Conocimiento indígena vs científico: el conflicto por el uso del fuego en el parque nacional canaima, Venezuela
Interciencia , 2004,
Abstract: in order to understand the causes of a long term conflict over the use of fire in canaima national park, venezuela, it is important to analyze the pemon indigenous people?s knowledge of fire ecology in comparison with that of opposing scientists and technicians. for decades managers have tried to eliminate savannah burning in the national park by the pemon in the belief that fire directly causes forest loss. cultural and environmental information upon which the pemon use of fire is based and which has hitherto been ignored by managers and technicians is presented herein. as in recently documented cases in australia and west africa, it is shown that the pemon use fire as a land management tool in the prevention of large forest wildfires. this information is of importance for modifying the government fire control program which has been carried out since 1981. the perceptions of local environmental change held by technicians and scientists on one hand and the pemon on the other are also analyzed and contrasted, with special emphasis on the role of fire. there are important points of concurrence as well as notable areas of disagreement which should be considered in the design of a fire management system based upon both knowledge systems.
Dolores del Río and Lupe Vélez: Working in Hollywood, 1924-1944
Rodríguez, Clara E.;
Norteamérica , 2011,
Abstract: this article focuses on dolores del río and lupe vélez, contextualing their film careers in relation to their reception by their audiences. it focuses on how, despite their generally opposite media representations and personas, they had much in common because they functioned within very similar political-economic contexts. contributing to their commonalities was the film industry's role in casting and representing them in a manner that reflected the hyper-sexuality attributed to latinas, but in a "palatable" -for the times- way. despite different career paths, both were personally involved in transnational circuits, confronted issues of work autonomy, accommodation, resistance and control, and were pressured to play to hollywood stereotypes and to "represent" their communities. the author 's analysis is based on an examination of primary materials dating from 1924 to 1934, and relevant period and contemporary readings and web sources. the article underlines the relevance of their lives to contemporary latina/o actors.
Productividad científica de la Cardiología y de las Sociedades de Cardiología: diferencias y similitudes de la Argentina con la región y los países centrales
Rodríguez,Alfredo E;
Revista argentina de cardiolog?-a , 2012,
Abstract: scientific production by cardiologists and scientific societies of cardiology: differences and similarities between argentina and regional and central countries the present study analyzes the scientific production by cardiologists in general and by societies of cardiology in particular in argentina and other regions of the world, including latin america, usa, europe, asia, oceania and south africa. we used the h-index created by professor jorge e. hirsch, an argentinean physicist who is currently working in the university of california, usa. despite its limitations, the h-index is nowadays used in most of the universities of the developed countries to measure the scientific quality of an investigator, a group of investigators or a scientific society. this index considers all the publications performed by the author and the amount of citation the work has received. the limitations of this index are discussed in this paper. we have tried to quantify the scientific production in cardiology measured by the h-index in different countries. the h-index of the presidents of the scientific societies of cardiology in the last 20 years is also analyzed. the possible explanations for these findings are discussed. despite its shortcomings, the h-index is used in most of the universities in the usa and europe for the award of tenure, promotion and advancement in the career of an investigator, which i consider of undoubted value at the moment of measuring scientific and academic production.

Sugars, Organic Acids and Total Phenols in Varieties of Chestnut Fruits from Tenerife (Spain)  [PDF]
M. Hernández Suárez, B. Rodríguez Galdón, D. Ríos Mesa, C. Díaz Romero, E. Rodríguez Rodríguez
Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2012.36096
Abstract: The sugar, organic and total phenol contents were determined in 21 varieties of chestnut from Tenerife (Spain). Sucrose, fructose and glucose were determined by HPLC/refraction index being the sucrose the sugar with the highest content. The organic acids were determined by HPLC/diode array, and the chestnuts had an organic acids profile characterized by the following compounds: oxalic, glutamic, tartaric, pyruvic, malic, ascorbic, citric, fumaric and cis-aconitic acids. Ascorbic, citric and malic acids were the major organic acids. There were differences in the composition of sugars, total phenols and organic acids between the chestnut varieties. The production zone only significantly affected the contents of moisture, sucrose, total phenols and fructose. The correlations between glucose-fructose, malic acid-fumaric acid, tartaric acid-oxalic acid could be emphasized. An important contribution to the intake of antioxidants is observed for the consumption of chestnuts.
