Boron supplementation in broiler diets
Fassani, EJ;Bertechini, AG;Brito, JAG;Kato, RK;Fialho, ET;Geraldo, A;
Revista Brasileira de Ciência Avícola , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-635X2004000400004
Abstract: boron supplementation in broiler feed is not a routine practice. however, some reports suggest a positive effect of boron on performance. this study assessed the effects of boron supplementation on broiler performance. diets were based on maize and soybean meal, using boric acid p.a. as boron source. six supplementation levels (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 ppm) were evaluated using 1,440 one-day old males housed at a density of 30 chickens in each of 48 experimental plots of 3m2. a completely randomized block design was used with 8 replicates. feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion were assessed in the periods from 1 to 7 days, 1 to 21 days and 1 to 42 days of age, and viability was evaluated for the total 42-day rearing period. no performance variable was affected by boron supplementation (p>0.05) in the period from 1 to 7 days. the regression analysis indicated an ideal level of 37.4 ppm of boron for weight gain from 1 to 21 days (p<0.05) without affecting feed conversion (p>0.05), although feed intake was reduced linearly with increased boron levels (p<0.05). in the total rearing period (1 to 42 days), the level of 57 ppm boron was adequate for weight gain (p<0.01) without affecting feed conversion (p>0.05). ash and calcium percentages in the tibias of broilers and viability in the total rearing period were not affected by boron supplementation (p>0.05).
Mortality of varroa destructor in broodless africanized and carnica honey bee (apis mellifera l.) colonies
Interciencia , 2002,
Abstract: summary varroa destructor infestation varies with climate conditions and race of apis mellifera bees. africanized bees show greater tolerance to varroa compared to bees of european races. reproductive ability of female mites, hygienic behavior and grooming behavior are important factors in population dynamics of this parasite. the present study shows the mortality rate of the v. destructor mite in africanized and carnica bee colonies in southern brazil. the daily proportion of dead and live mite fallen on the bottom of the hive was determined when the total mite population was of adult bees. in africanized bee colonies the daily proportion of dead mite was 6.30%, while in carnica bee colonies was 2.11%. the daily proportion of live mite on the bottom of the hive was 2.45% and 0.82% in africanized and carnica bee colonies, respectively.

Miniuci, Geraldo;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002005000300006
Abstract: this article discusses the ideas of the german political scientist harald müller concerning the use of habermas? theory of communicative action to analyze international political relations. it raises the main problems of this proposal and discusses the possibilities of examining these relations against the framework of the communicative process without borrowing concepts from the habermasian theory.

Caliman, Geraldo;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362006000300007
Abstract: elementary education, in brazil and in other countries, is continually being reformed. the historic passage from a school for the elite to a school for the masses coincides with a period in which the child comes to be seen as a citizen endowed with rights. the article shows how the student body in our time consists of children and adolescents of different social origins. each has a life history which, for some, is "normal," but for others is characterized by a great variety of situations of social risk, marked by failure, disadvantages, malaise and suffering. at it is impossible to keep the social context from invading the classroom, there is a need to ponder the requirements and rights of a range of students in situations of disadvantage and social risk, difficulties in school achievement, difficulties related to expressions of hostility, difficulties in adaptation to the role of student and difficulties relative to social interaction. the article also shows how, in recent history, interpretation of the relationship between conditions of social disadvantage and instruction has been based on different hypotheses. each of these hypotheses (socio-cultural disadvantage as diversity of talents, as a natural handicap or as a disadvantage of the structural type; disadvantages due to qualitative-organizational characteristics of the school, the school's incapacity to provide adequate teaching or a damaged teacher-student relationship) has, in the post-war period, adopted different models for facing the situation.
O tra?o francês na arquitetura do Recife: o Hospital Pedro II
Pereira, Geraldo;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702011000500017
Abstract: pedro ii hospital was inaugurated in recife in 1861 and for several decades was the leading center of its kind in the state of pernambuco and in northeast brazil. its construction followed french design, as developed by physician jacques-rené tenon, that is, the so-called pavilion style that was the norm in pernambuco and in brazil for many years. after being nearly abandoned in 1982, the hospital was reformed shortly thereafter and reopened its doors to offer a variety of services, thanks to negotiations between the instituto de medicina integral professor fernando figueira and the archdiocese of olinda and recife.
Surgical treatment of premature sagittal synostosis
Pianetti, Geraldo;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1997000300008
Abstract: a series of 50 consecutive children with premature sagittal synostosis is reported. all were treated surgically; 43 were male, 47 were leukodermic and two are siblings. in the pre-operative examination, the head shape, skull measurements and radiologic findings were evaluated; 38 children were operated on before six months of age and 12 of them, between six and 12 months of age. the surgical technique used was a wide biparietal craniectomy. blood transfusions were occasional, being necessary for only six (12%) children. the children were admitted at the day of surgery and discharged between the second and the third post-operative day. no local or general complications were observed and no one died. the aesthetic result was considered good. the altered skull measurements before surgery reached normalization as far as the end of the first year after the treatment. it may be concluded that wide biparietal craniectomy is a procedure of great effectiveness in the treatment of the premature fusion of the sagittal suture.
Lucro inflacionário e fluxo de caixa
Barbieri, Geraldo;
Abstract: this article discusses the health-related agreements that are part of the general agreement on tariffs and trade, marrakech, 1994, as well as other international processes in the harmonization of technical regulations. it is based on a literature review aimed at a theorical basis for identifying principles and arguments, in the wording of the agreements and regulations. a special focus is placed on the impacts for brazilian institutions in terms of internal democracy and national sovereignty. the article concludes that despite the "globalist" arguments according to which these agreements and processes define certain procedures and rules for all states and thus mean a step forward in relation to the previous situation, the international system is still essentially anarchic, with national states motivated exclusively according to their own interests. the super-powers enjoy the prerogative of interpreting their duties and obligations with no fear of contradiction or retaliation, despite institutionalization at the international level.

Cintra, Geraldo;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502004000300008
Abstract: we analyze joaquim mattoso camara's description of noun inflection in portuguese, initially pointing out the aspects in which differs from the traditional view. we them consider other approaches to the concepts involved in the view of renowned linguists both in brazil and abroad. finally, accepting alternative analyses, we demonstrate the possibility of reducing what is usually treated as noun inflection to only two derivational morphemes.
O relacionamento entre pais e filhos em famílias de camadas médias
Romanelli, Geraldo;
Paidéia (Ribeir?o Preto) , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-863X1998000100010
Abstract: in the present study, the relationship between middle class parents and children were analyzed during the transition phase towards maturity, when children look for autonomy and freedom to for fulfillment as separate individuals. the study was conducted on 10 families - 20 parents and 18 children - and the data were collected during taped interviews held according to a semistructured outline. data analysis indicated some changes that mainly manifest as closer proximity of the parents to their children and availability for dialogue and negotiation with them. however, this rapprochement does not eliminate the impasses on either side, which are rooted in the contradiction between the fulfillment of collective family interests, expressed as a family project, and the individual aspirations of the children.
