is the application of a significant marketing concept brand orientation. The proposed research aims to highlight the importance of branding and brand orientation for nonprofit organizations and to bring to surface the antecedents and the outcomes of being brand oriented in nonprofit sector. A comprehensive literature review was done and a conceptual model is proposed in this literature review.

Abstract: Purpose: The evaluation of the patients with clefts; the number, type, distribution by gender, etiological factors in Aegean region in Turkey between the years 2000 to 2011. Material and Method: The patients with clefts who referred to Ege University from different cities were evaluated. The number of the clefts, the type of the clefts, and the causative etiological factors which were known, were recorded for each year separately, from 2000 to 2011. At the same time, the distribution of the gender was made for each year. Chi-square test is used for the statistical evaluation. Results: According to the results of the study, the numbers of the patients with clefts were increased day by day. Totally 741 (49.6% female, 50.4% male) patients with clefts were identified. Unilateral complete cleft lip and palate appeared in the left side was seen more in males (23.8%), while seconder palate cleft was seen more in females (16.7%). Drugs, which were used in the first trimester of the pregnancy, were the most seen etiological factors for the clefts (42.5%), while genetic was 23.3% only. Conclusion: The prevention for one of the mostly seen congenital anomaly; cleft lip and palate is still unknown. For this reason, the determination of the newborn babies with cleft lip and palate has an important role in order to give these patients more effective treatment.
