Electrochemical etching processes for the detection of neutrons and radon-decay products
Tommasino Luigi
Nuclear Technology and Radiation Protection , 2004, DOI: 10.2298/ntrp0401012t
Abstract: The electrochemical etching, because of its complexity, is of interest when it makes it possible to achieve detection characteristics which are not encountered with the chemical etching. These unique characteristics can be found for example for the personal dosimetry of low-energy neutrons around nuclear reactors and for the detection of both low- and high-energy cosmic-ray neutrons at civil aviation altitudes. In particular sufficiently large signal-to-noise ratios for cosmic ray neutron measurements can be achieved by using stack of polycarbonate- and/or CR-39-detectors, since the electrochemical etching processes make it possible: (a) the rapid scanning of large detector areas, and (b) the counting of coincidence events in paired detectors induced by a-few-microns long tracks. The detection of the radon decay products is hindered by the fact that their concentrations are altered in the vicinity of detector surface during the measurement. Polycarbonate detectors may be useful in solving these problems both because they register radon-decay products far away from the plated-out surface and they can be manufactured with any possible geometry and/or shape. However, it is possible to use several combinations of chemical and electrochemical etching steps which implies the possibility of new applications of track detectors for the registration of neutrons, cosmic rays and radon decay products.
Relationship between seed yield and its component characters in Cenchrus spp.

Electronic Journal of Plant Breeding , 2012,
Abstract: Cenchrus setigerus, C. sp., eleven obligate apomictic cultivars and a sexual line of Cenchrus ciliaris L. were studied to determinethe relationship between seed production and its component characters, through principal component analysis, path correlationanalysis and analysis of variance. A completely randomized field design was used. Ten vegetative and reproductivemorphological characters were measured. Seed production was influenced directly by panicle weight and indirectly by paniclelength, 1000 seed weight, length and width of flag leaf lamina and length of flag leaf sheath. Panicle weight showed highheritability and variability among genotypes. Hence, panicle weight can be considered a selection criterion to obtain increasedseed production in Cenchrus. The cultivar Lucero INTA PEMAN exhibited the highest panicle weight and, therefore, greatestseed production, which makes it suitable for selection as parental cultivar to obtain new germplasm in Cenchrus with high seedyield.

Abstract: the majority of articles and books on the environmental question consider the main environmental problems as a fact, without discussing its uncertainties. in this article we consider the two main environmental problems: the climate change and lost of biodiversity. we characterize the problems and show the international discussion about it, as well as the scientific uncertainties.
La solución técnica a los problemas ambientales

Revista Katálysis , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-49802012000100008
Abstract: this essay argues that the environmental discussion has been reduced to a technical question. this implies envisioning technology as neutral and does not consider social relations. it concludes by indicating limits to resolving the great environmental problems implied by capitalist relations.

Abstract: This article focuses on L’Alcorano di Macometto, written by Giovanni Battista Castrodardo from Belluno (1588 ca.-1517 ca.), and published by Andrea Arrivabene at Venice in 1547. Although this text is considered to be a paraphrase of the Latin translation of the Qur’ān made by Robert of Ketton (1143 AD), a closer look shows that it was a handy pocket encyclopedia of the history of Islam and the Ottoman empire. Following a suggestion of Alessandro D’Ancona (1889), I analyze the historical texts published in the introduction to the Alcorano and especially Castrodardo’s biography of the prophet Mu ammad. This biography includes a prayer addressed to Mu ammad through the character of the monk Sergio-Bahīrā in order to persuade him to dethrone Emperor Heraclius. A deep linguistic analysis of this speech sheds light on Castrodardo’s reading of Machiavelli. While this new portrayal of Muhammad is based on medieval sources, it presents the Prophet of Islam as a distinctly Renaissance Prince, a lawgiver and a “Prophet Armed”. It also reflects the pro-Ottoman and anti-Imperial hopes of Italian circles linked to the French embassy in Venice.

English In this article we describe the main positions that different authorshave concerning sutainable development concept. Usually, the maindistinction is drawn between social and physical (or ecological)sustainability. Our main conclusion is twofold. First, both social andecological (or physical) sustainability are considered only from atechnical relations’ approach. Second, a social relations’ approachleads to a broader sense of social sustainability.
(In) certezas sobre la crisis ambiental

Revista Theomai , 2001,