Molecular characterization of Cuban endemism Carica cubensis Solms using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers  [PDF]
Jesús Rodríguez, Pedro Rodríguez, María E. González, Pedro Martínez-Gómez
Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/as.2010.13012
Abstract: The objective of this work is to present an appropriate set of RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) markers using single and multiplex PCR analysis suitable for the characterization of the endemic Cuban species Carica cubensis and the establishment of genetic relationships with the cultivated species Carica papaya. RAPD markers presented a high level of polymorphism. In addition, the incorporation of more than one RAPD primer in the PCR analysis increased the number of obtained bands and the polymorphism of these bands. A total of 73 RAPD bands were detected (45 of them polymorphic) with the nine RAPD markers assayed using single and multiplex PCR analysis. Results demonstrated a reduced genetic variability within the tested Carica cubensis accessions. The observed clustering in this species could be better explained according to geographic proximity and can indicate the similar precedence of the isolated studied populations. C. cubensis seem to be subspecies of C. papaya adapted to the environmental conditions of the mountains of Cuba or a endemic species close to C. papaya. The implications of these results in the creation of effective germplasm core collection in Carica species have been also discussed.
Investigación y Desarrollo , 2008,
Abstract: the present paper is part of the dissertation "mexican immigrants in meatpacking areas of kansas: transition and acquisition of cultural capital", that applies the theoretical framework of pierre bour-dieu(igjj;ig86) to observe the process of adaptation of mexican immigrants, as a process of acquisition of cultural capital, in which they have to modify or get rid of certain cultural practices from their original cultural background (habitus), and adopt and adapt elements from the receiving anglo culture, thus defining their position within the new social space. the application of such a theoretical framework represented a challenge, since there were no previous applications of the bourdiean model in the study of migrant communities.
Usos educativos de las TIC: competencias tecnológicas y rendimiento académico de los estudiantes universitarios barineses, una perspectiva causal
Godoy Rodríguez,Carlos E;
Educere , 2006,
Abstract: the main objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between the educational uses of ict, skill levels in handling technology (ict skills index) and academic performance of university students from barinas, so as to propose a model of causal relations that adequately represent the efects of the use of technology with academic purposes on the results of the studies. this was a random, transversal and anonymous study that follows the usual evolution of the research process: it begins as a descriptive research and ends as an explicative study. the sampling was done in conglomerates and stratified in three stages. the sampling for the study was made up of 410 university students from barinas. a self-applied questionnaire was used. the causal model proposed during the development of this research, revealed significant influences of several markers on the grades obtained in the ict skills index; which did not happen with the relation between the latter index and the academic performance of the students from barinas. this result seems to support what is often brought up in literature on this subject, related to the obstacles found up until now by researchers, to prove the efectiveness of ict upon the results in these studies; and places, once again, the known paradox of non-significance (see russel, 1999, for a more detailed analysis of this phenomenon.) in the limelight of this debate.
Tipo De Cambio Real, Precios Relativos Y Autonomía Del Sistema Agroalimentario Venezolano 1973-2000
Rodríguez Rojas,José E;
Agroalimentaria , 2005,
Abstract: the objective of this paper is to characterize the real exchange rate behavior and its effect on the venezuelan agri-food system (sav) during the 1973-2000 period. the author analyzes the sav at the aggregate level as well as for the meat and the cereals chains cases. he also presented time series data to compare real exchange rate, sav autonomy and relative prices relationships. the author concludes that the strong increase in the venezuelan oil revenues caused a severe appreciation in the real exchange rate, modifying the relative prices structure of the sav. this stimulated food imports, deteriorating sav autonomy until critical levels.
